President Donald Trump announced in a series of tweets that transgender people will no longer be allowed to serve in the military, and Twitter users are reacting.
Trump wrote in three tweets that the military “must be focused” and “cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
U.S. Army Pvt. Chelsea Manning called the move, “cowardice.”

It’s only right that Emmy-winning actor and comic Patton Oswalt will next be seen in “The Circle,” James Ponsoldt’s big screen adaptation of the popular Dave Eggers novel of the same name, which dives deep inside a nefarious internet company that values knowledge above all else. Oswalt has long been a prolific presence on the web, thanks to his amusing Twitter account and a Facebook page that he frequently uses to get both personal and political.
In the film, Oswalt plays Tom Stenton, the somewhat shadowy COO of The Circle, a powerful social media operation that exploits bright-eyed new staffer Mae (Emma Watson). When she joins the sprawling corporation, she’s soon sucked into some of the more ambitious ideas hatched by Stenton and visionary Steve Jobs-type Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks). Turns out, the internet can be a scary place, and privacy just might be the last real frontier.

For hardcore fans of Ed Sheeran, picking a single favorite song off of his new album, Divide, is like picking a favorite child. While "Supermarket Flowers" might be the most emotional, and "Galway Girl" will have you booking a flight to Ireland Asap, the three best tracks off of Divide (arguably) all have something in common: they were inspired by his current girlfriend Cherry Seaborn. Related:Who Are Ed Sheeran's Songs About? Allow Us to Investigate "Perfect" This slow, sweet ballad is reminiscent of "Thinking Out Loud," and will no doubt be heard at wedding receptions for the next few years. With lyrics like "Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know / She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I'll share her home / I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets / To carry love, to carry children of our own," it's practically bursting with romance.

A couple of months ago, we noted how it’s been a seriously underwhelming year for Chinese-language cinema – an assessment that stands despite the recent release of Berlinale-winner Crosscurrent. Well, turns out the Middle Kingdom might have a year-end surprise or two up its sleeve after all. Having scored a Fipresci prize at Toronto and the prestigious Golden Seashell at San Sebastián, I Am Not Madame Bovary is a healthy return to form for veteran director Xiaogang Feng that, while not exactly hitting the ball out of the park, delivers a genuinely funny, slyly observant diagnosis of contemporary China complete with lush, absurdist flair.
The many cultural references that give a societal satire like this its texture but inevitably get lost in translation begin with the title. Instead of Flaubert’s world-known creation, it’s actually Pan Jinlian that our heroine Li Xuelian (played by Bingbing Fan) denies of being.

The powerful Chinese satire I Am Madame Bovary has earned critical acclaim all over the world. U.S. fans are in for a treat when the film hits local theaters on November 18, 2016!
I Am Madame Bovary boasts a stellar production and artistic team. In the director’s chair is Feng Xiaogang, one of China’s most commercially successful artists. Feng Xiaogang is known for his blazing black comedies and genre-bending movies like Cell Phone (2003), If You Are The One (2008), Aftershock (2010), and Personal Tailor (2013). He pushes his craft and style even more in I Am Madame Bovary – a film that piercingly examines the bureaucracy that plagues Chinese government. We were sold on I Am Not Madame Bovary based on its teaser trailer, which largely features beautiful paintings before moving into even more gorgeous imagery with a peculiar circular aspect ratio. Stunning cinematography aside, the plot itself has us intrigued, following a café proprietor who is attempting to get retribution in a decade-long fight for divorce. While we didn’t get a chance to see it at Tiff, Well Go USA will release the film this fall and they’ve now unveiled the full trailer.
The latest film from Feng Xiaogang (Aftershock, Back to 1942, If You Are the One) actually picked up the Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci) for Special Presentations at Tiff this year. Katie Donovan first saw a photo of Dalton Prager posted on Facebook from his hospital bed. The date was August 1, 2009. "I'll never forget it," she tells People. Both had been born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease leading to thick buildup of mucus in the lungs and other organs that restricts and worsens the ability to breathe over time. Patients have a current average life expectancy of 40 years. Dalton was then 17. Katie was 18. "Hey, I see you're in the hospital if you ever need somebody to talk to," Katie wrote to him. La-headquartered China Lion Film Distribution has picked up Chinese titles Running Man and Somewhere Only We Know for release in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Both will go day-and-date with their Mainland debuts later this month and in mid-February, the latter taking advantage of the early Chinese New Year corridor. (See teasers below.)
Each of the films has a strong hook for Chinese, and Korean, audiences. Running Man mixes talent from both countries and is adapted from a popular reality TV series which itself was based on an original Korean format. Somewhere Only We Know taps the trend of romance and nostalgia, and stars Kris Wu, a former member of Korean/Chinese boy band Exo.
Running Man, which China Lion picked up from Wanda Media Group, is a feature spinoff of the popular reality TV show that revolves around celebrity teams who compete against one another for an ultimate prize.

