America, as we know, is a rabidly divided nation. But when it comes to dramatising the cultural/ideological chasm, the blockbuster era of Hollywood comedy was way ahead of the curve. Town versus gown. The slobs versus the squares. The by-the-book straight-arrow cop versus his reckless, crazy-ass, trash-the-rules partner. Or, just two years ago in Daddy’s Home, Will Ferrell as the agonisingly polite and “evolved” milquetoast stepfather Brad Whitaker versus Mark Wahlberg as the proudly macho and non-coddling divorced delinquent Dusty Mayron, who set out to prove to Brad that “real” dads don’t cry.
The battle played out in predictably pat, occasionally funny ways. And though that should mean, in theory, that there isn’t much ground left for the sequel to cover, Daddy’s Home 2, a boisterously formulaic and designed-by-committee holiday comedy, enjoys a certain leg up in timing. It arrives at a moment when the crackling...

There’s a scene at the end of Daddy’s Home 2, Sean Anders’ sequel to his mediocre 2015 hit, which has all the hallmarks of a classic Christmas movie climax: the characters, previously at odds, coming together for a joyous singalong. Except the song they choose is Feed the World. The Band Aid anthem – once a call for the Western world to mobilise to relieve the vast suffering in Africa – is malignly appropriated as a campy joke, hollered against a backdrop of a shamelessly product-placed cinema chain handing out free snacks to gorging Americans. It’s not even the worst scene in the film, but it does epitomise a so-called comedy which is thoughtless on multiple levels, and frequently tasteless.

Despite going up some pretty stiff competition, Daddy’s Home made an impressive start to its box office tenure when it was released on Christmas Day. Its opening weekend haul of $43.2 million was substantially more than projected, and it only came in second to the box office juggernaut that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But does this success mean that a Daddy’s Home 2 is on the way? Well, if it is actually greenlit, co-writer and director Sean Anders admitted that they’d have to go back to the drawing board with their ideas because it certainly wasn’t planned. I had the chance to speak to Daddy’s Home writers Sean Anders, Brian Burns, and John Morris earlier this month, and they revealed that a particular scene at the end of the comedy wasn’t meant to allude to a ...

Just a few years ago, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg surprised audiences with their rapturous chemistry, when they teamed up in the hilarious comedy "The Other Guys." Leaving fans like myself wanting more, it was just a matter of time before we would see them pair up in yet another comedy. That opportunity presented itself, when the script for 'Daddy's Home" came Will's way. The characters in the film had Will and Mark written all over them, which is precisely why Will thought Mark would be perfect for the other "dad" part in the film. It was also apparent at the recent NYC press conference for the film, that the two have a genuine, trusting friendship off-screen, which resonates onscreen and affirms why Mark follow's Will's guidance in being open and taking risks in comedy. Not that he needs much help, as Mark appears to be quite natural and comfortable in a comedy setting.

It’s Step-Dad vs. Dad – and Will Ferrell vs. Mark Wahlberg – in this rollicking holiday season family comedy about a mild-mannered radio executive who must take on the ultimate “dad-versary” when his wife’s motorcycle-riding, freewheeling, secret operative ex breezes back into town. It’s just one proud papa meeting another – what could possibly go wrong? But what is supposed to be a first get-to-know-you meeting turns into all-out warfare as the two polar opposites attempt to out-dad each other, with hilarious and disastrous results.
The stakes keep rising – from puppies to ponies to Kobe – but can they both survive the rivalry? Step-dad Brad just wants to be there for his new family, but he has no idea just how much it’s going to take to win their hearts when Daddy’S Home.

Reteaming with his comedic confidante after their hilarious turn in Adam McKay’s 2010 action The Other Guys, Ferrell will be locking horns with his former ally for the new feature, which has released a new trailer today by way of Paramount Pictures and Red Granite Pictures.

