Zachary Levi was well on his way to becoming one of the A-listers of Hollywood after starring in the widely successful Shazam! However, his career seems to have peaked with that DC film as his films since have consistently been underwhelming or downright box-office disasters.
His latest film, Harold and the Purple Crayon, will reportedly debut on streaming this week, barely a month after its theatrical release. The film reportedly earned $23 million at the global box office, against a $40 million budget. With Shazam! Fury of the Gods also being a disaster, Levi’s career might just be over.

Things have been looking up at the box office as of late, with movies like "Inside Out 2," "Deadpool & Wolverine," and even Neon's indie horror hit "Longlegs" lifting us out of a pretty dreadful situation. Unfortunately, the rising tide doesn't always lift all boats. Sony's "Harold and the Purple Crayon" hit theaters this past weekend, instantly becoming one of the biggest misfires of the year thus far. The only saving grace is that we're talking about a mid-budget movie and not one with a full-on blockbuster budget. Even so, things are looking rough with no reason to believe they're going to get much better.
Director Carlos Saldanha's "Harold and the Purple Crayon" opened to just $6 million domestically while playing on more than 3,300 screens. It placed at number six on the charts, placing behind "Inside Out 2" ($6.7 million), which was on its eighth weekend in theaters. This...

Exclusive: After successfully launching the Extraction film franchise at Netflix, director Sam Hargrave has his eyes set on another potential franchise with a piece of IP that is revving its engines to get out the gate. Sources tell Deadline that Skydance and Mattel Films have closed a deal with Hargrave to direct a live-action movie based on Matchbox, Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line. David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper are penning the script.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films. The project will be shepherded by Aimee Rivera for Skydance and Elizabeth Bassin and Andrew Scannell for Mattel Films.
The iconic Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

Carla Gugino was just 27 years old when she filmed 2001’s Spy Kids, playing a secret agent who has children ages 9 and 11.
Now, Gugino is amazed at how she was cast as a mother of two school-aged children at that tender age.
Speaking with BuzzFeed, Gugino, now 52, talked about co-starring with Antonio Banderas in the original three movies, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Thy were spies whose children (Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara) are also called into action.
“It is so funny because I was 27,” Gugino recalled. “It was a really beautiful kind of double-edged sword because I love that movie so much. And the whole experience was incredible, and the movies continue.”
“I love Ingrid Cortes,” her character. “But it was funny because I was 10 years, at least, too young for the role because I was a spy for 10 years and then somehow had children who were like 9 and 11. So it was physically totally impossible.

Carla Gugino recently told BuzzFeed that her beloved role in Robert Rodriguez’s 2001 family action film “Spy Kids” was “physically totally impossible.” The actor was 27 years old when she filmed the movie and played Ingrid Cortes, the mother of two spies. “Ma’am, I’m 10 years old, you think I could write this alone? I don’t think so.” The age demographics in Hollywood are about to skew a lot younger because a pre-teen has pitched an idea that is soon enough going to be written for the screen – and it’s a wonder it hasn’t been made yet. Here we have Home Alone meets The Godfather, in which we imagine one scene where Kevin McCallister jumps on his parents’ bed, only to find a decapitated horse head at the foot of it. The title? Little Wiseguy.
But the pitch doesn’t come from a desperate studio suit but rather a 10-year-old named Connor Esterson, who you may actually be familiar with, as he co-starred in last year’s Spy Kids: Armageddon. And while Esterson has very likely seen Home Alone numerous times around the holiday season, he admits he...

Hollywood is proof that talent has no age bar, and 10-year-old Connor Esterson is a testament to that. The 5th grader who made his presence felt on screen in Spy Kids: Armageddon has now turned his attention to writing. Esterson has been in talks with bigwigs in the writing fraternity, namely Nick Vallelonga and George Gallo, to pitch a screenplay featuring a young boy’s relationship with a gangster.
Connor Esterson in Spy Kids: Armageddon
The veteran writers were extremely impressed with the aspiring screenwriter’s idea and are now in talks to find ways to get his narrative up and running. While this is a big achievement for someone so young, Esterson’s story is being criticized by netizens for its uncanny similarity to a 1993 Robert De Niro film.

