The film was bankrolled by Memorial Films, co-owned by Albert Finney and Michael Medwin, who had recently enjoyed great success with Lindsay Anderson's If.... (1968) and were about to commence production on Gumshoe (1971).
Mike Leigh wasn't terribly enamored with the rigors of feature film making and would concentrate his efforts on stage and TV for some years to follow. His next feature film would be High Hopes (1988) some 17 years later.
A big fan of the film was progressive TV producer Tony Garnett who produced Mike Leigh's next effort, Hard Labour (1973).