The Sherlock Holmes played by Benedict Cumberbatch is the most brilliant problem solver on television. The Sherlock Holmes played by Jonny Lee Miller in Elementary comes pretty close, but I give the edge to the “high functioning” sociopath with the “mind palace” in his head. (Now that’s some Intelligence.) The third and final installment of Sherlock’s third season challenged the master detective with a most vexing conundrum, a test of both imagination and morality, one that has become increasingly popular in our hero fiction of late: To kill or not to kill.

Sixteen-year-old high school freshman and Tourette’s sufferer Carlos Guevara (pictured, happily mauled) was by far the emotional highlight of tonight’s third installment — after explaining to the judges that “Sometimes I beep and yell and my body moves…the only thing that could help me was music,” he delivered a cover of John Mayer’s “Gravity” more remarkable for the teary-eyed reactions from the judges and Carlos’ devoted gaggle of friends than the power of the brave kid’s vocal.

This season starts off a bit bleak and Nathan seems to be this dejected version of himself, not the confident guy he used to be. So can you talk a little bit about what it has been like playing that version of the character?
Lucas Bryant: Yeah, that was a really cool turn for me. I mean you know as you said, Nathan has always been maybe a little bit too sure of himself. I mean sure, he’s always got doubts, but he had this kind of blind trust in himself, and Audrey, and that as you saw at the end of Season 3 led to a disastrous outcome. After telling Big Brother that he knew Dexter was trying to be painted as the series "villain", Callum revealed that he was worried the tactics would see his fellow nominee remain in the house.
"[He's] using his villain status to be popular to the outside world," he explained.
"He will be in the final which will annoy me even more because he's a little bitch.

It’s understandable that given how long the video game medium has now been going, and how many video games are released every year, that we’re going to be liable to experience a few repeated plots here and there. Still, like the world of film, developers often tend towards whatever appears to be selling best; after Half-Life hit it big, we had countless sci-fi Fps games trying to ape its success, and the same happened with console shooters once Halo made a splash on the Xbox. Trends are one thing, but when developers unimaginatively pilfer plots from hit games and movies, soullessly recycling them with slightly different visuals and settings, it leaves a sour, crass taste, and that’s exactly why indie games like Journey and Fez have done so well; they’re imaginative and have clearly had a lot of thought put into them despite the low-level design elements.

Feng Xiaogang is perhaps China's most clever commercial film director. Reportedly having never directed a film that failed to make a handsome profit, he has had a string of huge local box office hits in recent years, including 2007's Assembly, 2008's If You Are The One and 2010's Aftershock. In fact, Aftershock became China's all-time highest grossing film upon its release; a record it held until the release of Jiang Wen's Let the Bullet Fly. Now with his new film Back to 1942, Feng looks set to reclaim that title. Back to 1942 is based on a novel by Liu Zhenyun, also credited as the film's screenwriter, and tells the true story of the devastating Henan Province famine that claimed over three million lives in 1942, a time when China was in the middle of...

So he made a complete fool of himself by following the guy down the stairwell and talking about how "tough" Penny's boyfriend is. The problem is, as Penny later pointed out, the guy knew Leonard was her boyfriend. His picture is hanging on her refrigerator.
When they finally talked about it in the hall while she was on her way to work, Penny's frustration lead to an unexpected moment of honesty.