Hit the deck! Rat-a-tat-tat!! These are the sounds of a cinema staple, the gangster genre. From the early silent days, “thugs with dirty mugs” were the source of many a “hit” at the box office, of course. Soon after the Brothers Warner began their studio, they quickly became the premiere producers of these “blood and thunder” morality plays, featuring a “murderers’ row” of movie icons headed by James Cagney, Edward G Robertson, and Humphrey Bogart. In the waning years of Hollywood’s Golden Age, these thrillers often merged with the biography genre with the stories of real-life 20’s and 30’s criminals like John Dillinger, Bonnie Parker, and Clyde Barrow, and, the big man himself, “Scarface” Al Capone. With the phenomenal success of The Godfather, these “public enemies” were back in vogue, continuing even to this day. Now the Warners are back in the true tale gangster biz, but they’re...

Telluride – For most moviegoers the new drama “Black Mass” will feel inherently familiar, and the reason is obvious. The story of notorious Boston crime lord Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) and the FBI agent who essentially protected him, John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), inspired Martin Scorsese’s 2007 Oscar-winning drama ‘The Departed.” The difference between the pictures is that “Mass” notably fleshes the story out with distinct historical detail that film lacked. Yet, with a number of high-profile crime thrillers set in Boston over the past eight years “Mass” has to rely on Johnny Depp’s inspired portrayal of Bulger and a strong ensemble to truly captivate. There are worse problems to have. Set mostly in the ‘70s and ‘80s, “Mass” starts off by attempting to frame Bulger’s rise to prominence through the plea bargained testimony of his notorious Irish-American Winter Hill gang, namely Kevin Weeks (Jesse Plemons) who went from...

★★★☆☆ After his portrayal of Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in Michael Mann's Public Enemies (2009), Johnny Depp returns to the criminal underworld with his take on James 'Whitey' Bulger in Scott Cooper's glossy, competent yet strangely unengaging Black Mass (2015). Adapted from the book by Dick Leher, Cooper's film tells the story of the South Boston criminal leader who, through his connections with the FBI, rose from a small time thug to an out and out king pin. The film begins with local boy Bulger up to nothing much but no good. It's 1975 and Bulger has been back from a stint in Alcatraz. He has a bar and hands out beatings as he controls petty crime on his own turf.

Daddy’s Home Trailer. Sean Anders and John Morris‘s Daddy’s Home (2015) movie trailer stars Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, Linda Cardellini, and Paul Scheer. Daddy’s Home‘s plot synopsis: “When a divorced guy’s ex-wife re-marries someone way more uptight, he re-enters her life and wreaks havoc.”

While Michael Bay was signed for the first three "Transformers" films, from that point on his involvement is on a 'per film basis'. With the fourth it seemed liked he wouldn't be returning, until a deal was closed that saw him do "Pain & Gain" before going onto "Transformers: Age of Extinction".
Though many are assuming that Bay will return for a fifth entry in the series, that is far from set in stone yet and Bay has several other projects in the works that he could jump to instead. Paramount said Wednesday that it will release the film directed by Sean Anders and John Morris on Christmas Day. Warner Bros. released the first trailer for the Johnny Depp crime thriller “Black Mass” on Thursday. Depp stars as real-life Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, who ruled the Boston underworld through fear and intimidation for years before going on the run to avoid an indictment. In the trailer, Bulger and three associates are sitting around a dinner table. Bulger asks one of the men, John Morris (David Harbour), what the recipe for his steak marinade is. Morris initially refuses, as the recipe is a family secret. After some gentle plying, though, Morris gives it up. See Photos: 42 Summer Movies on Our Radar:.

While Super Castlevania IV was a huge success, Konami didn’t just settle for Nintendo only releases. It seems strange to describe this as "much sillier than the original," considering that "the original" in this case is a film called "Hot Tub Time Machine," but I think it's safe to say that they hit the ground running with this film, with very little focus on genuine storytelling, and for the most part, that approach serves them well. In addition to being very silly, this film is profoundly dirty. Rob Corddry's character Lou is the apex predator of the modern movement of sociopathic comedy. There is a character type, personified in Larry David or the cast of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" or Ruxin on "The League," that is completely without conscience or humanity, and I'm intrigued by just how far some comedy is willing to push that archetype. It's tricky, because if you do it wrong, you create a character that is unbearable to watch. And...

“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. We are truly inspired and impressed by the work of our colleagues.”

