The kaiju must battle! Srs Cinema has revealed a short official trailer for War of the Ninja Monsters: Jaron vs Goura, a homemade kaiju movie from Japanese filmmaker Shinpei Hayashiya. It's set for a Blu-ray release this summer from Srs Cinema - available to pre-order already on their site now. Hayashiya has been making super low budget, modern monster battle movies for years, also of the Reigo / Raiga / Ohga series (Reigo vs. Yamato and Raiga: The Monster from the Deep Sea) before this. The ninja monsters Jaron and Goura appear in the city of Chichibu, and rival ninja clans manipulate the ninja beasts into a fierce battle. The cast and crew includes suit actros Mizuho Yoshida and Akihiko Ohashi, cinematographer / VFX / editor Masayuki Nagata, composer Yasuhiro Ueda, monster designer Shinji Nishikawa, suit and prop makers Naofumi Kanamori and Tomohiro Matsumoto, and many others. This looks fun! I suppose the clunky...

The human element is an important aspect of any monster feature, as it provides multiple perspectives, adds to the relatability factor, and makes the stakes feel real to the audience. Legendary’s Monsterverse has struggled with finding a compelling human character or story arc since the beginning, which is why almost every movie in the series has completely changed the cast. Most of the time, the narrative focus was either misplaced or simply detached from the creature storyline.
Earlier this year, Apple TV+’s series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters managed to crack the code by presenting a perfect balance between creature features and human elements through Lee Shaw and Keiko Miura’s story arc, which was seen as a positive sign for upcoming installments. However, with the latest entry in the franchise, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, director Adam Wingard has chosen to go in a different direction, putting...

Adam Wingard's new film "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" has, tonally speaking, strayed far from Gareth Edwards' 2014 MonsterVerse kickoff film "Godzilla." Edwards' film was somber and sad, featuring very little "fun" monster destruction. As the MonserVerse series has progressed, however, it has crept inexorably toward a sillier tone before striking it rich with Wingard's 2021 entry "Godzilla vs. Kong." That film featured a battle between the titular titans, but also a cameo from Mechagodzilla, a monstrous robot extrapolated from the skull of the dead King Ghidorah. "GvK" also featured a fleet of human-built UFOs and a magical portal that led into the Hollow Earth, an unusual underground realm ruled by monsters.
The Hollow Earth idea is straight out of Jules Verne, but the mayhem-forward approach to a Godzilla movie comes from several of Toho's films released in the 1970s. Indeed, many critics and pundits have been comparing "GxK" to the series' Shōwa era,...

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is looking mighty as it heads into its opening weekend, earning an impressive $10 million in Thursday previews.
The muscular results come despite the fact that the film suffered meh reviews — critics faulted the latest clash of the primordial titans for hectic pacing and overstuffed plotting. Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman, for instance, dismissed the film as “overly busy boilerplate” (though he liked the finale). And yet audiences don’t seem to care about the middling notices. “Godzilla x Kong: New Empire” scored the best preview results of any entry in Legendary’s Monsterverse series, just ahead of 2014’s “Godzilla,” which earned $9.3 million while kicking off this whole scaly saga.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment co-produced “New Empire,” which cost $135 million. It was initially expected to open to a sizable $50 million to $55 million and could bring in between $80 million to $85 million at the international box office.

Watching “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” I realized that the movie, a standard overly busy and mediocre blockbuster with a pretty awesome wow of a clash-of-the-titans climax, was demonstrating one of the essential principles of Hollywood movie culture today. Namely: All blockbuster movies are now connected!
Kong, living in the Hollow Earth, where most of the film is set, is supposedly the last of his kind, but he discovers a child ape who actually looks like an homage to the cuddly creature in the 1967 Japanese film “Son of Godzilla.” This kid gorilla leads Kong to a tribe of scraggly hostile apes who are living in a slave society presided over by the Skar King, an evil ape with blotchy red hair who’s as tall as Kong and wields a skeletal bone whip that looks like it was fashioned out of the spine of a sea serpent. Mothra Returns In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Back in 2019, Michael Dougherty wrote a Twitter post about Mothra’s return to the franchise. Mothra gave up her life to help Godzilla fight the three-headed dragon, Ghidorah, but the ending of the film showed an egg had been discovered in the Yuccan province.
“Mothra never really dies. She represents the eternal cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth. And she knows it.”

Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1933 mega-hit "King Kong" was a marvel of special effects. It employed stop-motion animation, outsize models, rear-projection, and novel composting methods to convince audiences that a giant ape was interacting with human co-stars. Compared to modern, ultra-slick CGI effects, the 1933 King Kong may not look as realistic, but the ape shimmers with life and personality beyond what many modern effects can accomplish. Kong is the most sympathetic character in the movie, as he was kidnapped from his home and exploited by would-be entertainment moguls. Using bi-planes to shoot Kong off the top of the Empire State Building wasn't a moment of triumph for a masterful humanity, but the tragic execution of an animal that doesn't understand what it was thrust into. Not bad for a film that's going to celebrate its 91st birthday in April of 2024.

This article contains major spoilers for "Godzilla Minus One."
First introduced in 1954, Godzilla has become one of the biggest cinematic figures of all time and one of Japan's biggest exports. For nearly 70 years, the character has continued to be reinvented and reimagined. New filmmakers have added their own little spins on the design of the monster, what he represents, and how he impacts the world at large. From an allegory of nuclear destruction to becoming a hero and a defender of the planet. Godzilla has really done it all, including being a destructor of bureaucracy. Now, with "Godzilla Minus One," the king of monsters is returning to his roots as divine punishment.
Indeed, one of Takashi Yamazaki's big achievements as a writer and director is making Godzilla terrifying again. While "Shin Godzilla" explored a monster representing natural disasters — a monster too big for dumb, bureaucratic governments to handle — "Godzilla Minus One...

What was your first experience watching Godzilla movies? Do you have a favorite?
Takashi Yamazaki: I first saw Godzilla on my TV set as a child, and it was in black-and-white back then. Because it was monochrome like that, Godzilla seemed even more scary. I was a very scared child, but I was drawn to it at the same time, so there was this dichotomy. I was a...

When I was a kid growing up in the Nineties, Godzilla reigned supreme. The king of the monsters was a schlock superstar, and as a disciple, I worshipped at an altar of VHS tapes. It was a good time at the height of Heisei era, with disasterpieces like Godzilla vs. Biollante hitting the American market, and my baby brain was none the wiser that I was mostly being spoon-fed decades-old dubs and reissues of Showa classics. I had a hero! One that fit in nicely alongside green-skinned contemporaries, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

From the hidden depths of the sea, to the farthest corners of the globe, legendary monsters lie in wait. These colossal and fabled creatures, broadly referred to as kaijū, remain dormant or lurk in the shadows until there is no mistaking their existence. During the course of their travels, they often menace civilizations or battle other beasts of a similar size. Their legacies are formidable and their powers are devastating.
Yet despite their sheer enormity and astonishing abilities, audiences today may find it difficult to imagine the likes of Godzilla being genuinely scary. Their destruction can be shocking, but the monsters themselves don’t always strike fear in mankind’s heart. Even so, there are those instances in the course of Japanese kaijū cinema — from Godzilla, Gamera, or otherwise — where viewers are genuinely unnerved by what they see on screen.

U.S. audiences tend to accept Toho's earlier Godzilla movies as being high camp, usually thanks to Gen-x's half-remembered airings of late-'60s kaiju flicks broadcast on Uhf TV channels back in the 1980s. While there are some absurd and terrible Godzilla films from the Showa era (1954-1975), and many of them contained surreal, kitschy plot elements like invading aliens, one might also find several movies -- "Gojira," "Destroy All Monsters" -- that focus on Japanese national pride, the role of destructive weapons in the world, and a barely-simmering resentment lingering after a massive attack on the country. If modern superhero movies sprung from the U.S. subconscious as a fantastical revenge/preventative measure against 9/11, so too did Godzilla spring fully formed from the trauma left behind by the U.S.' atomic bomb attacks.