We’re a few weeks behind on Summit Entertainment’s “New Face Fridays” with the Twilight Fansites, so bear with us as we catch you up a few weeks. First we had the chance to hear from Denali Coven members Casey Labow and MyAnna Buring, then Amazon Coven members Judi Shekoni and Tracey Heggins, Egyptian Coven members Rami Malek and Angela Sarayan, Irish vampires Patrick Brennan and Marlane Barnes. Last time we had our first Romanian vampire, Noel Fisher and now we have the other Romanian, Stefan, as played by Guri Weinberg. Read more below:
Did you do a lot of that character building before hand with Noel Fisher or did you build on your own and tell him “Hey this is what I came up with?”
Guri: I don’t want to speak for Noel, but I will speak for myself, I did it by myself at first. Noel and I met briefly in wardrobe fitting in La, and then in October we had to go to Baton Rogue to camera, lighting tests, makeup tests, you know with Bill Condon, with everyone else. And so what happened was we had a meeting regarding our character. He wanted to hear what our ideas were and he wanted to let us know what his ideas were. And out of that meeting, really all three of us talked about what we wanted. We flushed it out and that’s how we came to be on the same page.
We saw a still with you guys sitting around the campfire and it looks like they are looking at you and Noel as Vladimir, will we get to see some of that backstory looked upon? Like his war story that he’s talking about at the campfire?
Guri: I don’t know how much I am allowed to reveal, but I’m just gonna put it more on the wide scope where we all talked about our experiences. You are not going to be able to pull it out of me.
How much did you have to give Mackenzie in the swear jar. You are the one that kinda started it with her. How much did you have to give her?
Guri: Well I was lucky enough in the spirit that I didn’t have as much money as Rob and Kristen did, so she let me get away with it. But I was the one that told her to start a swear jar cause I felt that I was not a big help. She’s like a ninja, the way she comes up you don’t hear her. So at first you think it’s just us adults and then Mackenzie is there looking at you with that really disappointed look.
Did you get a chance to talk to Stephenie Meyer about the history or the background of your character at all?
Guri: Stephenie and I never talked about that. Stephenie and I when we were hanging out and talking, we talked and joked about everything else. The cool thing about Stephenie is that she trusted the actors and Bill Condon to do our jobs. And our jobs as professionals is to come up with the characters, understand she wrote and bring it to life.

Rian Johnson's film was made with the help of Chinese funding in Shanghai and satisfies country's appetite for action
Artistes can be notoriously reluctant to compromise their creative vision at the behest of the Man. Not so director Rian Johnson. He agreed to transplant the plot of his latest sci-fi blockbuster to another continent – from Paris to Shanghai – in order to gain lucrative Chinese funding.
The switch paid off: this weekend Looper became the first new Hollywood film to make more money in its opening weekend in China than the Us, provisional figures suggest.
"I'm thrilled the movie did so well in China. I don't think any of us expected those kind of numbers. It's fascinating to watch that market emerge and crazy to suddenly be part of the story," Johnson said.

Feng Xiaogang, the mainland Chinese director responsible for such epics as Aftershock and Assembly, as well as the blockbusting romantic drama If You Are The One and its sequel, seems determined not to be outdone by fellow countryman Zhang Yimou, by casting not one but two big name Hollywood stars in his upcoming wartime drama. Zhang brought The Dark Knight star Christian Bale to China for last year's The Flowers Of War, which at the time smashed box office records to become the most successful Chinese language film at the domestic box office. Feng's new film, Back To 1942 - depicting the horrific drought and famine that swept Henan Province during the Sino-Japanese War - features turns from two Academy Award winners: Adrien Brody and Tim...

Directors' group to investigate after Cannes film festival snubs women for Palme d'Or prize
The woman behind the hugely successful new BBC drama Parade's End is leading a campaign to give female directors a better deal in television.
Susanna White, whose adaptation of Ford Madox Ford's four-volume novel is winning widespread acclaim, is a member of Directors UK, a group representing British film and television directors, which has set up an all-women working party to examine the difficulties experienced by aspiring female directors. The move is partly a response to the fact that no women were entered for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes film festival.
White told the Observer that she had only broken into the top ranks of directors with extreme difficulty. "I think my journey has been a very, very, slow one."
Welcoming the new focus, she said: "I'm very keen for this to happen.

