King has often gotten into controversies for his critique of other literary figures. However, he correctly predicted a trend that would go on to shape the future of two fantasy shows – Game of Thrones and The Wheel of Time.
Stephen King didn’t like The Wheel of Time
Robert Jordan’s novel series, The Wheel of Time, a 14-volume read, is quite popular among young adults and admirers of fantasy. Back in 2016, at The Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque, King had a chat with George R.R. Martin, where he admitted his dislike for Jordan’s work.

The second season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon wrapped up last month, ending on a series of cliffhangers. Is Rhaenyra going to invade King's Landing? When will the Triarchy fleet reach Westeros? What will become of King Aegon Targaryen, who fled King's Landing rather than wait to get killed by his ambitious brother Aemond? Unfortunately, we won't know the answers to those questions for quite a while.
How long, exactly? Things are starting to come into focus. Over this past weekend, Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays King Aegon, appeared on a panel at Rose City Comic Con in Portland, Oregon. The proprietor of the Tumblr blog @hotdaemondtargaryen posted some of his responses. And I know a Tumblr blog isn't an ironclad source, but @hotdaemondtargaryen posted photos of Glynn-Carney on the panel on the blog, so I think it's at least worth exploring.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 has finally arrived, and we couldn't be more excited! The intricate fantasy series and franchise overall have built such an expansive world, and it's fun to see it all come to life in a new way with this prequel series.
The first three episodes are now streaming, and going forward one new installment will be released weekly. I'm sure we're in for a wild ride! I mean, this trio definitely got things moving right away. There's no argument that Rings of Power is one of the best shows streaming on Prime Video right now. And there's a bunch of others that join it. And, well, some that aren't worth your time.
There's the obvious shows that really are good, but you'll find on every list like this. Those include The Boys, Fallout, The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Wheel of Time,...

Basing a show’s success on viewer satisfaction is a tricky proposition.
TV history is rife with bizarre and nonsensical occasions that make sense only within the numbers — sometimes, not even then.
Firefly is a legendary example of this. It had a loyal fanbase and critical acclaim, but Fox nonetheless cut its legs out from under it.
(Helen Sloan/HBO)
There are countless instances of relatively popular programs ending on massive cliffhangers, never to return.
Then there are the shows that audiences hate, yet a new season is in the works each and every year.
There’s a great deal of head-scratching here, so the ultimate answer is yes.
A show can succeed if viewers aren’t satisfied, and for several reasons that make more sense in context. The virulent nature of news, audience vs critical reactions, and, of course, money play their roles.

Artur Hawkwing is a legendary figure within The Wheel of Time series, written by Robert Jordan and finished by Brandon Sanderson. Born Artur Paendrag Tanreall, he was a very powerful Ta'veren — basically someone who's so important to the fabric of reality that events bend around them — and eventually ruled over a vast empire. He was a well-loved king whose reign was marked by peace, although his death did set off a brutal period of warfare as people fought to take his place, or else carve off pieces of his former empire for themselves.
Artur Hawkwing gets talked about a lot in The Wheel of Time books, but is rarely seen. That makes sense, considering he died long before the events of the story. But he does return briefly when Mat Cauthon sounds the Horn of Valere in The Great Hunt, coming to Mat's aid alongside other heroes of legend.

House of the Dragon is one of the biggest and best shows on TV right now! The second season of the Game of Thrones spinoff just came to an end in August 2024. Now, we have a long wait for House of the Dragon season 3.
Thanks to the success of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, there’s been an incredible investment of resources into the fantasy genre!
Unfortunately, there aren’t that many good fantasy shows on TV right now, but there are a few. Throw in a few historical dramas and some outside-the-box picks, and you’ll have quite the list of shows to watch while waiting for House of the Dragon season 3!
For obvious reasons, we did not include Game of Thrones on this list. You should definitely watch Game of Thrones if you haven’t already, especially if you’re watching House of the Dragon.

The second season of House of the Dragon is over. We know a third season is on the way, followed by a fourth and final sometime after that. We've don't have any firm timeline, though. Writing is already happening, with filming hopefully set to begin in early 2025. That means we probably won't be watching new episodes until 2026.
That's not for sure, but that's our best guess. Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower, seems to agree with us. She took to her Instagram and posted some fun behind-the-scenes pics, including this one which she captioned with, "ta, see you in 2 years."

Two years has pretty much become the standard waiting period between new episodes of big, special effects-heavy genre dramas like House of the Dragon. The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time...they all take a year off between seasons. Some shows like Stranger Things take longer.