Directors: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly; Screenwriters: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly, Sean Anders, Mike Cerrone, John Morris, Bennett Yellin; Starring: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Rob Riggle, Laurie Holden, Rachel Melvin; Running time: 109 mins; Certificate: 15
Perhaps it's no surprise that this should be the dumbest comedy to come out of Hollywood in years. That's the point, you might say. But there's dumb, and then there is depressingly dumb. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels were loveable idiots when they first played Lloyd and Harry in 1994, but now they're older, none the wiser and needlessly abrasive, which takes the fun out of their stupid antics.
It's as if the Farrelly brothers are overcompensating; sharpening the daggers just a tad too vigorously to reclaim their place on the cutting edge of comedy, and yet this still feels dated two decades after the first Dumb and Dumber had audiences doubled over - not sure whether to...

Hannibal Buress is joining the cast of Daddy's Home, the Paramount-Red Granite comedy starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Buress, a stand-up comedian, recently drew attention for his remarks about Bill Cosby's resurfaced rape allegations during a performance in October. Sean Anders and John Morris are directing the film, which centers on a mild-mannered easy-listening radio executive (Ferrell) looking to become the best stepdad possible to his wife's two children just as their freewheeling and freeloading real father (Wahlberg) arrives on the scene. Buress will play a sarcastic handyman who, due to circumstances orchestrated by Wahlberg’s character,

It only took 20 years for the Farrelly Brothers to come up with a true sequel to their 1994 hit, Dumb And Dumber, but as I say in my video review above, maybe they could have waited a while longer.
The film stars Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey as the dopey duo, this time trying to track down the long-lost daughter of one of them for a kidney transplant. From there, as they say, high-larity ensues.
Other notable cast members include Rob Riggle and Kathleen Turner, working from a script whose many credits include the Farrellys, Sean Anders, Mike Cerrone, John Morris and Bennett Yellin. The film is produced by the Farrellys, Riza Aziz, Joey McFarland, Charles B. Wessler and Bradley Thomas. Universal Pictures is distributing. The film hits U.S. theaters today.

"The Other Guys" co-stars Ferrell and Wahlberg are reuniting for what could be the funniest custody battle since "Kramer vs. Kramer." The duo, who first teamed for the 2010 comedy hit "Guys," are set to star in the upcoming comedy "Daddy's Home" for Paramount Pictures and Red Granite Pictures. Ferrell will play a mid-level radio executive desperate to win the affection of his two stepkids, and facing major competition from the kids' biological father (Wahlberg), who's equal parts free spirit and freeloader. "Home" is happening fast, and is aiming to start shooting before the end of the year. It will likely be released sometime in 2015. The script was originally written by Brian Burns ("Blue Bloods"), but was re-written by a team of comedy vets, including Sean Anders and John Morris ("Horrible Bosses 2"), "The Other Guys" co-writers Chris Henchy and Adam McKay, and Etan Cohen ("Tropic Thunder"). Anders ("Horrible Bosses 2") is also directing.

Manuel here to bring great news to fans of 90s TV shows and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. I know you’re out there!
Not to be outdone in this week’s “craziest Hollywood pitch ideas finally being developed” (coughTetriscough), Paramount has announced that it’s moving forward with its long-gestating Baywatch film adaptation with none other than Johnson himself, he of great box office power when paired with an established brand, in talks to star. May we hope this turns out to be more Charlie’s Angels than Bewitched? More Mission:Impossible than The A-Team? In true 21 Jump Street fashion, it seems they’re going for comedy, as they’ve hired Sean Anders and John Morris, of We are the Millers fame. If the film truly embraces its own kitsch appeal and zeroes in on 90s nostalgia, it might make for an interesting... no, I can't even finish that sentence.

WWE legend Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has confirmed that he’ll be starring in Paramount’s feature film adaptation of Baywatch. The 42 year old actor tweeted “This is my beach bitch!” Rumors are true… #Baywatch #RatedR #RedShortsBeHugginABrotha”.
The addition of Johnson to the Baywatch project is a sign that Paramount have big box office ambitions. The action hero star was one of Hollywood’s biggest draws for 2013 and has proved to be a commercial success. He’s also earned some critical plaudits, notably being one of the better parts in last year’s Pain & Gain.
The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Paramount have also “hired Justin Malen to rewrite and has attached the hot comedy writing team of Sean Anders and John Morris (We’re the Millers) to direct.”
It sounds like the film could be a lot of fun. The 80’s and 90’s generation will have fond memories of the Baywatch TV show,...

