It is impossible to think of disaster films and not think of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as Dr. Jo Harding and Bill Harding in ‘Twister’. Jan de Bont's film was the second-highest-grossing film of 1996 and had a very significant impact on popular culture, becoming a fan favorite and influencing storm chasers all over. “Twisters” is sweeping audiences off their couches and into the theaters.
The standalone follow-up to “Twister” (1996) grossed over $80 million in its first weekend and was the third highest-grossing film of 2024.
Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos lead the disaster film as a ragtag group of storm chasers. Jones plays Kate Carter, a once disaster-seeker turned to corporate weather pro, while Powell plays Tyler Owens, a viral “tornado wrangler.” The two team up with Javi, a longtime friend of Kate’s played by Anthony Ramos, to tackle the biggest twister Oklahoma’s seen in generations.
The cast also features some newcomers but (spoiler alert!) no cameo from Helen Hunt. For the complete “Twisters” cast and character guide, keep reading.

Lee Isaac Chung decided to cut Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones' kissing scene from 'Twisters'.The 45-year-old director is at the helm of the new thriller - which focuses on the relationship between ameteorologist (Edgar Jones) and a tornado wrangler (Powell) - and revealed that even though he filmed two versions of the romantic scene, he ultimately chose to release the one without the physical romance. He told Collider: "I filmed both versions, to be honest. I had a kiss version, and I had a non-kiss version. I have to say, I like both versions and there were many arguments made to have them kiss. My 13-year-old niece is very mad at me that I didn't have them kiss because she saw that version and she loved that. But it feels to me that Kate's journey and the reward at the end for her should not be a kiss,...

“Twisters” blasted off at the domestic box office with a huge $80.5 million, but one of the biggest talking points from film on social media is for something that didn’t actually make it into the movie. Set footage depicting stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell filming a climactic scene in which their characters share a passionate kiss went viral in the days leading up to the “Twisters” release, but fans were soon left devastated by the kiss not making it into the theatrical cut.
“I think it’s a Spielberg note, wasn’t it?” Edgar-Jones told Collider about the cut kiss, revealing that executive producer Steven Spielberg opted for the kiss not to be shown in the movie. “I think it stops the film feeling too clichéd, actually. I think there’s something really wonderful about it feeling like there’s a continuation. This isn’t the end of their story.

“Twisters” may only be Brandon Perea’s second summer blockbuster after also co-starring in Jordan Peele’s 2022 sci-fi horror film “Nope,” but it would seem like he’s getting the hang of it pretty quickly. Taking on the supporting role of Boone, right-hand man to Glen Powell’s tornado wrangler Tyler Owens, Perea delivers a full-throttle, often comedic performance that echoes Philip Seymour Hoffman’s work in the original “Twister” as storm-chaser and food-lover Dusty. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter for a recent interview, Perea shared how he immediately recognized Boone as the Dusty character of the sequel, but didn’t realize he’d be the one to take it on.
“When I first got the script, I didn’t know which character I was actually reading for. I just got the script to see if I was into it. And then we had the roles mixed up,” Perea said.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Twisters”]
There’s nothing quite like a big, loud, summer blockbuster. The kind of film that shakes your seat, blasts your ears, and tugs at your heartstrings with excessive, yet entertaining force. Many films this summer have tried to service this need, including “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” but “Twisters” may finally be the one to exceed financial expectations, if not at least meet them. Critics have already praised its direction and VFX, plus this Glen Powell summer would not be complete without another hit at the box office for the handsome human golden retriever. However, as much as “Twisters” delivers on its promise to blow you away, the one thing holding it back from being a masterpiece on the level of “Top Gun: Maverick” — other than not having Tom Cruise, of course — is its relation to its predecessor, the 1996 disaster film from “Speed” director Jan de Bont and quite singular,...