The plot begins after “The Black Death strikes hard in the Italian countryside in 1348, and a handful of nobles retreat to a grand villa with their servants. Last year, the industry had to skip many usual promotional events since the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers’ Guild were on strike. Press for films being showcased at film festivals would not feature any actors, and for an event such as San Diego’s Comic-Con International, the panels normally reserved for big movie reveals would become an unforeseen barren wasteland with many canceled appearances. This included panels for Dune: Part Two, The Boys spin-off series Gen V, Amazon’s The Wheel of Time, Lionsgate’s upcoming The Strangers trilogy, and more.
This year, things are getting back in full swing as Deadline now reports that Marvel Studios will be making their way back to the illustrious Hall H at Comic-Con, where the studio has reigned for so long during the Infinity Saga. San Diego Comic-Con runs from July 25-28, and Marvel usually comes in at the tail end on the second to last day.

Sanaa Hamri, executive producer and director of the Prime Video fantasy series “The Wheel of Time,” feels like she’s just getting started.
The Moroccan-born filmmaker began her career in the late 1990s directing music videos for artists such as Prince, Mariah Carey, Sting and Nicki Minaj. She transitioned to television in the mid-2000s, directing episodes of “Desperate Housewives,” “Glee,” and “Nashville.” Hamri made her feature directorial debut in 2006 with the romantic comedy “Something New” for Focus Features. She has since directed the hit 2008 sequel “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” for Warner Bros. and the romantic comedy “Just Wright” for Searchlight in 2010.
With an overall deal with Amazon Prime Video, she’s on the Primetime Emmy Awards ballot for directing “The Wheel of Time” episode “What Was Meant to Be.” The second season finale follows Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) and others to an inevitable showdown with their most formidable enemies yet.

As TV academy voters fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they will have to consider 107 shows for Best Drama Series. This is down by 56 contenders compared to last year. As was the case in 2023, members may not allow their selections to exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be eight.
2023 Best Drama Series winner “Succession” and six of the seven also-rans are out of the current race because they did not air new episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 qualifying period. This leaves “The Crown” as the only 2023 nominee eligible for an immediate return, which could lead to its second victory here following its first in 2021.
Remember, only eight of the shows below will earn bids for Best Drama Series when the Emmy nominations are announced on July 17. Which do you think will make the cut?

When adapting “The Wheel of Time” for Amazon Prime Video, “everything begins and ends with character” for Sony’s head of creative Lauren Stein. “I think with any of these adaptations, whether it’s a game, whether it’s from a series of books, people come to these worlds for character, not for spectacle,” she added. “And the spectacle is really nice to have, but if you’re not connected to someone in the show, you’re not going to stay with it.”
As part of Variety‘s Sony FYC Showcase, Stein was joined by “Outlander” executive producer Maril Davis, “Twisted Metal” showrunner and executive producer Michael Jonathan Smith, “Twisted Metal” production designer Vicotria Paul, “The Wheel of Time” executive producer Justine Gillmer and “The Wheel of Time” actor Daniel Henney to discuss adapting existing IP into a successful television series. Variety senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay served as moderator for the conversation.

Now that FX has decided to make more episodes of its breakout hit Shōgun, it is changing its Emmy strategy for the James Clavell adaptation.
Deadline has learned that FX will submit the saga — which originally premiered as a limited series — in the drama category. Before, Shōgun would have competed against the likes of Under the Bridge or Apples Never Fall. Now that it’s coming back for subsequent seasons, Shōgun will face off against series like Silo, The Wheel of Time, Fallout and The Morning Show.
Today, FX announced it was renewing the Hiroyuki Sanada saga with a possible intent to squeeze two more seasons out of the global hit. A start date for production has not been set, but a writers’ room is being assembled and will begin this summer.

How do the makers of Bridgerton keep a fandom as dedicated as theirs guessing? How does the Netflix show surprise a core of fans who are so intimately familiar with Julia Quinn’s source books that they’re anticipating every blush and ball before it even gets to the screen?
One solution, as has happened in season three, is to play with the established order of things. Though Benedict Bridgerton’s romance follows on from that of his brother Anthony’s in Quinn’s book series, the TV show has (rightly!) vaulted over that to first show the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.
Their other answer? Invention. In addition to TV-only characters Madame Delacroix, Will and Alice Mondrich and Queen Charlotte herself, a new raft of invented-for-the-show characters appear in season three. Here they all are, along with info on the actors playing them, plus a couple...

Sony Pictures Entertainment has seen operating income fall nearly 10% for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024.
The company’s operating income was $808M in dollar terms compared with $894M for the comparable period a year before, which was down 9.6%. Revenues crept up to $10.31B from $10.14B for Fy.
Sony, which is headquartered in Japan, said the Hollywood strikes had impacted its Pictures segment, which comprises TV production, motion pictures and media networks (including streaming).
Whereas in 2023 Sony had suffered from a lack of new theatrical product, this year the increased number and growth at streamer Crunchyroll helped to offset a decrease in series delivered due to the labor action and lower catalog licensing of motion pictures.
On the motion pictures side, full-year revenues were $3.74B, up slightly on the previous year, but TV fell from nearly $4B to just over $3.8B. However, media networks grew from $2.69B to $2.72B.