Japan’s most iconic giant monster is set for a big screen return in Takashi Yamazaki’s upcoming film “Godzilla Minus One.” Until that day, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the long-lasting legacy of “Godzilla.” Originally conceived as a metaphor for the horrors of nuclear warfare, the kaiju has seen its fair share of unique variations. Yet, the beauty of why this character remains solidified in cinema history is for the ideas that come with its creation and existence, along with many unique interpretations. Like many movie series, the franchise’s quality frequently fluctuates, yet plenty of these movies are good, some even fantastic. Here is an exploration of the King of the Monsters’ finest hits throughout the years.

The most famous kaiju in the world is set to make his triumphant rerelease to the big screen in more ways than one. The resurgence of Godzilla has blown up almost as big as the monster itself. The U.S. retried our hand at the gargantuan creature with 2014’s Godzilla, which aimed for redemption from the 1998 name-only version. That reintroduction spawned a monster-verse with King Kong getting his own reboot and culminating in a rumble for the film Godzilla vs. Kong. Not only is there to be a spin-off series with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters featuring the “Gorilla-whale,” but this December sees a new era with the Toho film Godzilla Minus One.

The Land of Smiles is trampled by an amphibious monster in Lee Thongkham and Aqing Xu’s creature-feature The Lake. After a mysterious egg washes ashore, an unknown predator rises from the Mekong River and goes on a rampage. The massive stars of this Thai-Chinese co-production are an achievement in modern kaiju effects, and a few set pieces are engaging, however the film as a whole is weighed down by a nondescript story and a cast of dreary characters.
The Lake is a contemporary update of all those straightforward kaiju classics of yesteryear, such as Mothra and Gorgo. Here a larger than life monster’s offspring is also stolen by humans, driving the parent to take drastic measures. This includes the near decimation of a Thai village toward the film’s beginning. The mayhem born from this ferocious attack alone is elevated by animatronic and suitmation effects as well as forceful editing.

It has been a slow few weeks for the end of the summer moviegoing season after a string of big hits like "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" made 2022 feel pretty close to normal in the box office department. But Hollywood has decided to leave a (mostly) barren wasteland from now until mid-October, with few big films coming out to give movie lovers much of a reason to leave the house. That having been said, dear reader, I am here to tell you that lovers of Idris Elba, creature features, and movies that are charmingly straightforward have a very good reason to get off the couch -- and that reason is "Beast."
Universal Pictures released the film in mid-August to try and round out the summer with something original. Or, at the very least, something not based on a pre-existing piece of material or set within an established franchise.

Ten years after the success of “Godzilla”, it became more than evident that the popularity of the kaiju was nowhere near the end and had arguably only just begun. With the commercial acclaim of both “Mothra” and the ambitious “King Kong vs. Godzilla”, producer Toho would continue the franchise with now one more entry per year, staring with “Mothra vs. Godzilla”, which saw the giant reptile with the star of Ishiro Honda’s movie just a few years prior. While the feature also shows the technical advances when it came to shooting these kinds of movies, it also stayed true to the themes which Honda and co-author Takeo Murata had introduced in the first movie of the franchise, namely the battle of man vs. nature and the danger of nuclear technology, with the director’s skepticism seemingly have grown over the past decade if the story is any indicator.

Last week we had the pleasure of an invitation to the East Coast premiere of the anime rock opera Inu-Oh, which opens in theaters today. It's distributed by GKids, a company which has long championed non-Hollywood animation for US audiences who we all know can be stubbornly myopic about animation, viewing it as a genre rather than a medium capable of all kinds of genres and visual experiences. The screening was at Japan Society here in Manhattan. I bring this up primarily because I had somehow never been there and must highly recommend the venue which has monthly screenings of both anime films and acclaimed live action Japanese films, too. Seeing specialty films, which generally play to tiny arthouse crowds, in a beautiful respectful context to a large packed crowd is always a thrill.
And Inu-Oh deserves a big screen so don't wait until streaming if it hits a theater near you.