Glen Powell honors the memory of Bill Paxton as Twisters carves a new path of destruction in cinemas
As Twisters churns and thrashes its way into theaters, one of the film’s stars, Glen Powell, is paying tribute to the late actor Bill Paxton, who helped make the first film a classic. Paxton starred alongside Helen Hunt in Jan de Bont’s 1996 action blockbuster as Bill Harding, an accomplished storm chaser on the verge of changing the way extreme weather patterns. Despite not getting along on set, Paxton and Hunt’s chemistry in Twister is electric, and the film would only be nearly as memorable with Paxton’s energy, bravery, and entertaining approach to the material. In a post on social media, Powell remembered the late Paxton, whom he worked with on the 2013 film Red Wing.
“As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton,” Powell shared on Twitter. “A great friend...

"Twisters" may have plenty to prove as the sequel to a beloved '90s blockbuster, but the cast and crew behind the film certainly earned their tornado season bona fides while shooting the blustery project on location in Oklahoma. A new Vanity Fair interview with director Lee Isaac Chung reveals that the film's shoot was battered with multiple storms that forced stars and crew members to seek shelter, and even one that wrecked a set that was already due to be swept away by tornadoes on screen.
Chung, who grew up in Arkansas and says he endured tornadoes while living in a trailer home as a kid, made the conscious choice to film in the heart of the dangerous area known as Tornado Alley. In an impressively meta move, the movie's crew employed both a full-time meteorologist and an emergency planner, both of whom worked to make sure everyone working on the project was safe.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and starring Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (Fresh), Twisters is one of the most highly anticipated blockbusters of the summer. Its 1996 predecessor Twister has gained cult status over the years, renowned for its excellent special effects, entertaining action and terrific performances from the likes of Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Many would argue that this story has been begging for a sequel for years, with Twisters being a long overdue sequel almost 30 years later. Twisters follow Kate Carter (Edgar Jones) as storm season intensifies, and she collides with reckless social-media superstar Tyler Owens (Powell). The pair and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in a fight for their lives. Adding in every ingredient needed to make a successful blockbuster, Twisters is a triumph. The performances shine, the visuals are jaw-dropping,...

As such, it's easier (if not simple) to understand the actions of those people who do take their lives in their own hands, because they do so for multiple reasons: one, for the sheer visceral thrill of doing so, but two, because they know, as we all do, that taking a risk is the best way to ensure actual results.

Two years ago, Brandon Perea delivered a breakout big-screen performance in Jordan Peele’s Nope, and now he’s back in Universal’s latest July event film, Twisters. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Perea plays Boone, who’s nearly unrecognizable from his Nope character, Angel Torres. He is the right hand to Glen Powell’s Tyler Owens, as their team of “tornado wranglers” are the ragtag group of storm chasers that are most similar to Bill (Bill Paxton) and Jo Harding’s (Helen Hunt) motley crew in Jan de Bont’s now-franchise starter, Twister (1996).
Perea’s character is also the closest analogue to Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Dusty from the original film, and while the latter may have had more of a scientific background than Boone’s role as videographer, they’re both devoted friends, tie-dye enthusiasts and the life of the party. Twisters isn't an announced remake of Jan de Bont's 1996 cow-chucker Twister, but it kinda is? Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) honors the beloved storm-chasing picture by borrowing plot milestones for his blustery "continuation," yet it's hardly a copycat. Twisters is an exhilarating summer blockbuster with plenty of giddyup, trading Van Halen needle drops for buckin' Wild West rambunctiousness. Chung's breathtaking intimacy as a storyteller never sacrifices the adrenalized thrills found in life-threatening tornado hunts, swirling together rapturous disaster sequences with adventurous mavericks who yee-haw their way into our hearts. It's hands-down one of the 2024's champion titles so far, meant to be experienced on a gigantic theater screen.
The film's setups are familiar, but new characters hardly make for a stale Twister regurgitation. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, the New York City meteorologist called back into action five years after tragedy strikes in the field. Kate's former colleague...

