Some of the most illustrious names in rock — and other genres — will pay tribute to Robbie Robertson in a celebratory concert at the L.A.-area Kia Forum on Oct. 17, with the musician’s longtime friend and collaborator Martin Scorsese among the executive producers.
The lineup for “Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson” includes some contemporaries who came up with the Band’s late songwriter-guitarist in the ’60s. These include Bobby Weir, Taj Mahal and three artists who appeared with Robertson in the Scorsese-directed 1986 concert documentary “The Last Waltz”: Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and Mavis Staples.
It also includes some musical figures whose stars have risen in the last 15 years or so, like Eric Church, Allison Russell, Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price and — a current mainstay of the Billboard album chart’s top 10 — Noah Kahan.
Mostly, though, the roster is full of veteran stars who...

Daisy Ridley, who made her Star Wars debut in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, also her breakout movie playing Rey in the 2015 movie, made a shocking revelation about her role. The actor candidly revealed that her role in the franchise was physically demanding and took a toll on her.

Even though we saw the last Harry Potter movie 13 years ago, the discussions regarding the franchise’s characters and the actors who portrayed them aren’t going to subside in a while. The same is with the first movies’ antagonist, fierce and arrogant Draco Malfoy, who was convincingly played by Tom Felton, the fandom’s favorite blondie.
It can seem that the actor now stays out of the spotlight or is out of acting at all, however, he isn’t. Indeed, after his Hp success Felton took smaller roles in a number of lesser-known projects, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth a try.
The same year when The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 was released, the Draco actor appeared in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), which gained a lot of hype at the time. The role of Dodge Landon marked a far cry from the role of Harry Potter’s rival.

Daisy Ridley gets "emotional" when she thinks about what 'Star Wars' means to fans. The 31-year-old actress starred as Jakku scavenger Rey in 'The Force Awakens', 'The Last Jedi', and 'The Rise of Skywalker' and after signing up to appear in the next film in the sci-fi franchise - which will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and is slated for release in 2026 - admitted that it has been "wonderful" to be part of such a cult fandom. She told Collider: "When we did the announcement last year, it was really, my agent flew over and honestly, I came off and we were all really emotional. Of course, I always feel lucky to be part of it, but it was like a reminder I suppose of, sorry I'm just gabbling, but I suppose a reminder of how people do feel about Rey. I was like, 'It's wonderful.'...

Though PinkPantheress’s Heaven Knows is dotted with samples across its runtime, the British singer’s debut album nonetheless presents an original, unique vision. A departure from her 2021 mixtape To Hell with It, which is built around succinct, TikTok-ready songs and easily recognizable sonic quotations from various U.K. dance cuts, Heaven Knows is a full-throated pop album with an eye on contemporary trends.
“The Aisle” is as good a bellwether as any to determine if fans will take the leaps that PinkPantheress is asking of them. It’s more robust than anything we’ve heard from her before, with glossy disco inflections and drum work, and layer upon layer of jittering synths. The track’s invocation of disco and nod to 2Pac’s “California Love” are in service of mainstream pop consumption rather than a revivalist genre experiment. Its pastiche is certainly less “cool,” but PinkPantheress delivers it with a surprising ease.

By the time Martin Scorsese’s music documentary “The Last Waltz” premiered in 1978, the legendary Americana music progenitors the Band, whom the film explores, had gone from “Cahoots” to kaput for two years.
The 1976 farewell concert at the center of the film was already a piece of rock and roll history by the time the film debuted. Seeing it Oct. 5 at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles in celebration of its 45th anniversary, it’s clear how much history and American music culture was also saying “Good Night” with Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm and the Band’s unofficial leader Robbie Robertson (who called the group “The Brotherhood.”)
To help sort out the importance of “Waltz’s” place in rock history was music historian Harvey Kubernik, who shared his recollections of attending the concert at the Winterland Theater in San Francisco; music rights firm CEO/founder Olivier Chastain,...