Oscar Parties Are Full of Phonies (But They’re Getting Kicked Out)
Winning an Academy Award opens a lot of doors, especially at Oscar-night afterparties. One of Hollywood’s sacred red carpet rules is that merely holding an Oscar can be a golden ticket to just about every swell soiree in town. But in recent years, some gate-crashers have been exploiting that loophole by turning up with ersatz trophies or, as happened this year, an actual Oscar that didn’t belong to them. Rambling has learned that one non-invitee who arrived at Vanity Fair’s ultra-exclusive fete hauling a vintage 1986 Oscar quickly found himself kicked to the curb. The person was not the award winner, a rep for the magazine confirms to THR, adding that the trophy was confiscated. “Our head of security is working on tracking down its rightful owner.” It’s unclear how the crasher got his hands on the golden boy,...

That didn’t take long. Skydance Animation has found a new home, signing a multi-year agreement with Netflix to develop and produce animated movies to be released directly on Netflix. This deal means Skydance’s full existing animated feature slate will be released exclusively on Netflix.
Deal comes as a multi-year pact with Apple comes to an end. Skydance Animation is already staked with Netflix, and the deal expands on a number of different projects. The first new one is Spellbound, a film that began its road at Apple, but will now debut on Netflix in 2024. That will be followed by Pookoo in 2025.
This deal expands on the existing relationship between the two companies who have already partnered on a number of projects including the films The Adam Project, Heart of Stone, The Old Guard, and Spy Kids: Armageddon along with the series Fubar, Altered Carbon and Grace and Frankie.

David Beckham scored a goal with his latest Netflix docuseries.
Beckham took the top spot among the streamer’s English-language series in its debut week, securing 12.4M views.
That means that Sex Education Season 4 was knocked down a peg, but it still managed to hold onto No. 2 with 6.6M views — which is quite a drop from the 13.4M views it secured the week prior. It must have been a slow week for streaming though, because that was nearly twice the amount of views as Love Is Blind Season 5, which came in at No. 3 with 3.7M.
One Piece remains on the list for its sixth week in a row at No. 4, this time taking home an additional 2.5M views. Season 5 of Virgin River logged its fifth week on the list, taking sixth place with 2M views.
The rest of the list included several docuseries — Encounters at #5 (2M views), Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal...

Robert Rodriguez made his feature directorial debut with El Mariachi, an ultra low-budget action movie that launched his career. He followed it up with two sequels, Desperado in 1995 and Once Upon a Time in Mexico in 2003, but the director told The Wrap that he’d love to revisit the series with a new sequel.

The clever, kids-have-to-be-spys-after-their-spy-parents-are-captured conceit returns in “Spy Kids: Armageddon” (now streaming), the fifth film in the franchise and one yet again written and directed by series creator Rodriguez. This time it’s a new family, led by Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi, who are battling an evil game designer (Billy Magnussen). Thankfully, their kids (Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla) spring into action. It’s got a ton of humor, a ton of heart, some classically “Spy Kids”-y action and some brand-new gadgets. What more could you want?
TheWrap spoke to Rodriguez, whose first “Spy Kids” movie premiered in 2001, about returning to the franchise, what other of his movies he would want to revisit and whether there’ll be another “Alita: Battle Angel” movie.

Following a limited theatrical premiere, “No One Will Save You” debuted on Hulu on Friday. It ranks as the No. 1 most-streamed film for the weekend of Sept. 22-24 on Whip Media’s Movie Ranker, which uses viewership data from its consumer app, TV Time, which has over 28 million registered users globally.
The film breaks the mold by only having one line of dialogue throughout the entirety of its 93-minute runtime. The sci-fi horror film stars Kaitlyn Dever in the role of Brynn, a young woman who finds herself fighting for her life after aliens invade her home.
After breaking records for Disney+ last week, Pixar’s “Elemental” continued to attract viewers to the platform this weekend, earning the No. 2 spot on the ranker. With writers off the picket lines, they might consider news pitches to address what’s clearly an underfed genre: Movie star as comedienne, and we’re not talking rom-coms.
Cases in point: Well, there’s the Margot Robbie juggernaut that is “Barbie” (Warner Bros.), with its $630 million domestic/over $1.4 billion worldwide theatrical take to date. Perhaps even more relevant is “No Hard Feelings” (Sony), a totally original project that didn’t have the benefit of an iconic Mattel doll as its core IP.
As expected, “Barbie” repeated as #1 on all charts. However, “Feelings” — starring and produced by Jennifer Lawrence as an Uber driver hired to elevate the confidence of a shy 19-year-old entering college — has remained on or near #1 since it hit home viewing in early August.
“Feelings” grossed $50 million in domestic theaters and another $36 million foreign, which isn’t great when it cost $45 million before marketing.