Before Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, there were Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, who starred in the original high-octane thriller Twister (1996) as storm chasers.
Romantic tension similar, but also different, to that between the main characters in Twisters unfolded in the original film. The new installment also nods to the reboot in several ways. The conflict within the two films is also similar. Twisters looks to touch down to a $50 million start at the box office opening weekend.
With Universal’s sequel directed by Lee Isaac Chung about to hit theaters, some may be wondering where to watch the original natural disaster film.
Where Can I Watch ‘Twister’? Is It Streaming?
Twister, which came out in 1996, is available to stream on Max as well as with the Hulu and Max bundle. It is also available to rent on Prime Video, Apple TV+ and more.

Jan de Bont’s Twister remains one of the most beloved blockbusters of the 1990s, at least for the millennials who grew up with it. That’s chiefly due to its still-awesome special effects, fashioned at a time when filmmakers were delighting in experimenting with the newfound possibilities of CGI. Each storm was meticulously crafted and impressively tactile, making good on the film’s tagline, “It’ll blow you away.” So why, in an even more advanced cinematic landscape where any phenomenon can be easily created with the click of a computer mouse, does Lee Isaac Chung’s long-gap sequel, Twisters, barely kick up dust?
Twisters lacks any real explicit narrative connection to the original beyond featuring the storm-tracking device nicknamed Dorothy. Our protagonists are approximations of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s characters from Twister, modified just slightly to give off a hint of variation. Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones...

If you were forced to pick a '90s blockbuster that lent itself to the legacy-sequel craze, the original "Twister" would probably be near the bottom of the list, and "Minari" director Lee Isaac Chung would be the very last name you'd pick to bring such a follow-up to life. Boy, what a difference nearly 30 years makes. Back then, there was practically a cottage industry built around productions featuring an A-list headliner surrounded by a strong stable of character actors, a journeyman filmmaker bringing a sturdy sense of direction, and a straightforward enough hook to put butts in seats. A movie like that merely needed a savvy marketing push and the promise of big-screen spectacle to set it on the right track ... and thrill-seeking audiences could be relied upon to take care of the rest and lead it to box-office glory, thank you very much.

Charlize Theron hosted the fourth annual block party for her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project on Saturday, where she also shared her reaction to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Furiosa, which was released in late May, served as a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, and saw Anya Taylor-Joy portraying the early life of warrior Imperator Furiosa, whom Theron played in Fury Road.
Theron confirmed she had seen the new movie and told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s amazing, it’s a beautiful film.” When asked if she had talked to Taylor-Joy at all throughout the process or since its release, Theron explained, “No, we’ve really been trying to connect. It’s been one of those — we can actually make a comedy out of it. We keep running into each other and in places when we don’t have time to really talk to each other, so we’re constantly like,...

Tom Cruise attended the London premiere of Twisters earlier this week, and it’s safe to say he had an absolute ball. Anthony Ramos, who stars in Twisters alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, told People that Cruise was “losing his mind” during the screening.
“Glen was sitting behind me, my brother was next to me, and Tom was behind my brother. Tom just kept hitting me the whole entire movie,” Ramo said. “After the third time I turned back around, like, ‘Yo, Tom Cruise is bugging out right now!’ He keeps hitting me.” In a normal movie-watching situation, that would be very annoying, but are you really going to tell Tom Cruise to stop hitting you because he’s so excited about your movie?
Ramos continued, “He keeps hitting me because he’s excited about different moments, and he’s laughing. He’s just laughing out loud the whole entire film.

Glen Powell wasn’t supposed to be showing off his body in “Twisters,” but then came the rain, as director Lee Isaac Chung decided at the last minute that Powell should be seen in the natural disaster movie in a wet white T-shirt.
“That was Isaac’s idea,” Powell told me Thursday at the film’s Los Angeles premiere. “I did have a jacket in that scene. He said, ‘I think we’re going to toss the jacket out.’ I was like, ‘Cool.’ And he goes, ‘Also, there’s going to be a rain machine.’ I was like, ‘Ok.’ But then I was like, ‘Wait a minute.’”
The hunky moment in the movie — a sequel to the classic tornado disaster action thriller “Twister” — was met with applause and cheers during the premiere screening.

