If John Hughes’ The Breakfast Club remains the quintessential ‘80s Brat Pack movie, what ranks as a close second? If we’re talking headcount, Joel Shcumacher’s critically panned commercial hit St. Elmo’s Fire (which might be getting a sequel) tops them all. The movie follows a tight-knit group of seven Georgetown post-graduates navigating young adulthood and helped define the “Brat Pack” as a play on the fraternal friendship forged by Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack in the ‘50s and ‘60s. In addition to advancing Schumacher’s directorial career, St. Elmo’s Fire partially launched the careers of stars Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, and Mare Winningham, most of whom would be associated with the Brat Pack for the next 40 years. The subject is documented in the new Hulu documentary, Brats, written and directed by McCarthy in a tender and touching snapshot of...

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos often discuss their children on their show, Live with Kelly and Mark.
If Kelly’s recent revelations are any indication, their children may not like that much attention from their famous parents.
Mark and Kelly have three grown children, Michael, Lola, and Joaquin Consuelos, who have moved out of the family home.
Since Kelly and Mark entered their “empty-nester” years, everyone, including The View’s Sunny Hostin, has been giving parenting advice.
However, something Kelly shared in a recent interview shows that not everything is going great for Kelly and her kids.
Kelly revealed that sometimes, her kids block her on their social media accounts.
Kelly Ripa wishes her kids would let her TikTok with them like Lisa Rinna’s kids do
Kelly and Mark offer advice or post little snippets of conversation on their kid’s Instagram posts, but it comes with a price.

The Brat Pack may be getting back together.
Demi Moore, currently generating Oscar buzz for her daring turn in “The Substance,” revealed that discussions are underway with Sony, the studio behind “St. Elmo’s Fire,” to make a sequel to the seminal 1985 film.
“The update is definitely, conversations are happening,” Moore said in an interview at the Toronto Film Festival. “[The] studio has been really behind [and] driving this. As far as I know, everyone seems to be up for it, which I think would be amazing.”
The original movie explored the lives of a group of recent college grads as the navigated that difficult early period of adulthood, one filled with relationship troubles and career anxiety. It also helped elevate the profiles of Moore and fellow cast-mates like Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham, Judd Nelson and Andrew McCarthy. “I’m warning you: She loves to dominate a teddy bear,” Demi Moore says as her teacup Chihuahua, Pilaf, toddles into the room. Moore, perched on a kitchen stool in her Los Angeles home, watches her dog with a sly smile. “You’re going to see some humping.”
Pilaf has had a busy year — she was featured in Vogue, and seen in the front rows of Paris Fashion Week — so bringing her to the Cannes Film Festival in May was a risk: Would the pint-size bundle of cuteness upstage her owner at the premiere of her blood-drenched horror film “The Substance”? Perhaps Moore knew the role was more beastly than her little pet could ever be.
“I didn’t know how the movie was going to go,” Moore admits as Pilaf, now in the family room, ravages her stuffed animal in a patch of sunlight. “It’s so out of the box.

Gen X are a funny lot. Generally acknowledged to be made up of folks born between 1965 and 1980. This means Gen Xers were teenagers between the ’80s and the late ’90s. Crucially this also means it’s a generation that grew up without any meaningful internet and no mobile phones, who were used to relying on cinema trips to watch trailers, Blockbuster Video for our weekend viewing and highlighting the TV guide at Christmas.
Streaming services, of course, did not exist so movies we watched at the cinema, recorded off the telly and even potentially owned on VHS (if you were the Queen) became very precious in a way that something you caught on Netflix while you were looking at your phone are not. Every generation has movies that are iconic to them – here’s to the ones that shaped today’s 40-somethings+.

Rob Lowe has confirmed that talks are happening for a sequel to Joel Schumacher’s iconic 1985 Brat Pack film, St Elmo’s Fire.
Joel Schumacher made many films over the course of his career, but 1985’s St Elmo’s Fire, which Schumacher also wrote with Carl Kurlander, holds a special place for many. Made at the height of the teen movie boom spearheaded by John Hughes, the film starred an ensemble that came to be known as The Brat Pack – Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andie MacDowell and Mare Winningham.
The film focuses on a group of graduates from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C, following their journey as they begin to adjust to post-university life and the responsibilities of adulthood. The theme song, St Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion) by John Parr became a 1980s classic, inextricably intertwined with the film in the same...