The general rule is: if something exists, Hollywood will make a movie out of it. No matter how uncinematic your novel is, no matter how non-narrative your property, the suits in Hollywood will find some kernel of a story and fling around $200 million until they have enough CGI things going boom to guarantee an opening weekend. This is the modus operandi of Hollywood, going back to the first silent films. Movies are constantly pulling from outside media for material to be adapted, referenced or blatantly rip-offed. And over the years, the movies have managed to wrestle numerous bizarre concepts onto the screen against all logic and reason.
They didn’t just film Lolita, they filmed Lolita Twice.
So it would seem that there’s really nothing that Hollywood can’t bring to screen, especially with the advent and widespread use of CGI.
So why can’t anyone make a good video game movie?...

While the newly released Spec Ops: The Line may not be perfect, it has received a lot of positive feedback from reviewers (myself included) for some of the risks it took and how well they paid off. The game pushes a lot of boundaries for the shooter genre, as well as video games in general.
This past week the game has had me thinking about the future of video games and I think some of the industries biggest future shifts in design focus can be seen in this game. So without further ado, here is a list of the four things that Spec Ops does that I think are the future of gaming.

A romantic comedy that seeks to reinforce the love team between singer-turned-actress Sarah Geronimo and Big Brother housemate-turned-matinee idol Gerald Anderson, Raz de la Torre's Won't Last a Day Without You does not stray far from the established story map and intention of a merchandized movie. It is feel-good, fun, funny, and extremely charming, like most of what Star Cinema has been mindlessly producing the past several years. The film is undoubtedly a product of formula, and quite surprisingly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. De la Torre is not exactly a newcomer. He wrote Cathy Garcia-Molina's A Very Special Love (2008) and co-wrote with other writers Garcia-Molina's You are the One (2006) and You Got Me (2007), two romances set in...

Chinese blockbuster Aftershock rolls out tomorrow on Region 1 DVD and will also be available via various Video On Demand platforms. Directed by Feng Xiaogang, who attracted international attention with A World Without Thieves before moving onto stolid historical dramas The Banquet and Assembly (and then romantic comedy If You Are the One), Aftershock features a terrifying recreation of the devastating 1976 earthquake in Tangshan that killed a quarter of a million people. It's made personal when a truck driver and his wife, who have snuck out to make love in the back of his truck, must watch with sickening agony as the apartment building in which they live collapses, burying their two young children under tons of rubble. The film goes on from...

1911 may be filled with lavish battle sequences and scenes involving masses of extras in picture perfect period garb, but the most breathtaking thing about Jackie Chan's 100th film is how indifferent it is to international audiences. The Chinese blockbuster hasn't needed or necessarily even sought out multinational success of late -- if homegrown hits from the last few years like earthquake disaster drama Aftershock and romantic comedy If You Are The One and its sequel (all three of which happen to share the same director, Feng Xiaogang) don't sound familiar, that's because they've gotten nominal American releases or none at all. For U.S. markets, foreign still equals arthouse, and films that fall outside of that equation often confound studios and audiences who aren't sure which niche subtitled mainstream fare should fall into.

“A Beautiful Life” is the latest outing from “Infernal Affairs” helmer Andrew Lau, and sees rather a change of pace for the Hong Kong director after his recent Donnie Yen vehicle “Legend of the Fist: the Return of Chen Zhen”. This time around he swaps martial arts and explosive action for realistic romantic drama, headlined by stars Shu Qi (“If You Are the One”) and Liu Ye (“Lan Yu”) as a tortured couple struggling to find love in the face of suffering. The interesting supporting cast includes former Olympic diver Tian Liang (also in “The Fantastic Water Babies”), Andrew Lin (“Beginning of the Great Revival” and upcoming actress Feng Danying, and despite being a Mainland production, the film also features the one and only Anthony Wong. The plot follows Shi Qi as Li Peiru, an estate agent who relocates to Beijing from Hong Kong, hoping to make money to support her family back home.