After breaking out for her roles in Normal People, Where the Crawdads Sing and Fresh, Daisy Edgar-Jones is taking on her first big summer blockbuster with Twisters — and her first foray into the stunt world, though seemingly not her last.
The film, not technically connected to 1996’s Twister but serving as a standalone sequel, stars Edgar-Jones as a one-time tornado chaser and meteorologist who is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to test a new tracking system. There she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (played by Glen Powell), a social media star who posts his storm-chasing adventures, as they encounter multiple storm systems converging over the state.
“It was so stunt heavy and I’d never done really proper stunts, so I was so curious to see how they were going to achieve a lot of the action sequences but I’m a bit addicted now, I’ve got the bug,...

With the upcoming release of Twisters, it’s hard not to think of the late Bill Paxton, who starred in the original movie alongside Helen Hunt. Although the new movie isn’t expected to feature any of the original actors, it will feature a tribute to Paxton in the form of his son, James.
James Paxton, now 30, will make a cameo appearance in Twisters as a tribute to his father. He was just a year old when the original movie was shot, but his first time seeing the movie arrived a decade later when his father called him in to see it on TV. “Dad was making dinner and he called me in, like, ‘Hey, look, what’s on. It’s your old man,’” Paxton told Variety.

Audiences appear to be blown away by Twisters as social media buzzes with the first reactions to the high-velocity action film. The standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister makes landfall in theaters on July 19, one week before Marvel‘s Deadpool & Wolverine puts a hit out on the summer box office. Thankfully, many reactions to Twisters are glowingly positive, with audience members praising Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones’s on-screen chemistry, brilliant direction by Lee Isaac Chung, and thrilling special effects.
People across Twitter say Twisters feels like a “good old fashioned Summer blockbuster,” with adrenaline-fueled action, a predictable yet effective story, and compelling protagonists who make the wild ride well worth the price of admission. Several of those who have seen the film predict it will “blow the theatrical roof off,” giving cinephiles another reason to enjoy their local theaters’ air conditioning and salty concessions.

For a generation, Jan de Bont’s 1996 rip-roaring tornado rager Twister was a definitive movie-going experience. A white-knuckle spectacle that practically made you feel the wind whipping through your hair, it also, through its pack of rogue, impassioned meteorologists, made weather cool.
Nearly 30 years later, Twisters (like Aliens, a pluralised sequel) embarks on a similar mission, following largely in its predecessor’s tyre tracks but with a few fresh tune-ups. Weather still handily exists, but bolstered by global warming has led to an angry succession of tornadoes wreaking havoc across Oklahoma. The sequel’s opening set-piece shows one in all its glory and violence and, with all the stakes and suspense of a horror film, sets the film off on a harrowing note that’s powerful enough to derail the lives of knowledge-hungry pals Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Javi (Anthony Ramos).

Twisters whipped up a frenzy in London on Monday night as the Lee Isaac Chung disaster epic touched down at Cineworld Leicester Square for its European premiere. Before any tornadoes hit the screen, audience members got some early thrills courtesy of a very special guest in the crowd: Tom Cruise.
The Hollywood superstar attended the screening in support of his Top Gun: Maverick pals, including Glen Powell, who stars in the Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. release opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones, Harry Hadden-Paton and Anthony Ramos. There’s another Top Gun connection: That film’s director, Joseph Kosinski, is credited with story by credit on Twisters, which was written by Mark L. Smith based on characters created by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. Cruise has also long been close to Steven Spielberg, who executive produced the new Twisters as well as the original 1996 film.

At the Hollywood Climate Summit on Wednesday, Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung, executive producer Ashley Jay Sandberg and actor Brandon Perea were joined by some real-life tornado experts to discuss how science and climate change were woven into the upcoming film.
The new movie serves as an update to the 1996 project of the same name, following storm chasers who find themselves in a fight for their lives as multiple tornadoes converge over central Oklahoma. Technical adviser Kevin Kelleher, who works for the National Severe Storms Laboratory, was involved in both the original and new movie, and admits that from a scientific standpoint there were a lot of inaccuracies in the 1996 version.

