The Rig is a brand new supernatural thriller series, directed by the legendary John Strickland, and is making its way to Prime Video on January 6th. While the show may be entrenched in mystery, and dark themes, our two interviews with leading cast-members were quite the opposite, as we had a lot of fun chatting about this brilliant new series with Martin Compston and Emily Hampshire, as well as Iain Glen and Rochenda Sandall.
Of course we speak about the themes of the show, and shooting in Scotland, as well as working with Strickland and the other members of this talented ensemble. But we also speak about cups of tea and battered chocolate bars. We also speak about the challenges and joys for actors in being a part of successful series, as of course in Compston and Sandall we have two members of the Line of Duty collective, while Hampshire...

Considering that most of us watch TV to relax, it’s remarkable how many shows leave us adrenalin-flooded, with hearts beating like hummingbird wings. It’s TV characters’ fault; those guys never know when to stop. They’re always attempting a hostile takeover of the family firm, escaping a race of murderous cyborgs or trying to dismantle a totalitarian regime. It’s exhilarating but exhausting behaviour. And the better a drama is, the more invested we are in its characters, so the more we care when they put their life on the line. That means more fingernails chewed, more faces clawed in horror, and more nervous foot-tapping while we should, by rights, be melted into our sofas like… all the chocolate melted into my sofa.

BBC cop drama Line of Duty has scored its highest ever opening ratings – was the Jed Mercurio-created series helped by the Bodyguard effect?
The fifth season launched with 7.8M overnight viewers on BBC One, scoring a 38% share. This trumped the 5M for its fourth season launch, which was its first since moving from BBC Two, as well as the 7.5M viewers that tuned in for last year’s finale. It hit a peak of 8M during its hour-long return.
The ratings mean that the World Productions drama currently sits as the highest rated programme across all channels in 2019 so far. It was also a hit for 16-34 viewers, making it the second highest rated show in that demo following an Fa Cup soccer game in January.

BBC terror thriller Bodyguard has become the biggest new drama launch in the UK in a decade. The first episode of the drama, created by Line of Duty’s Jed Mercurio, consolidated with 10.4 million viewers and a 40.9% share, after launching with 6.7M overnight viewers last Sunday night.
The show saw an increase of 3.6M viewers watching via catch-up and on-demand and is the highest launch figure for a new drama on BBC One since at least 2002. Some 3M people have watched the drama on BBC iPlayer.
The ratings should help distributor ITV Studios Global Entertainment secure a U.S. deal for the show.

Jed Mercurio, creator of BBC breakout drama Bodyguard, is eyeing a second season of the terror thriller after stellar opening ratings and an endorsement from former Home Secretary Amber Rudd.
The six-part drama, which stars Game Of Thrones alum Richard Madden and Line Of Duty‘s Keeley Hawes, opened with 6.7M (35%) overnight viewers for its first episode and remained steady at 6.4M (30%) for its second episode.
The World Productions thriller is set in and around the corridors of power and tells the story of a heroic but volatile war veteran assigned to protect the Home Secretary whose politics run contrary to his own.
Rudd, writing in the Sunday Times, said Hawes portrayal of Home Secretary was “fierce” and “unapologetic”. “She has the hard side you need to smash a glass ceiling, but is able to turn on a personable, credible approach where necessary,” she added.
Mercurio responded by thanking Rudd...

Major spoilers ahead as we speak to Line Of Duty creator, writer and director Jed Mercurio about Roz Huntley, Acc Hilton and more…
If I were ever to find myself alone in a room with a dead body I’d created in self-defence and pondering my next move, “plead guilty to manslaughter,” Jed Mercurio tells me. “For the minimum three years sentence. If you take the risk of fighting a murder plea with self-defence and you fail, then you will be convicted of murder and that is a mandatory life sentence.” Getting off with self-defence is really, really hard, says Mercurio, really hard. “I did the research.”

With Peter Capaldi otherwise engaged, The Musketeers welcomes Marc Warren as its series two villain. How does the show fare on its return?
This review contains spoilers.
2.1 Keep Your Friends Close
So The Musketeers return for another 10 episode run, albeit switched from a Sunday to an unusual Friday night slot (which I can’t help feeling is something of a dump from the Beeb as the Sunday slot seemed much more appropriate and higher profile). The first season saw some highs, some lows and too many middles but was sufficiently entertaining to deserve another go-around. Indeed, as I sat down to watch Keep Your Friends Close it was certainly with a sense of optimism, as unencumbered with having to perform the necessary back stories the second season should zip along with stories focused on the team, action and the humour. At least that’s the theory.

Versatile producer and director who made Prime Suspect an enduring success
Paul Marcus, who has died of cancer aged 56, was best known for his award-winning work as producer of the television series Prime Suspect. However, most of his career was devoted to directing, for theatre and cinema, as well as for TV.
The first series of the police drama Prime Suspect, written by Lynda La Plante and following Dci Jane Tennison (played by Helen Mirren) as she led her first major murder investigation, was aired by Granada TV in 1991, to wide acclaim. Marcus was asked by Granada to take over as producer on the second series. He bravely invited an unknown director, John Strickland, to oversee the drama, but his choice proved justified, with Prime Suspect 2 matching the success of the first series and receiving an International Emmy award as well as Bafta recognition.