A feature film sequel to the seminal 1985 Brat Pack movie “St. Elmo’s Fire” is in early development, Rob Lowe confirmed in a recent interview. Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, talked to “Entertainment Tonight” about their Netflix comedy series “Unstable,” and the actor spoke about the possibility of rebooting “St. Elmo’s Fire” as a Sony film.
“We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” Lowe said about a potential sequel. He said the release of the “Brats” documentary earlier this summer from fellow Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy has “only added to the excitement around it.”
“But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages,” he said. “So we will see.”

Closely following the release of Andrew McCarthy’s documentary / filmed therapy session Brats, which reveals the impact the publication of the article that dubbed some of the young actors of the ’80s “the Brat Pack” had on McCarthy’s life and career (despite the article specifying that McCarthy was not a member of the Brat Pack), comes the news that McCarthy has a role in the sci-fi thriller Orion, which has just wrapped production in New York. Two 80s teen dramas, The Breakfast Club and St Elmo’s Fire, made overnight stars of a band of young actors including Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore and Rob Lowe – and Andrew McCarthy, whose new documentary looks back on those years
Depending on your age, Andrew McCarthy’s Brats will either be a cosy nostalgia trip or a window into another era of celebrity. As someone who was two years old at their zenith, I’ve only ever known the Brat Pack as a past buzzword: a gaggle of then-young American actors who became a collective cultural phenomenon before just as quickly dispersing into a very different array of career fortunes. To look back on that now, as McCarthy’s documentary does, is to learn more about 80s-era media and publicity machinery than anything particularly crucial about American cinema.

Emilio Estevez’s storied Hollywood career was nearly cut short before it even began, but thanks to the impulsive bravery of a lifelong friend, he was saved from a perilous situation. As an extra on the set of Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now, starring his father Martin Sheen, Estevez befriended a young Lawrence Fishburne. During a break in the Philippines, the two took a leisurely boat ride down a nearby river. As the boat drifted too close to the bank, Estevez offered to get out and push it back to the center. But as soon as he stepped out, he began sinking into the river muck like quicksand. Without hesitation, Fishburne extended his hand and pulled Estevez back into the boat, saving his life. All that dancing with death for his extra work to be cut from the final film.

Andrew McCarthy’s new Hulu documentary Brats has drawn enough interest for Sony to revisit one of the defining Brat Pack movies. According to Deadline, the studio is “exploring the possibility” of a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel.
Making the film would reportedly “hinge” on reuniting the original cast, featuring McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham.
Deadline emphasizes the potential sequel is in the “very early going” and doesn’t even have a script yet.
Co-written and directed by the late Joel Schumacher, St. Elmo’s Fire was released in 1985 and centered around a group of recent Georgetown University graduates as they struggle with the responsibilities of adulthood. It was a surprise hit, grossing $37.8 million on a $10 million budget.

Is the Brat Pack coming back? According to Deadline, Sony wants to rekindle the flame for a St Elmo’s Fire sequel if primary cast members are willing to return. While Sony is ready with wallet in hand to strike a deal, the proposed project depends on the participation of Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham.
The coming-of-age romance drama focuses on a group of friends fresh out of college and looking to start their lives as adults. Xennials connected with St. Elmo’s Fire significantly, especially in the face of an ever-changing world and the pressure to carry the generational torch for Generation X. In addition to being one of Joel Schumacher’s cinematic gems, St. Elmo’s Fire boasts a legendary soundtrack with artists like John Parr, Billy Squire, David Foster, Fee Waybill, Jon Anderson, Vikki Moss, and Airplay contributing one banger after another.

Back in 1985, Emilio Estevez and Andrew McCarthy shared the screen in the Joel Schumacher-directed coming-of-age film St. Elmo’s Fire, which was a box office hit that’s still remembered fondly to this day, even though the critical response wasn’t very positive. In the build-up to the release of that film, Estevez and McCarthy were set to co-star in another project, called Young Men with Unlimited Capital… but unfortunately, eighteen days before the release of St. Elmo’s Fire, New York Magazine published an article by David Blum in which Blum dubbed several of the hottest young actors of the day the Brat Pack. The actors mentioned in that article were shocked and offended by the Brat Pack label – so much that Estevez refused to do Young Men with Unlimited Capital with McCarthy, killing the project. Thirty-nine years later, the story of Young Men with Unlimited Capital has still never made it to the screen.