Eric Braeden calls the Daytime Emmys a "farce"
"Under no circumstances would I have been there," Braeden told TV Guide Magazine. "I think it's a joke. It's a farce. And it has been that way for a lot of years. They make it more ridiculous every year. I don't watch it because they [pre-]nominate from within each show now — some genius came up with that nonsense a few years ago — and it has turned the system into a popularity contest. I'm very glad Heather Tom won. And Bradley Bell. They are decent people in this business. And, of course, Maria Bell, who has done a very good job. But I don't think about the Emmys. You are the one who brought it up. I just ignore it and so do two or three other people at Y&R."

John Barrowman has spoken out about being an openly gay actor. Is it bad manners to invite your ex to your nuptials?
Reese Witherspoon is going to the chapel and going to get married…for a second time. But when the Water For Elephants weds agent Jim Toth in Ojai, Calif. March 26, one very important person won’t be present: ex-husband (and baby daddy) Ryan Phillippe. Should Reese have invited Ryan, or is sending an invitation indicating she’s officially moved on improper etiquette?
Although we can’t possibly know what goes on behind closed doors, to the naked eye, Reese and Ryan have a completely civil relationship. Although they’ve been divorced for four years, they were married for eight and have two children together, Ava and Deacon. One would think they could play nicely.
Except, they aren’t. When the Southern belle ties the knot for a second time this weekend, her ex won’t be present…because she didn’t invite him!

Whats that sound? Oh, just the collective Brittana fandom screaming for the head of Glee creator Ryan Murphy. News broke earlier this week that not only was Murphy continuing with the Brittany and Artie storyline, he now plans to put Santana and Sam together. First Bartie and now Samtana? Oh, hell no.
Murphy told Entertainment Weekly that he was breaking up the shows resident blonde-on-blonde couple Sam and Quinn. Why? I got bored. They were too perfect. He got bored? Not because it makes a good story or it makes sense for the characters or it makes the show better, but because he was bored? Good God, I hope he never gets hungry or the show could become a musical version of Lord of the Flies with people calling for the Gleeks to slit the weakest singers throat.
So then what was Murphys rationale for putting Sam and Santana together?...

Jonathan Franzen's family epic, a new collection from Seamus Heaney, Philip Larkin's love letters, a memoir centred on tiny Japanese sculptures ... which books most excited our writers this year?
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
In Red Dust Road (Picador) Jackie Kay writes lucidly and honestly about being the adopted black daughter of white parents, about searching for her white birth mother and Nigerian birth father, and about the many layers of identity. She has a rare ability to portray sentiment with absolutely no sentimentality. Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns (Random House) is a fresh and wonderful history of African-American migration. Chang-rae Lee's The Surrendered (Little, Brown) is a grave, beautiful novel about people who experienced the Korean war and the war's legacy. And David Remnick's The Bridge (Picador) is a thorough and well-written biography of Barack Obama. The many Americans who believe invented biographical details about Obama would do well to read it.

Am I the only one who sees the irony in the fact that it took a Sesame Street Muppet music video, created by a middle-aged white man with an adopted east African daughter, to stir up excitement over the acceptance of oneself within the black community, and the rejection of societal expectations and limited standards of beauty?
Really, that video clip has been passed around so much, usually followed by joyous comments, I’m sure every person in the world with access to a computer and the Internet has probably seen it! It’s practically a phenomenon! Some called it “revolutionary!” Really? Who knew? Where have some of you folks been all these years?

Don’t get me wrong, it certainly is a cute video, and I certainly can’t argue with the message!

Karl Urban is one of those cool actors who seems to get all of the cool jobs. From demon hunting in Doom to going where no one has gone before, he's one of the most well liked, and respected actors in the business. He's also an enormous nerd with a light saber collection. In this interview for Red, Karl talks about his character, punching Bruce Willis in the face, shooting guns, his work on “Priest” and more Star Trek sequels as Red week wraps up here at Latinoreview. When you got on this project, who was attached when you first signed on? Urban: When I was attached, it was Bruce, Mlp, Morgan…who else? Helen, Ernie Borgnine, and I think Malkovich came on just after myself. So when you first heard about the cast, were you immediately like, “Yeah, this sounds real good”? Urban: Yeah. I mean it is extraordinary.