In a new, withering exposé about how easily Rotten Tomatoes, the popular review aggregator website, can be manipulated, it is revealed that a movie publicity firm called Bunker 15 paid for positive reviews for the 2018 Daisy Ridley movie “Ophelia.”
The firm paid critics $50 or more for each review, according to the New York Magazine/Vulture piece, which cited internal company emails and critics.
The pay-for-positive-reviews bit was part of a larger ploy – if the film garnered enough positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it would look more appealing to a potential distributor. They would also persuade writers to encourage Rotten Tomatoes that mixed reviews receive a “positive” distinction on the site. They also somehow made it so that negative reviews of the movie weren’t counted.
As for the fate of “Ophelia,” a month after it was certified “fresh” IFC Films announced it had acquired the film for distribution in the United States.

In 2017, director Martin Scorsese wrote an essay in The Hollywood Reporter which referred to the movie review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes as being "hostile to serious filmmakers." Now, there's new evidence that Rotten Tomatoes is not only hostile to filmmakers, but also to anyone who reads a Rotten Tomatoes score.
Vulture has published an article revealing that, for at least the past five years, Rotten Tomatoes has been hacked and manipulated by a PR firm that has actually paid obscure, low-level members of Rotten Tomatoes to provide positive coverage of the films that PR company represents, all in a shameless effort to boost those films' Rt scores.
This brazen hijacking, combined with film studios' increasing reliance on the Tomatometer as a marketing tool and the long-complained-about and imprecise nature of how Rotten Tomatoes scores actually work, is yet another reason why that platform should not hold the position it holds...

There’s surprising news out of “Celebration,” the movable feast pep rally that the Star Wars franchise holds for itself. This year’s event is being held in London, and it opened with a bang as big as an exploding Death Star.
Daisy Ridley will return to the galaxy far, far away and reprise her role of Rey (sometimes called Rey Skywalker) in one of the upcoming Star Wars films. The untitled project is set 15 years after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” Ridley’s Rey will appear as Jedi master, teaching at a Jedi academy. It is unclear if she is the principal character or not.
Ridley herself appeared on stage with director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Lucasfilm big Kathleen Kennedy to the gasps of the assembled fans.

Where do you go after headlining a "Star Wars" trilogy? It's a dilemma multiple actors have faced over the decades, and the outcomes have varied wildly. Some have gone on to enjoy incredible careers in fields such as voice acting and script doctoring, whereas others have followed their time playing in the immensely popular sci-fi fantasy sandbox by making actually real movies like the "'Romeo and Juliet,' but with pizza businesses" rom-com "Little Italy." Journeying to a galaxy far, far away can be a proper roll of the dice, in other words, so far as the impact it can have on your professional ambitions as a performer is concerned.
In the wake of the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, its leads have all found themselves in dramatically different places. Admittedly, not much has changed for Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, both of whom have continued to make fascinating career choices,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 15, “Amina.”] Just as Fear the Walking Dead is welcoming back Kim Dickens as Madison Clark, the AMC drama said goodbye to another Clark. The May 29 episode, “Amina,” marked Alycia Debnam-Carey’s last, and following its airing, the actress posted a long farewell on Instagram about “the end of an extraordinary and life changing journey of playing Alicia Clark.” The show “has gifted me so much,” she wrote. “It has been the most extraordinary training ground as an actor where I’ve been given the chance to grow and learn. I’ve had the honour of working with so many inspiring and talented people. It provided new opportunities, such as directing and it has bonded me to such incredible fans that have supported me along the way.” The star made her directorial debut with the Season 7 episode, “Ofelia.” Debnam-Carey was with the show from the beginning,...

[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Fear The Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 11, “Ofelia.”] After seven seasons of playing Alicia Clark on Fear The Walking Dead, Alycia Debnam-Carey has stepped into a new role: director. Debnam-Carey talked to TV Insider about which scene she was most excited (and most nervous) to shoot, how she felt about putting Luciana (Danay Garcia) front and center in her episode, and — as a bonus! — we’ve included an excellent question that fellow Fear actor Omid Abtahi asked her during Fear’s preview junket. Lauren “Lo” Smith/AMC During the preview junket, you said you were excited to direct on Fear because you know the show like the back of your hand. How did your longevity on the series play into the choices you made behind the camera? Alycia Debnam-Carey: Because I’ve been on Fear for so long, it weaved its way into my choices without me knowing in so many ways.

