After “Mulk” (2018), “Article 15” (2019), “Thappad” (2020) and “Anek” (2022), filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is back with “Bheed,” another hard-hitting film that shines a light on the fabric of Indian society.
The film is set during the 2020 Indian pandemic lockdown and tells the poignant story of migrant workers stranded without basic necessities while trying to go home to their villages. Shot in black and white, it is deliberately evocative of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan when people were uprooted from their homes in the largest migration in history.
“When the pandemic hit, people were seeking help on Twitter. Everybody had different strengths so we were helping each other and, and I really got sucked into it. And that was the time when I felt that this film had to be made, this period of time has to be recorded, and I didn’t want it to be just a Coronavirus film,...

Anubhav Sinha’s upcoming social drama “Bheed,” starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar, is a rarity in contemporary Indian cinema in that it is made completely in black and white.
Images from the film, which is set during the 2020 Indian pandemic lockdown and tells the hard-hitting story of migrant workers stranded without basic necessities while trying to go home to their villages, are deliberately evocative of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan and people were uprooted from their homes in the largest migration in history.
Sinha said: ” ‘Bheed’ is a story of the most perilous times which changed everything for humanity. The key objective of shooting the film in black and white was to showcase how the visuals of the social disparity during India’s lockdown were strikingly similar to what people went through during the 1947 India partition. There’s not much to do in the seedy little police station in suburban Mumbai for rival cops Kay Kay Menon and Arbaaz Khan, other than break the bones of pathetic pick pockets and small time hoodlums. So, while Kay Kay kicks and pummels sundry addicts and alcoholics, Arbaaz sniggers and stuffs himself with light snacks. Until the Stoneman arrives. A hapless man is bludgeoned to death in his sleep by a stone and has his blood is splattered all around him. Kay Kay feels a kind of meaningfulness in his crappy cop-life and readies himself for some real excitement. However, the problem is that he has been suspended from the force for his brutal exploits. The stories of Saadat Hassan Manto are not pretty evening-time entertainment to be ingested with a glass of ‘read’ wine. They are gut-wrenching nauseating, stomach-churning renditions of a time when India was split into two.
So were human skulls and while many fled to the new country nextdoor, a lot of legs were forcibly parted by marauders masquerading as political vigilantes. Yes, rape is not pretty and when a young gangraped girl responds to the simple request ‘Khol de’ by reflexively loosening her salwaar we know the times that this film takes us back to must never be visited again.
This cinematic visit to those troubled times serves up a telling warning.

Road, Movie
The comma spliced title of the film kept me intrigued for quite some time. The nitpicker in me hit the books to find a reason as to why the words 'road' and 'movie' are separated by a comma? Here's what I found out: It has to do with a train. Train of thought. "You're looking good, let's go have some coffee" doesn't necessarily mean "you're looking good so let's go and have some coffee". The readers are free to make their own connections between the two fragments/ideas, separated by the comma, in the first example. While in the other the connection is made more than apparent. This kind of construction of sentences - paratactic syntax - is usually employed by poets to juxtapose different kinds of imagery to fire up the readers' imagination. Cutting short this aside in linguistics, I think it's a brilliant and a promising title,...