Plot: When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.
Review: Robert Rodriguez has always had two distinct film output: mature genre offerings aimed at adult audiences and family-friendly action flicks aimed at the youngest viewers. While Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios has used in-house special effects work to deliver pulpy flicks like Machete and the recent Hypnotic, the full-blown CGI worlds of the Spy Kids films have given the indie filmmaker a playground to make every childhood fantasy come to life. After four films centered on the Cortez family of spies, Rodriguez and his son Racer Max have written a franchise reboot centered on two new pint-sized agents as they use their knowledge of video games to save their parents and the world.

The latest film by Sin City director Robert Rodriguez just released and it’s a reboot of his Spy Kids franchise titled Spy Kids: Armageddon. The franchise started with its first installment Spy Kids in 2001 and was very well received by the public. The strong Latino family dynamics and the new technology special effects were all responsible for the overwhelming love the film received. Rodriguez made three more sequels, and they all went down in quality. This new one is a fresh story with a new family that mixes in the fears associated with the budding AI technology. The characters in the film have the same warmth and humorous quality that made the franchise what it is. It is very much a movie for kids with some great moral lessons hidden in the narrative. The elements of video games and technology have their own allure and the film hints at...

Robert Rodriguez brings his kids action series back to life with pleasant, if visually flat, results
For a few late millennials, the Spy Kids franchise has assumed a sort of vaguely remembered, but beloved mantle. I was seven years old when the first film hit theaters or, more accurately for the target demographic, hit a child’s tentpoles of culture – Happy Meal toys, TV advertisements, whatever spy “gear” classmates brought in for show and tell. The movies, particularly the 2001 original, were wacky and grandiose, goofily futurist adventures with cartoonish stakes. If you were a kid, Spy Kids (along with the 2002 sequel and 2003 3D edition) were an ultimate fantasy, with sick gadgets and cool parents (international super spies played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino).
Spy Kids: Armageddon, Netflix’s reboot of the franchise with the original writer-director Robert Rodriguez, understands the wells of nostalgia it’s tapping, though it doesn’t always reach it.

There are movies for children, and then there are childish movies. The latest directorial venture of American director Robert Rodriguez titled Spy Kids: Armageddon seems to be way more tilted towards the latter type. Rodriguez has his own niche in filmmaking. He started with the Mexican milieu that he knew so well and made films such as El Mariachi and Desperado, and later went on to direct cult classics such as From Dusk Till Dawn and his masterpiece Sin City. His films are so different from one another that one look at his IMDb page will tell us that he isn’t interested in telling similar stories. Yet he seems to have a strong affinity with the Spy Kids universe. He directed the first one in 2001 and then made three more sequels in the coming years, with the last one being released in 2011. He has now returned with the fifth installment,...

2001’s Spy Kids is a film that almost everyone is familiar with. This famous American spy action franchise revolved around some children who got pulled into an espionage organization. Even discussing the film takes us back to those days when we were kids, and these films would show up on our TV screens, bringing a big smile to our faces. Thumb-Thumb Robot or Floops Castle—some of the most iconic elements from this original franchise—are still unforgettable for kids of the 90s and early 2000s. However, the good news is that Netflix is on its way to release a reboot of this famous franchise, naming it Spy Kids: Armageddon. Helmed by the creator of the original franchise, Robert Rodriguez, this Netflix film is all set to evoke nostalgia by offering us a wonderful experience through these mischievous kids and their worried parents. The trailer for Spy Kids: Armageddon was released a few days ago,...

Robert Rodriguez is a filmmaker who found a way to work his career on his own terms. It helps that he is practically self-sustaining with his own studio and insists on doing some of the biggest parts of productions himself. The filmmaker recently explored the Hitchcockian thriller world with his mind-bending suspense film, Hypnotic, with Ben Affleck. Rodriguez is also a family-oriented director in every sense. Not only has he had success with the family action series, Spy Kids, but he also involves his own family with his movies. His cousins have been featured in his films, his former wife continues to be a producing partner, and his sons are now joining him behind the camera.