Fear the Walking Dead has been straddling the fine line between good and bad throughout Fear the Walking Dead Season 7, but Fear the Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 11 was a step in the right direction.
If there's been one complaint about the series, it's that the characters who matter and deserve storylines are regularly sidelined or forgotten about entirely.
If you watch Fear the Walking Dead online, you know Daniel and Luciana are some of the longest-serving cast members, so their return to the forefront felt more like a way of appeasing the complaining fans.
Daniel's health has been declining for a while now, and titling the episode "Ofelia" reiterated that this outing would be a deep dive into some of the better characters.
The complicated dynamic between Daniel and Luciana has been exciting, to say the least, but it was obvious that, at times, he thought Luciana was his deceased daughter.

She teams up with a factory, and then "fights to have her art recognised and for men to acknowledge that women can do whatever they put their minds to." Daisy Ridley opens up in the February 2021 edition of Tatler magazine (via Yahoo) about being labeled as “intimidating” and “quite aggressive” by crew members during different productions. Ridley’s career includes three “Star Wars” movies, “Murder on the Orient Express,” “Ophelia,” and the upcoming Doug Liman-directed action movie “Chaos Walking,” among other titles. It was on “Chaos Walking” where a crew member told the actress she’s intimidating.
“I’ve been told that I’m intimidating,” Ridley said. “That was on ‘Chaos Walking.’ I was having my hair done, having my wig put on. I remember thinking, ‘God, should I be smaller? Should I be quieter?’ I’ve been called aggressive, too. My energy is ‘quite aggressive.’ That was during a meeting with a director.”

Making the transition from being a complete unknown to playing a major role in a blockbuster franchise doesn’t always lead to a long and successful career as a top-tier Hollywood talent, and it seems especially true when it comes to Star Wars. Mark Hamill never managed to escape the shadow of Luke Skywalker despite enjoying a lengthy second life as one of the industry’s most accomplished voice actors, while Hayden Christensen quickly faded into obscurity once his time in a galaxy far, far away came to an end.
Daisy Ridley will be hoping to avoid a similar fate following The Rise of Skywalker, which catapulted her to worldwide fame and recognition, with The Force Awakens marking just her second-ever movie when it hit theaters five years ago. Ridley has only made two live-action appearances in the interim as the lead of little-seen drama Ophelia and as part of...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Albertina Carri's The Daughters of Fire is exclusively showing March 23 - April 21, 2020 in Mubi's Undiscovered series.Dating back to making shorts in the late 1990s, Albertina Carri has become a significant iconoclast in Argentine cinema in both realms of fiction and non-fiction films. Film and politics run in her blood and have long informed her confrontational and subversive sensibilities. As a queer woman, sex and gender amid homophobia, sexism, maschismo culture, and the male gaze also inform her work and career, which in addition to filmmaking also has her working within Argentine film culture as a major creative force behind Argentina’s Lgbtq film festival, Asterisco. Her most recent feature, The Daughters of Fire, is provocative in its explicit scenes among a group of queer women in which sex is presented in shockingly honest and upfront detail in fully pornographic splendor.

In 1968, the Band recorded “The Weight,” a song full of images and characters that Robbie Robertson said he had been storing in his imagination for years. Robertson admits in his autobiography, Testimony, that he struggled to articulate to producer John Simon what the song was even about, but it’s become the Band’s most well-known classic, and it still echoes loudly today. Playing for Change, a group dedicated to “opening up how people see the world through the lens of music and art,” recently spent two years filming artists around the world,...

The horrors of war are never far from the frame in Sam Mendes’ brutal, bruising single-tale World War I drama “1917.” And yet the film — the first that the “American Beauty” and “Skyfall” director has ever written, alongside rising screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and based loosely on some of his grandfather’s own experiences in the so-called Great War — opens in a moment of quiet repose. A pair of young soldiers rest in a field as a gentle breeze tickles the flowers and the trees, idyllic enough to make anyone forget what’s lingering just a few steps away. As the duo are suddenly dispatched into action, the camera pulls back, plunging the obedient Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and his more hardened pal Schofield back into the reality of the situation, as they descend into a nightmarish collection of trenches that lead all the way to the front line, and many worse dangers beyond that.