Ever since Godzilla vs. Kong hit the screens back in March 2021, fans of the epic MonsterVerse movies from Legendary Pictures have been eagerly awaiting news of what comes next. Studio executives have also teased plenty of options, given that the latest installment of the franchise was a huge commercial success, which makes it inevitable that plans for the future are already on the drawing board.
Legendary got the ball rolling when they launched the Godzilla reboot in 2014, introducing us to an alternate Earth timeline, featuring Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs), along with the Monarch organization investigating their existence. When Kong: Skull Island was released in 2017, the giant ape was reimagined to form part of a shared universe, featuring subtle teasers that at some point in the future, he would cross paths with Godzilla.

When Kong: Skull Island was released in 2017, the giant ape was reimagined to form part of a shared universe, featuring subtle teasers that at some point in the future, he would cross paths with Godzilla.

By the mid-1960s, Toho Studios had fully showcased the broad, international appeal of the kaiju film with numerous Godzilla and other stand-alone genre entries like Rodan, Varan the Unbelievable, and Mothra among numerous others that were scoring global success. Spurred on by this success, rival Daiei studios attempted their own kaiju cash-cow in Gamera: The Giant Monster which would soon become its own franchise after the studio attempted this new effort headed by veteran director Kimiyoshi Yasuda. Mixing together the kaiju scale of destruction with a jidaigeki story framework and setup, the first of the Daimajin trilogy is available in a spectacular boxset from Arrow Video

The following article contains Godzilla vs. Kong spoilers.
The future of the MonsterVerse is uncertain. If you had any doubt, just look at the lack of a post-credits scene in the latest installment, Godzilla vs. Kong. While Kong: Skull Island teased the coming storm of King Ghidorah and other kaiju, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters ended its actual credits sequence with the big ape waiting in the wings, there is a sense of closing out a chapter (if not the book) in the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
This is in large part because it is up in the air how Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures will proceed with Toho Co. Ltd., the creators and owners of Godzilla and his assorted monster friends. Under the previous contract, which concluded with this year’s monster mash-up, Toho was unable to produce any live-action Japanese Godzilla movies until after 2020, leaving room...

It’s another CineSavant review of a movie largely unavailable, especially the original Japanese version. This third Ishirô Honda / Eiji Tsuburaya outer space action epic is probably the best Toho science fiction feature ever, an Astral Collision tale in which the drama and characters are as compelling as the special effects. Nothing can stop a colossal planetoid heading toward Earth, but science comes to the rescue with the biggest construction job ever undertaken by mankind. The fine screenplay generates thrills, suspense and human warmth. It also takes place in the far, far future: 1980.

Eureka Entertainment’s November lineup was announced yeterday and will feature a classic Japanese monster movie that introduced us to one of the most unique creatures ever seen on film; and two influential sci-fi epics from one of Japan’s inimitable filmmakers.
Mothra (Limited Edition Box Set) (Blu-ray)
Synopsis
One of the most iconic Japanese kaiju, Mothra has appeared in over a dozen feature films. Presented here is her debut, a gloriously vibrant piece of filmmaking that forever changed how kaiju eiga would be produced in Japan.
Following reports of human life on Infant Island, the supposedly deserted site of atomic bomb tests, an international expedition to the heavily-radiated island discovers a native tribe and tiny twin female fairies called “Shobijin” who guard a sacred egg. The overzealous expedition leader kidnaps the Shobijin to exhibit in a Tokyo stage show but soon they summon their protector, hatching...

