As the only health insurer to serve all 87 Minnesota counties, Blue Cross is committed to addressing care needs at the local level. That’s why we are excited to announce our support to help Minnesota State University, Mankato bring additional mental health resources to the state’s southern central region. Slated to open later this year, the Rural Behavioral Health Clinic will provide in-person mental health counseling, case management and medication management to Minnesotans throughout the area. The clinic will also address workforce development needs by having MSU students train side-by-side with experienced faculty and clinicians in preparation for careers as mental health professionals. Our senior leadership team and Board of Directors just returned from a two-day “road trip” to west central Minnesota for a series of discussions on the state of rural healthcare. Thanks to Lake Region Healthcare in in Fergus Falls and Alomere Health in Alexandria for serving as hosts and facilitating insightful discussions on how they serve their communities. Blue Cross also met with additional community leaders at a health-focused roundtable event held at Fergus Brewing Company. Attendees included representatives from Apple Tree Dental, West Central Initiative, Lakeland Mental Health Center, MAHUBE-OTWA COMMUNITY ACTION PARTNERSHIP INC, and Otter Tail County. “This trip was a great opportunity to listen, learn and collaborate on ways that all of us can work to make the region even healthier,” said Dana Erickson, president and CEO of Blue Cross. “These conversations can serve as a model for similar face-to-face conversations in other parts of the state."

This summer marks the seventh year that Blue Cross has partnered with ThreeSixty Journalism to support their Multimedia Storytelling Institute. The partnership helps to empower the next generation of storytellers and change the dominant narrative on health. This year, students reported on the ongoing legacy of racism in healthcare and how Minnesota communities are working to heal, reclaim community wellbeing, and center cultural wisdom to create a healthier future. Featured stories include the African American Babies Coalition, the Birth Justice Collaborative, Indigenous People’s Taskforce, Kente Circle, Native American Community Clinic, and Urban Roots MN. “At Blue Cross, we want to not only address how racism and oppression have a negative impact on health, but also help to uplift the work being done to heal and create healthy futures,” says Blue Cross chief equity officer Bukata Hayes.