Editor’s Note: Journalist David Blum might have forever coined The Brat Pack era, but it was Carl Kurlander who provided the reason the infamous New York magazine article got written. St. Elmo’s Fire was a script Kurlander wrote with director Joel Schumacher, inspired by events in his life. Now an academic, Kurlander has written several guest columns for Deadline including a 35th anniversary remembrance of St. Elmo’s Fire. Why is he tapping again into those memories? He just watched Brats, the Hulu documentary that premiered at Tribeca Festival, directed by and starring Andrew McCarthy. He was part of the St. Elmo’s Fire ensemble that felt maligned by Blum’s article published the week before the film was released and became a surprise hit.
Here, Kurlander supplies some great dish — did you know Demi Moore’s drug demons almost forced Joel Schumacher to replace her with the young singer Madonna?...

For viewers of a certain age — or, perhaps more likely at this point, most ages — the term “Brat Pack” evokes nostalgia at its fondest. Movies like “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink” remain rites of passage for teenagers coming of age nearly 40 years later, and few would argue that the 1980s didn’t represent a high-water mark for teen movies. For actual members of that coterie of actors, it’s a little more complicated.
That’s especially true of Andrew McCarthy, who remains so conflicted about the term coined by David Blum in his June 10, 1985 cover story for New York that he made a documentary about it (after earlier publishing a memoir entitled “Brat”). A core Brat Packer whose filmography is headlined by the likes of “Pretty in Pink” and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” McCarthy has more recently stepped behind the camera and directed episodes of “Orange Is the New Black” and “13 Reasons Why,...

What to make of Brats? On one hand, the documentary appears to be the result of one individual’s own unresolved issues. To describe it poorly, back in the eighties, one Andrew McCarthy got really miffed by an article written by David Bloom. After all these years, Andrew still seems to have it out for David, and he’s now out there to get the journalist. That said, Brats is extremely watchable from the opening minutes. It’s fantastically made, and it almost works in a more cinematic manner than a documentary. Of course, it is particularly appealing if you really have a thing for American pop culture of the eighties, more specifically the teen movies of that era. We’re going to do some introspection here before discussing the ending of Brats, where Andrew McCarthy and David Bloom finally come face-to-face.

Our top pick for a movie awards contender to stream this weekend is “I Saw the TV Glow,” writer-director Jane Schoenbrun’s and producer Emma Stone’s buzzy A24 horror drama.
The film stars Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine as Owen and Maddy, suburban teenagers who bond over their love of a TV show called “The Pink Opaque,” which follows psychic teenagers Isabel and Tara as they battle monsters. Eventually, it becomes clear that they are Isabel and Tara, which freaks Owen out. The film is a surrealistic trans allegory with unique visuals and an excellent contemporary indie rock soundtrack that cements Schoenbrun as a filmmaker to watch. The cast also includes Danielle Deadwyler, Conner O’Malley, and Fred Durst. “I Saw the TV Glow” will be a darkhorse Oscar contender and a likely Independent Spirit Award nominee. It’s available on VOD now.

As Claire said during her weekend detention, “I hate having to go along with everything my friends say.” Apparently taking a cue, Molly Ringwald – along with Judd Nelson – was one of the key members of the Brat Pack who sat out of being interviewed for Andrew McCarthy’s documentary Brats. So, where were they?
As McCarthy told Entertainment Tonight, both Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson may not have been feeling particularly bratty, at least not in the way he would have wanted. “I mean, they both are in the film in a sense that there’s a lot of clips and interviews and things. The Brat Pack is an ongoing relationship, you know what I mean? And some people are at different places in their lives to want to or not want to talk about it. I think that just informs it even more. I mean, that’s my takeaway from it.

May 1985 was a good moment to be a hot, young actor. You had filmmakers like John Hughes presenting the teen experience in a way that resonated with teen audiences. You had studios who were suddenly happy to make films that catered to this lucrative, 14-to-24 demographic, so work was steady. You had ensemble films like The Breakfast Club, which had just come out the previous February, that provided the perfect showcases for this abundance of under-30 talent. It was not a coincidence that one of the most hotly anticipated movies of the season,...