It's getting close to awards season, but it's safe to say that one film won't be worry about that much, and that's Dumb & Dumber To. It's been 20 years since we've seen Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) on the big screen, and this time they have another big road trip in store, as we've seen in the first trailer for the film. Now a TV spot has arrived, and while it's pretty much a condensed version of the trailer (with added laser light effects in one odd scene), we do get one more amusing joke showing how efficiently Harry and Lloyd take advantage of the public transportation system. Will we like this a lot? Maybe. Watch! Here's the first TV spot for Peter & Bobby Farrelly's Dumb & Dumber To from Universal: Dumb & Dumber To is directed by Peter & Bobby Farrelly (Dumb & Dumber, There's Something About Mary) and written by...

Given how inept they were at murder in the last film, do Nick, Kurt and Dale (Aka Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day) really think that the solution to their problems is still crime? Apparently so, because they’re trying out kidnapping in the Horrible Bosses sequel. Check out the new trailer…This time around, the boys are looking to leave behind their roles as cogs in the corporate machine and seize their own destinies by launching a business. Unfortunately for them, they run afoul of dodgy, scheming businessman Christoph Waltz, who screws them over and laughs all the way to the bank (via the golf course). But instead of cutting their losses, the chuckleheads consult Dean “Motherf*cker” Jones (Jamie Foxx) once more and decide to kidnap the swindler’s son (Chris Pine) for ransom. What they don’t realise is that he’s meaner than his father...

Joe Berlinger’s documentaries typically deal with glaring flaws in the American justice system, and his latest is no different. Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger follows the trial of one of the most brutal gangsters America has ever seen, James “Whitey” Bulger.
Just as it seems like Bulger will finally be brought to justice, accusations of multi-faceted corruption within our nation’s law enforcement and legal systems surface, and the FBI begins to look just as bad as the mob. Although it is never fully proven, it appears that the FBI may have had a hand in allowing Bulger to remain such a frightening crime figure for far too long a time.
It was a privilege being able to talk with Berlinger when he arrived at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, California last week to do some press for the film. During our exclusive interview,...

"The Other Guys" co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are in talks to reunite for the new comedy "Daddy's Home" at Paramount. Ferrell and Vince Vaughn were slated to star last year at a time when Etan Cohen was set to direct.
That version collapsed, but Wahlberg has now stepped in to replace Vaughn as a freeloading man who learns his ex-wife re-married an uptight radio executive (Will Ferrell). Said executive wants to be the best stepfather in the world, so when the real father returns to town it causes the two men to compete for the children's affection.
Sean Anders and John Morris are now in talks to direct from a screenplay by Brian Burns, Chris Henchy, Adam McKay and Etan Cohen. Ferrell, Adam McKay, Joseph Drake, Nathan Kahane, Matt Leonetti and Spencer Wong are producing.

Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are going to war. The "Other Guys" stars are close to re-teaming on "Daddy's Home," another comedy from Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions that will see the former playing a "mild-mannered radio executive" attempting to impress his new wife's two children - only for their "freeloading, freewheeling" biological father (Wahlberg) to show up and compete for their affection. "Horrible Bosses" 2 helmers Sean Anders and John Morris are currently in talks to direct from a script by McKay, Chris Henchy, Brian Burns and Etan Cohen (who was attached to direct a previous version of the film co-starring Vince Vaughn). Directed by McKay, "The Other Guys" grossed more than $220 million worldwide (albeit on a steep $100 million budget) and met with largely positive reviews. Wahlberg will be seen in this summer's blockbuster sequel "Transformers: Age of Extinction" while Ferrell has "Welcome to Me" with Kristen Wiig...

There has been plenty of "Star Wars" discussion this week as the people threatening to give us a seventh film in this storied franchise dropped a few casting details on the world. People like Oscar Isaac and Max von Sydow and Adam Driver will be joining old timers Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher for "Star Wars: Episode VII - Whatever Nifty Subtitle They Give It," and we'll probably be hearing about it constantly as the film forges on through production and post-production. To mark today's occasion, director J.J. Abrams and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan offered up a video howdy, which you can watch below if these movies are your thing.
