“Daredevil Musthafa”, winner of and 2024 Winner Filmfare Award – Kannada Film Industry, has an interesting story behind its production. When its director, Shashank Soghal, decided to shoot a film based on the homonymous short story by Poornachandra Tejaswi, he couldn't find producers. Instead, he turned to crowdfunding to raise the money, and with the help of more than 100 fans of the same writer, in the end he managed to shoot it. The result was quite successful as the film had a great theater run and is currently screening on Prime.

I noticed something curious. Director Siddharth Anand of the film ‘Fighter’ says that his film flopped because 90% of Indian moviegoers have never sat in an airplane! I was amazed, amused, but, most of all, I was worried. Worried, because this is how the maker of a Rs 400-crore film thinks!
My mind instantly went back to Shakti Samanta’s ‘An Evening In Paris’ (1967), where a bikini-clad Sharmila Tagore is sea skiing as Shammi Kapoor courts her hanging from a helicopter. After learning what Malhotra had said to explain why his film had failed, I wondered how many people hang from a helicopter to court a woman! I don’t know anybody who has done such a thing and still, ‘An Evening In Paris’ was a major hit! I can cite hundreds of such examples.
Of course, the audience must first identify with the subject of a film. The other factor...

After his debut feature “Titli” bowed at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard strand in 2014, Kanu Behl is back on the Croisette with “Agra,” which has its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight.
” ‘Agra’ grasps the reality of patriarchy in India through the prism of male sexual misery,” is how the festival describes the film. It follows Guru, a young single call center employee who still lives with his parents. Consumed by frustration, he plunges into a fever bordering on insanity, between pathetic fantasies, dating apps and hysterical self-harm. The film also explores the role property can play in a young man’s emancipation.
After the theatrical release of “Titli” in India and France in 2015, Behl began thinking about what to do next. “I realized that I had felt a certain sexual repression or an inability to express myself sexually in my adolescent years,” Behl told Variety. The filmmaker realized that he...

ReviewThe film, based on litterateur and humanist Poornachandra Tejaswi’s short story, is a wholesome, precious watch in today’s world filled with division and hate.Sometime in 1973, when the world in retrospect seems way better than it was today, Poornachandra Tejaswi wrote a short story about a Muslim boy entering a Hindu-only government college in a place called Abachur. He’s seen as an alien, someone whose culture stands out, in a college filled with Hindus. The village is pretty and everything looks picture perfect, but there’s a deep undercurrent of resentment between the Hindus and Muslims there after a Hindu girl and a Muslim boy eloped. How will Musthafa (a fabulous Shishir Baikady) fit in? The teacher struggles to pronounce his name — Jamal Abdullah Mustafa Hussain — and director Shashank Soghal builds up every trope of Muslims that we have been fed over the years before breaking each...

Aashiqui 2
Starring Aditya Roy Kapoor, Shradha Kapoor
Directed by Mohit Suri
Rating: *** ½
It’s no coincidence that this surprisingly moving film is inspired by Frank Pierson’s 1976 drama A Star Is Born. And I deliberately mention the funky psychedelic 1976 version and not the older 1954 version of the same story. In spirit and in the way the two principal actors perform their parts of two soul-mates and singers torn asunder by their allegiance to the same competitive spirit of showmanship, Aashiqui 2 is robustly reminiscent of the Kris Kristofferson-Barbra Streisand film where he discovers a co-singer who steals his heart and also his career.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee made his lyrical melodious Abhimaan on the same theme. It was easy for Hrishida to portray Jaya Bhaduri as a better artiste than Amitabh Bachchan quite simply because she sang in Lata Mangeshkar’s voices. In Aashiqui 2 the two protagonists are...

Mumbai, April 30: Twenty-three years after Mahesh Bhatt's Aashiqui became a blockbuster, its leading man Rahul Roy is wondering why he hasn't been invited to see "Aashiqui 2".
"I have not seen the film. Maybe because I am no longer that close to Mahesh Bhatt saab. During the last 12 to 13 years we just drifted apart. If I had seen it, I'd be better positioned to comment on it," said Rahul, who had made his debut with "Aashiqui" in 1990.
"As things stand, when I'm asked about it I can only conjecture. As far as I can see, there is very little connection between my 'Aashiqui' and this film except that shot of the lovers' faces.

Mumbai, April 26: Actor Rahul Roy, who has been away from celluloid for some years now, will soon be seen in an untitled film under his banner Rahul Roy Productions. For this, the actor has chopped off his long locks.
Ever since the actor made his debut with "Aashiqui" in 1990, he kept his tresses slightly long. The film's success not only made Rahul a star overnight, but his hairstyle became a rage among the youth.
It is only now that he has opted for a change.
"If after 23 years, I am changing my look, there would definitely be a reason behind it. There is a character which is fascinating me. I am wanting to do that.