Everyone of a certain age has a core memory of the iconic “Brat Pack,” even those born after their heyday. But what about the group itself? On June 13, 2024, that is the question that Hulu’s “Brats” asks as actor and director Andrew McCarthy interviews fellow Brat Packers Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Jon Cryer, Timothy Hutton and Lea Thompson.
Centering on 1980s films starring the “Brat Pack” and their profound impact on the young stars’ lives, “Brats” is certified fresh with a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The term was notably coined by New York Magazine writer David Blum (it wasn’t a compliment), who was hoping to gain attention in the journalism world. And yes, he is confronted in the film. At times, watching Brats is like watching a high school reunion, if the high schoolers in question frequented the Sunset Strip in the 1980s and the theater teacher was John Hughes.

It’s often hard to pinpoint the precise origin of a cultural phenomenon. The opposite is true when it comes to Hollywood’s Brat Pack. The catchy moniker that came to define the ’80s cineplex can be traced to June 10, 1985, when New York Magazine published a cover story pegged to the release of “St. Elmo’s Fire.” The piece, written by David Blum, followed three of the film’s stars — Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe and Judd Nelson — over several nights of heavy boozing and douchey antics, like ogling Playmates, encouraging groupies and trash-talking their rivals. Blum dubbed the group of young movie stars the “Brat Pack,” a phrase still recognizable four decades later.

Andrew McCarthy, creator of the Hulu documentary Brats, has Molly Ringwald to thank for his breakout role in Pretty in Pink. Here’s how she pushed for McCarthy to get the signature role over another well-known actor.
Molly Ringwald campaigned for Andrew McCarthy to get a ‘Pretty in Pink’ role
Molly Ringwald had signed on to star in Pretty in Pink as Andie. The 1986 film was written specifically for her by John Hughes. Previously, Ringwald starred in Hughes’ films Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club.
However, while the the role of Andie’s love interest, Blaine, was originally set to be offered to Charlie Sheen, Ringwald campaigned hard for McCarthy to get the role. In June 1985, a young group of talented actors was ready to take the world by storm as the release of Joel Schumacher‘s “St. Elmo’s Fire” approached. Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, and Demi Moore had already done fine work in other films both together and apart, but “St. Elmo’s Fire” was the best showcase any of them had ever gotten, in an era when youth movies were better and more numerous than they had ever been before. Nothing stood in the way of their becoming the next generation of great American screen actors — except for a New York magazine writer named David Blum.

Actor Andrew McCarthy’s documentary looks at his time in 80s Hollywood and the pitfalls of living underneath a label
If you’ve ever affectionately referred to Andrew McCarthy and his acting cohort as “the Brat Pack”, just know that they hated that label, which was coined in an infamous and arguably dismissive New York Magazine cover story. That’s what his new documentary, Brats, lays out before turning into something else: an opportunity for McCarthy to catch up with the audience and embrace how the term Brat Pack embalmed them in a seismic and precious pop-cultural moment.
Brats is a personal journey, with camera in tow, for the actor who played the gentle but daft heartthrob opposite Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink and the forlorn one in the brattiest ensemble of them all, St Elmo’s Fire. Many young stars were rising in Hollywood during the 1980s. It was one of the most critical decades in movie production due to its switch from focusing on films directed at adults to tween and teen flicks.
The '80s was an excellent decade for young movie fans. However, some movie stars, including Rob Lowe, had less fun, especially after journalist David Blum labeled them "The Brat Pack" in 1985.
Here's how Rob Lowe went from being a Brat Packer to being a family man and changed how he was perceived in Hollywood.

Some movies and actors stick with you through the decades, leaving you with random moments of nostalgia that can occur at any time.
While the '80s have different levels of fame, perhaps the greatest gift it gave was The Brat Pack, a group of young, up-and-coming actors often seen on film together and occasionally off-screen.
What actors belong to the group varies by who you ask. Some people consider the members to be those listed by reporter David Blum in his now infamous 1985 article in the New York Magazine.
But 1980s Brat Pack fans have their own list of eight core members we grew up watching act together. It started with The Breakfast Club and then St. Elmo's Fire.
Now, they're on some of our favorite movies and series. But regardless of what they do, they're often still associated with belonging to the Brat Pack.
