Season 21 of NCIS has already ended and we have to wait at least two months for season 22. How do you fill your free time?
We offer you naval stories packed in the format of a full-length movie – if you watch one a week, you can just make it to the release of the new season of NCIS.
1. In the Heart of the Sea, 2015
In 1819, the ship Essex set sail from a port in Massachusetts with a crew of two dozen to hunt whales. In the fall of 1820, a year and a half of successful hunting was interrupted when a giant sperm whale attacked the ship, forcing the sailors to take to the boats. For more than three months, they struggled to survive.
In this movie, director Ron Howard tries to connect fiction and reality, adding a sense of mysticism to the story of the voyage of the whaling ship Essex.

"Star Trek" fans are a notoriously finicky and aggressively opinionated lot, but I don't think it's terribly controversial to suggest that, of the six films featuring "The Original Series" cast, the majority of Trekkers hold the two directed by Nicholas Meyer, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," to be the best of the bunch.
Made for $32 million less than Robert Wise's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," Meyer, who'd never seen a single episode of the show, got the franchise's big-screen iteration back on track by dispensing with the previous film's occasionally draggy reverence. Though he inherited the notion of calling back to Tos' "Space Seed" episode, Meyer placed his stamp on the film by imbuing the tale with evocative literary allusions to Herman Melville's "Moby-Dick" and Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities." It's a tightly structured yarn that managed...

Television is a fast-paced business, where a show can be written, developed, ordered, cast, produced, and aired all within the course of a year. But sometimes, executives get ahead of themselves and shows are announced prematurely, or circumstances change, forcing delay.
IndieWire combed through some high-profile TV announcements from the past few years that haven’t yet seen the light of day, and asked their status. Some are still in the works; some are still “in development,” which could be code for “we don’t want to admit yet that this show is dead”; and some have quietly faded away.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
In one of the busier weekends of the month, two of the movies did better than I predicted and two did worse. The real winner of the weekend was Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, which did far better than anyone thought with an opening weekend of $28.5 million in just 2,260 theaters or $12,611 per theater. It ended up completely demolishing Tom Cruise’s action sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which opened in almost 1,500 more theaters, but at least that ended up around where I predicted with $22.9 million. Ouija: Origin of Evil came out slightly below my prediction to take third place with $14 million, while the Fox comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses bombed even worse than I expected with $5.5 million in 3,000 theaters.

Emile Hirsch (Savages) and Holliday Grainger (TV’s The Borgias) play the notorious couple in 2013′s TV mini-series Bonnie & Clyde.

They stayed ahead of authorities for a while, until their final showdown.
Oscar-winners Holly Hunter (The Piano) and William Hurt (Moby Dick) also star in the miniseries, which was directed by Bruce Beresford (Mao’s Last Dancer) on a script by Joe Batteer and John Rice, the team behind Windtalkers and TV movie Anna Nicole.
Bonnie & Clyde aired on History, Lifetime and A&E to mixed but generally positive reviews from critics. Miami Herald‘s Glenn Garvin called it a “perfectly entertaining gangster picture.

It’s been a decade since The X-Files came to its televised conclusion – it was allowed to live on in a couple of theatrical films – and series star Gillian Anderson has mostly stayed away from TV roles since her time as Agent Scully came to an end. She’s been sticking to miniseries, such as Encore’s Moby Dick, and British TV since 2002, but she’s breaking her ten-year long streak and returning to American television with a role in the Bryan Fuller thriller Hannibal. It makes you wonder; if Hannibal can grab the attention of someone like Anderson, perhaps it has more potential than might be immediately thought.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Anderson’s return will put her in the shoes of Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, the therapist of the one and only Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelson). “Her intelligence and sophistication, not to mention her pedigree of ground-breaking TV,...

Exciting Hannibal casting news. Sci-fi fan-favorite Gillian Anderson returning to broadcast series television after a decade to join writer-producer Bryan Fuller’s NBC serial-killer thriller. And perhaps the best part is the role she’s playing….
In a multi-episode arc, Anderson is going to play murderous psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter’s (Mads Mikkelsen) own therapist.
“Every therapist needs their own head examined and we are ecstatic that Gillian Anderson has chosen Hannibal to mark her return to American television after 10 years to portray Dr. Lecter’s personal psychiatrist,” Fuller said in a statement. “Her intelligence and sophistication, not to mention her pedigree of ground-breaking TV,...

"The Lord of the Rings" was one of the most popular series in film history, earning over $2.9 billion worldwide and raking in an amazing 17 Oscars.
And, to nobody's surprise, the stars of "The Lord of the Rings" have since gone on to become major film and television stars: Viggo Mortensen has had acclaimed turns in movies like "A History of Violence," Orlando Bloom topped the box office again with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, Dominic Monaghan anchored the cult classic TV show "Lost." The list goes on and on.
But one name is conspicuously absent from that list: Billy Boyd.
Boyd, of course, played the lovably naive hobbit Pippin. And even before "The Lord of the Rings" was out of theaters, he seemed on the verge of major stardom, appearing in the 2004 Best Picture nominee "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" (which lost to "The Return of the King...

Though Gillian Anderson is best known for her role as Dana Scully on The X-Files, the actress is also a classically trained thespian who has used her talents in such varied fare as the Bleak House mini-series, the Royal-focused series Any Human Heart, and at least two television takes on classic material – Moby Dick and Great Expectations. What we’re saying is, she’s not just Scully, but damn if Anderson doesn’t know her way around some good sci-fi, so it’s heartening news that she’s joined a very intriguing new project with just that kind of bent. Deadline Quantico reports that Anderson has joined Haley Joel Osment, Rufus Sewell, and Victor Garber in Richie Mehta‘s (Amal) new film, I’ll Follow You Down. While we don’t yet know too much about the film (and with its mysterious logline, it’s likely to stay that way), we do know that it centers on...

Gillian Anderson, famous for The X-Files, stuns as Miss Havisham in Sunday’s Great Expecations. She tells me about turning down Downton Abbey, her British accent—and possibly playing Scully again. Over at The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "Gillian Anderson is Back!" in which I talk to the former star of The X-Files about whether she's open to reprising her role as Dana Scully, playing Miss Havisham, turning down Downton Abbey, her accent, and her new television project, The Fall. Gillian Anderson is no stranger to strange worlds. The former star of The X-Files, which became a worldwide hit and spawned two feature films, Anderson has, for now anyway, traded in Dana Scully’s FBI-issued handgun and severe suits for the tight-laced corsets and flowing frocks of such period dramas as Bleak House, The House of Mirth, Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, The Crimson Petal and the White,...