Festival favorite “Maiden” is the latest in documentary to buttress a weak summer at the specialty box office. “Maiden” opened in New York and Los Angeles at a level below some of the year’s top entries, but should build word of mouth with Sony Pictures Classics’ careful rollout, as initial audiences were enthusiastic. It’s slim pickings at the moment.
Multiple other films with solid reviews –“The Chambermaid” (Kino Lorber), “Ophelia” (IFC), “The Other Story” (Strand), and “The Plagiarists” (Kimstim) — also made limited debuts but didn’t report lesser grosses. This happens occasionally, but not reporting this many estimates is a sign of an overall problematic market.
A bigger problem is top titles that skip the normal specialized slow expansion route like “Booksmart” (United Artists) and “Late Night” (Amazon). Both have yielded disappointing wider performances, particularly the latter. Both continue at some key arthouse situations.

New releases have seen some struggles as of late, with several summer sequels debuting well below expectations and this weekend sees yet another sequel in Annabelle Comes Home attempting to avoid a similar fate. On top of that, Universal unveils an original project in Danny Boyle's Yesterday looking to ride a wave of positivity into the weekend. At the top of the charts, look for Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 4 to repeat at #1. Looking at past Toy Story releases the second wide weekend has seen a range of performances, but we're looking specifically at Toy Story 3's -46% second weekend drop as well as Incredibles 2 and Finding Dory, which dropped -56% and -46% respectively. Given Toy Story 4's debut hues a bit closer to Toy Story 3 and Dory we're leaning more toward anticipating a similar, -46% drop this weekend, which would result in a sophomore performance over $65 million,...

Ophelia is one of the most maligned characters in literary history. A creative re-imagining of Denmark’s most famous royalty yarn, “Ophelia” does more than just provide new insight into “Hamlet,” it also contextualizes the 400+ year-old play via characters that seem more alive now than ever before. An origin story of sorts, “Ophelia” delves into the eponymous character’s childhood and adolescence at court, using elements from Shakespeare’s play along with a creative reevaluation of the young woman as an active agent of change within the narrative.

We’ve had “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” and “Fortinbras Gets Drunk,” and now there’s “Ophelia,” an intelligent and gorgeous spin on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” from the point of view of the melancholy prince’s beloved.
“Hamlet” of course has its share of memorable characters — recall the bit player who claimed that the play was about a grave digger who meets a prince — but this provocative adaptation of Lisa Klein’s novel gives an oft-maligned character purpose and agency. It is not betrayal and madness that bewitches this Ophelia but toxic masculinity.
Director Claire McCarthy (“The Waiting City”) and adapter Semi Chellas (“Mad Men”) give us an Elsinore Castle and its court that’s as handsomely mounted as any number of straightforward Shakespearean adaptations, but they cleverly tweak the proceedings to make us reexamine key moments from an entirely different angle.

To be or not to be. That is the question that has fascinated and bedeviled centuries of theatergoers and one eternally waffling prince. It is also the conundrum faced by any attempts to reinterpret or revisit William Shakespeare’s hallowed Hamlet text from a different vantage. Set in the medieval—if a stage director is so inclined—Danish castle of Elsinore, Hamlet’s great halls are populated by a dozen ambiguous and mostly tragic players. None more so than Ophelia. The doomed waif of generations of male writers’ admiring pity, she is almost always cast as the poor dear driven to madness and suicide due to the vacillating whims of a poor excuse for a hero. It’s a beautiful role derived from a different time and different set of values.

Hayao Miyazaki needs no special introduction. The Japanese filmmaker, second after Kurosawa to receive the honorary Oscar for his outstanding motion picture achievements, has appealed to a broad international audience, winning many hearts belonging not only to anime enthusiasts. Few times already he has announced his retirement, but none of those announcements proved permanent in effect. It seems he just can’t stop making movies and creativity pulsates in his veins.
The documentarist, Kaku Arakawa, had a rare opportunity to get an insight into the master’s creative process. After meeting the director in 2005, he was allowed to shadow him at work (and even outside the Ghibli studio during more private moments) to register hours of behind-the-scenes material. The only condition was that he had to film all by himself, with no other crew members. The 4-episode TV miniseries “10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki” made for the national Japanese broadcaster Nhk is the result.