The forecast is looking better than good for Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters.
The summer tentpole — featuring a high-wattage cast that includes Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos — is tracking to open to $55 million over the July 19-21 weekend in North America, according to market leader The National Research Group. Universal, which is handling the film domestically, is being more conservative in suggesting $40 million to $45 million considering that tracking has been off as of late in many cases. Some believe Twisters could even do more than $55 million, such as research firm The Quorom, which is predicting $54 million to $61 million.
Warner Bros. International has overseas duties.
Twisters opens 28 years after filmmaker Jan de Bont’s Twister, starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, whipped up a Category 5 storm at the box office. Universal and Chung have been clear in saying that the new film isn’t a sequel, but a “current-day chapter” of the first film.

Hype for this summer’s Twisters may not exactly be hitting at record speeds, but we can probably expect some dumb action – and sometimes that’s just what you want in a summer movie. But before you write this sequel off, Twisters star Glen Powell wants you to know that it has one of the most incredible action sequences ever captured.

Haven’t had enough Glen Powell yet? Well don’t worry, the “Anyone but You” and “Hit Man” star will be back on the big screen soon enough with “Minari” director Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters.” Coming to theaters July 19, “Twisters” is a sequel to the 1996 disaster film and box office bonanza “Twister,” but features a new, young cast headed by Powell and including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Brandon Perea, and Anthony Ramos. To tease the upcoming blockbuster, all four actors sat down with Fandango to discuss the making of the film and the level of authenticity sought through practical effects.

With great action comes great effort. Glen Powell teased “one of the most incredible action sequences of all time” in this summer’s Twisters, coming July 19.
The actor recounted his experience shooting the storm sequence in a Fandango’s Big Ticket interview, which he says “all happens in a oner.” The appearance was pegged to the film’s tickets going on sale.
“We shot that in December, with a rain machine,” Powell says in the clip. “One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged across a pool by a wire. I think it was the most physical thing that I’ve ever done.”
Daisy Edgar-Jones, Powell’s Twisters co-star, agrees “completely,” she says.
“You’re talking about humans getting sucked up into a tornado,” Powell continues. “But you’re recreating what it’s like to be getting hit by debris and all that stuff. So you’re...

Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters sequel will receive its Italian premiere at this year’s Taormina Film Festival, which takes place July 12 to July 19 in southern Italy.
Twisters will screen at the festival’s historic Teatro Antico amphitheater. This year’s event will mark the festival’s 70th edition. The film will be released in Italian theatres on July 17 via Warner Bros. Pictures and will hit North American cinemas on July 19 via Universal Pictures.
“I am grateful to Warner Bros. for this wonderful gift, which confirms one of our programming guidelines: relying on diversity of styles,” said Marco Müller, artistic director of the Taormina Film Festival. “With Twisters, Lee Isaac Chung has gone from his Academy Award-winning drama Minari to deliver a spectacular cinematic event speaking to an even wider audience.”
Twisters is billed as “a sweeping current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster.” The film stars Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser, and Glen Powell who plays Tyler Owens, a charming and reckless social media superstar. The synopsis reads: Two opposing forces, come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.
The cast also features Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos (In The Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), Golden Globe awardee Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy), and Sasha Lane (American Honey), along with David Corenswet (the upcoming Superman), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Nik Dodani (Atypical).
Producers are Frank Marshall (the Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones franchises) and Patrick Crowley (the Jurassic Park and Bourne franchises). The film was written by Mark L. Smith, screenwriter of The Revenant, from a story by Joseph Kosinski, based on characters created by Michael Crichton & Anne-Marie Martin.
The Taormina Film Festival is promoted and organised by the Fondazione Taormina Arte Sicilia with the support of the Assessorato del Turismo dello Sport e dello Spettacolo della Regione Siciliana of the Sicilia Film Commission, the Municipality of Taormina and the Ministry of Culture–General Directorate for Cinema and Audiovisual (MiC).