An extraordinary new Criterion Collection box set gathers the classic era of Godzilla movies together for the first time.
With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound, Godzilla burst onto Japanese movie screens in 1954 as a frightening, melancholy metaphor for the nuclear nightmare that descended upon Japan just nine years earlier at the close of World War II.
Released in the U.S. two years later as Godzilla, King of the Monsters (with additional footage starring American actor Raymond Burr), that debut was such a success that it launched what has become the longest running franchise in film history, spanning 35 films over the course of 65 years and creating a genre known as the kaiju eiga (monster movie).
The Toho films have been separated into four distinct eras, and now the Criterion Collection -- the elite showcase label for classic cinema -- has compiled all 15 films of the first,...

All Hail the Reptilian King! Just in time for the holidays, The Criterion Collection announced that their seminal and hugely-anticipated #1000 spine would be given to the King of the Monsters himself, the indelibly iconic Godzilla and the entire Showa era that his creator, Japanese auteur Ishirô Honda, was directly a part of. The incredible-looking set includes fifteen of his greatest adventures, from the 1954 harrowing debut in Godzilla where he was the ultimate allegory for nuclear annihilation that terrified the post-World War II audiences the world over to his fight with American’s own King of the Monsters in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963) to the introduction of his iconic indelible foes such as Radon, Mothra, and Ghidorah, and finally, Honda’s final turn behind the camera for Godzilla to face his toughest foe in Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975).

Godzilla: King of the Monsters might not have been a critical and commercial success on the same level as its 2014 predecessor, but the movie nonetheless delivered enough city-leveling destruction to send the fans home happy, with the latest entry in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse earning over $385 million at the box office, bringing the franchise’s total haul up to almost $1.5 billion with Godzilla vs. Kong scheduled to hit theaters next March.
Director Michael Dougherty is clearly a massive fan of the title character, and King of the Monsters is packed full of references to the extended Godzilla mythology, as well as heavily featuring classic Toho creations Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidora. However, the filmmaker admitted in a recent interview that he would have included more of the franchise’s rogues gallery if he could have afforded to.

“Game of Thrones” looks pretty unbeatable at the Emmys this year, but most of the readers we polled think there was a show that could have beaten it if only it had been eligible in this Emmy cycle: “Stranger Things,” which didn’t premiere until after the May 31 cutoff. Scroll down to see our complete poll results.
When I say “most readers,” though, it’s not the most by much. It was an extremely close race with 52% of readers saying “Stranger Things” season three would have won and the other 48% saying it would have been “Game of Thrones” anyway. “Thrones” certainly has the stronger track record, with three Best Drama Series victories to date and more Emmy wins overall than any other narrative series in history. However, “Thrones” was also criticized by critics and fans for its abrupt story and character development in its abbreviated final season.

Toho’s fabulous, kid-safe Kaiju spectacle about the super-moth from Infant Island might be a stealth Cold War fairy tale. Kids respond to the fanciful Shobijin fairy princesses, while adults (watching the Japanese version) might catch the authors’ message about national belligerence and the abuse of Third Worlders. Greedy ‘Rolisican’ opportunists pay the price of an ancient curse. For its expression of Nature’s justice, vigilante-style, Ishiro Honda’s music-filled show stands right up there with Gorgo — and the giant Moth is also the only Japanese Kaiju monster identified as female.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters may not have been the critical hit Warner Bros. was hoping for, but there’s no denying the film delivered on the spectacle. Watching the Big G team up with Mothra to take on Rodan and King Ghidorah made my inner ten-year-old self scream with joy and nearly made up for the movie’s weaker human-driven elements. If anything, we can all agree that the third outing in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse has successfully built anticipation for next year’s Godzilla vs. Kong, though now it seems we’ll have to wait just a bit longer to watch them fight.
According to Warner Bros. boss Toby Emmerich, in a new interview with Deadline, the king-sized crossover event might need a few extra months to marinate:

Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” took first place at the box office this weekend, grossing $49 million domestically and a little lower than initial projections which pegged the film to open between $55-65 million.
In comparison, the 2014 “Godzilla” grossed $93.1 million in its opening weekend, and “Kong: Skull Island” ended up with a $61 million opening in March 2017. Overseas, the $170 million-budgeted movie took in $130 million — which is again under the $140 million international gross for the 2014 film.
“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” is directed by Michael Dougherty and finds the legendary kaiju monster facing off against his greatest titanic foes, including Mothra, Rodan and the three-headed dragon King Ghidorah. Its score of Rotten Tomatoes is 40% and its CinemaScore if B+.

Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” is stomping its way to an estimated $48 million debut from 4,108 North American locations.
The follow-up to 2014’s “Godzilla” took in $19.6 million on Friday. The latest projection is slightly below earlier tracking estimates, which had placed it in the $50 million to $55 million range. In any case, it’s likely to debut far behind its predecessor, which took in $93 million in its opening weekend and wound up with $200 million domestically and $529 million from overseas territories. However, “King of the Monsters” will come somewhat closer to “Kong: Skull Island,” the second installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. That film took in $61 million in its 2017 debut.

Chicago – Everyone’s favorite city-flattening radioactive reptile, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” gets stuck in a mire of third-rate-tv-network domestic melodrama in this disappointing follow up to the thrilling 2014 reboot. But before I roar about the many ways this misbegotten miscreant messes up, let’s throw a few pebbles of praise.

The design of Godzilla continues to be exactly right. This is where special effects have been used to enhance, but not obliterate the design that made the big green guy so popular in the first place. And the CGI design on Mothra, Rodon, and King Ghidorah is impressive as well. Rodon in particular is born out of a mexican volcano, and looks pretty awesome, and King Ghidorah (the three headed monster) is usually pretty cool. All the creatures look like they’ve been hitting the gym in their time away from the screen, but they look and sound...

All the creatures look like they’ve been hitting the gym in their time away from the screen, but they look and sound...

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” the follow-up to 2014’s “Godzilla” and 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island” in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse, stomped into the Thursday box office and earned an impressive $6.3 million.
The latest “Godzilla” film will be locked into an epic battle with another behemoth as Disney’s “Aladdin” enters into its second weekend and hopes to hang onto the top spot at the box office. It also opens against Universal and Blumhouse’s horror film “Ma” starring Octavia Spencer and “Rocketman,” Paramount’s music biopic on the life of Elton John.
“King of the Monsters” is projected for an opening weekend between $55-65 million. It currently has a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The previous “Godzilla” film earned $9.3 million at the Thursday box office in the summer of 2014 and opened to $93.1 million. “King of the Monsters” however is tracking closer to “Kong: Skull Island,” which earned $3.7 million in...

Who are the real monsters? The humans or the creatures that terrorize them. It’s a classic monster movie theme that, dare I say, can’t really be approached in a new way after over 70 yrs of creature features. Sure, it’s a trope of the genre that has effectively won over my heart time and time again. And yet, it feels a little forced and hollow when it takes a backseat to explosions, destruction, and roars from gigantic titans.
In Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, the crypto-zoological agency, Monarch, is under fire as the government wants to take over their monster-hunting activities. Meanwhile, they have been able to locate several god-sized monsters, including Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed Ghidorah. Monarch’s Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) has developed a device known as the “Orca” which allows communication with the creatures by layering the sounds of species to create sonic-waves…...

Godzilla: King of the Monsters smashes its way into theaters today and fans will finally get to witness the return of Godzilla as he engages in battle with Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. I already had a chance to see it and it was an extremely fun movie. Sure, it had its problems, but it was a lot of fun watch these giant Titans fight.
We’ve got a new featurette for you to watch today called “Meet The Titans” and it focuses on bringing the Titans to life for this movie. As far as the creatures go, the film nailed them in the best possible way. They were my favorite part of the film.
The featurette includes interviews with members of the cast and director Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat), who clearly has a love for these monsters and you can tell when you see the movie. There’s...
