When a student struggles with personal issues, I first make time to listen actively, without judgment, to help them feel understood. I’ve had students overwhelmed by personal pressures, and simply allowing them to share their burden without interruption made a difference.
Flexibility is key, so when a student was dealing with a family emergency, I offered extended deadlines and alternative assignments to help them keep up.
I also create a supportive environment, offering discreet encouragement. Referring students to counseling services while staying engaged with their progress shows care without overstepping professional boundaries.

None of us are ‘fully on’ all the time; our readiness to engage and contribute fluctuates. When the going gets particularly tough for whatever reason, I would venture a guess that every learner will appreciate our noticing the change in their energy or mood, and being responsive to it. Offering a learner some space to be with their thoughts, or having a bit more choice in whether, when, and how they participate in learning may be all that is needed. Or a gentle check-in during a break so they know they are ‘seen’. Perhaps you are the only one who offers them that at a particularly difficult time.

In my over ten years of experience in higher education, I have found that 'personal issues' can significantly impact a student's academic performance. These issues may be related to family or relationships. Some students struggle due to problems in their love life, and to support these students, one has to show empathy. However, this can be challenging unless you understand what the student is going through. They are more likely to open up if they see you as more than just a teacher – as a mentor and a friend, one who cares and whom they can trust. Once these are established, they will feel more comfortable expressing their thoughts. It's also important to create a safe and comfortable space where students can share their feelings.

When a mentee or student is struggling with personal issues, it's crucial to create a space where they feel seen and supported, even by their mentor. Here's how I usually do it in my sessions:
1. Check in privately, offering to listen without pressure.
2. Offer flexible deadlines or alternative assignments when necessary.
3. Foster an inclusive session environment where everyone feels valued.
4. Incorporate mindfulness exercises or journaling to help students process emotions.
Supporting them as whole individuals, as I've noticed in my experience, often boosts their academic confidence too!
