As far as the live-action iterations of the X-Men are concerned, Patrick Stewart has become synonymous with the character of Professor Charles Xavier. The highly gifted psychic who is the leader of the X-Men, and whose ideals the entire franchise effectively revolves around, was first seen in live-action way back in 2000, with Sony’s X-Men.

This was followed by X2, as the series eventually became one of the most popular live-action superhero iterations ever produced. Throughout these movies, Charles Xavier showed off his extraordinary skills multiple times. Sometimes, it came in the form of him using Cerebro to locate mutants all over the world.
Other times, it came in the form of him being able to freeze individuals to help his young mutants escape, each time they got into trouble. The first such scene popped up in X2, or X2: X-Men United.

At the beginning of Bryan Singer's 2003 superhero film "X2: X-Men United," the title teens are enjoying a school field trip to the local Natural History museum. The kids don't get out too often, as they attend a special school for superpowered mutants, a class of people hated by the populace at large. While they are sitting in the museum cafeteria, a pair of bullies approach Pyro (Aaron Stanford), Iceman (Shawn Shamore), and Rogue (Anna Paquin) asking Pyro for the use of his cigarette lighter. Pyro denies them, and they snatch his Zippo out of his hands, lighting up immediately. Pyro, possessing the superpower to expand fires, winks his eye and causes the bully's lit cigarette to explode, setting his jacket on fire. Iceman, who can fire ice blasts from his hands, extinguishes the fire. Showing off their powers in public is verboten, as they run the risk of being...

Indie and art film producer Jon Kilik, unlike many, remains hopeful for the personal, mid-budget movie for grown-ups. “Those are the films directors love to make and audiences still love,” says Kilik, being feted this week at Poland’s Camerimage cinematography festival for work of special visual sensitivity.
Having flown in from a shoot in Rome, Kilik confesses he still loves being on set after a career spanning four decades, including work with Spike Lee, Julian Schnabel, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Jim Jarmusch and Oliver Stone.
His latest project filming in Europe, “In the Hand of Dante,” starring Gal Gadot and Oscar Isaac in a metaphorical journey through hell to paradise, is characteristic of Kilik’s lifelong passion for bringing challenging works of literature and art to the screen.

Tyler Rake was clinically dead when we last saw him at the end of “Extraction,” tumbling over a bridge in Bangladesh with a fatal, burbling bullet wound to his neck. But death is no match for Netflix.
Chris Hemsworth returns as the sad-sack, gun-for-hire Rake in “Extraction 2” and you’ll thank the giant streamer for such a nifty bit of resurrection because this franchise is pure cinematic adrenalin.

The new movie comes two years after a surprisingly good first instalment, which saw Rake intervene in a feud between two rival drug dealers, survive numerous double-crosses, ask things like “How many hostiles onsite?” and lob an inexhaustible number of grenades.
How he survived it all stuns even his friends. Emerging from a coma in “Extraction 2,” he is stashed...

It’s (finally) official: Prime Video has greenlit Season 2 of “Citadel,” with Joe Russo set to direct the entire season.
The first season of the spy drama, which premiered in April, had a number of directors attached, including Jessica Yu and Newton Thomas Sigel as well as Anthony Russo and Joe Russo on unspecified episodes. On Season 2, however, it will be solely Joe Russo on directing duties, with David Weil returning as showrunner.
Prime Video has also revealed that its big-budget original — which stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and features Lesley Manville and Stanley Tucci — is its second most-watched new original series outside the U.S. behind “Rings of Power” and its fourth most-watched program worldwide.
All episodes of Season 1 will land on Prime Video on Friday. Meanwhile, the series premiere will be made free to stream without membership on both Prime Video and the ad-supported Freevee for a month in the U.

Citadel, the long-in-the-works global spy thriller drama from Amazon Studios and the Russo Brothers’ Agbo, is eyeing the biggest debut for a series on the streamer based on original IP.
“Citadel, the #1 title on Prime! In its series debut, this show attracted one of the largest global audiences in the history of Prime Video – such an incredible performance for new and original IP,” Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke wrote on Instagram.
She would not elaborate but, according to a source close to the production, Citadel, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, follows only Prime Video’s Lotr: Rings Of Power in launch numbers since its April 28 debut. Rings of Power premiered Sept. 1 with more 25 million viewers in its first day, Amazon said at the time.

A good spy thriller has to have the two staple ingredients: a killer concept headed by a credible protagonist and an antagonist. That said, we are all assured that the cinematic value of espionage thrillers will never be lost.
Having offered some of the greatest action movies in cinema history, and giving us convoluted stories, smart plot twists, blasts, flare-ups and umpteen bangs, ideally, a spy thriller packs in so much as to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Imagine for a moment that in the late 2000s, Marvel did not simply announce a movie about Iron Man, but that they would simultaneously go into production on Captain America, Thor, and Avengers films, with even more in immediate development, and that these would be among the most expensive movies ever made. In hindsight, we know this would have worked out well. (Well, maybe not the expense part.) But at the time, no one knew that audiences would be interested in any of these films, let alone that they would...

Citadel doesn’t premiere on Amazon Prime Video until April 28, but the spy thriller starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden is set for a second season, and it’s coming to California.
The series executive produced by the Russo Brothers has been awarded a whopping $25 million in tax credits to relocate from the UK to the Golden State for Season 2, the California Film Commission said Monday. In total, seven TV series — two relocations, five new shows — are in line to receive around $80 million in incentives for this allocation round. See the list below.
In fact, Citadel isn’t the only Amazon series to benefit from California’s generous program this time around, with a list that includes a couple of untitled series as well as HBO’s Wondermill, which appears to be a code name for The Rehearsal, whose first season filmed in Oregon. The Sands International Film Festival, Scotland’s burgeoning film event, opened its second edition this weekend with the world premiere screening of Citadel, the much-talked-about Prime Video series from Marvel auteurs Anthony and Joe Russo.
Two episodes of varying length, but both well under the hour mark, played as a surprise screening for the packed opening night crowd. The response from the audience, which comprised a mix of industry professionals and students from the University of St. Andrews, a co-organizer of the fest, was jubilant with heavy laughs and gasps for the surprisingly funny yet tricky spy thriller.
The ambitious series is led by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, who play members of a secret global spy agency called Citadel. After a deadly attack, the agency is disbanded, and its elite agents are wiped of their memories. With Citadel out the way, a new powerful syndicate, Manticore, is rising in the void.

The official teaser trailer of Extraction 2 has been released. And it looks fantastic! The film was shot mainly on the Arri Mini Lf, with some scenes on the Red Komodo. However, by watching the trailer, we assume that the Komodo was the no.1 player here. Here are our two cents.
Director Sam Hargrave shooting Extraction 2. Picture: Jasin Boland Extraction 2: Same as 1, but better… a lot better
Extraction 1 was one of the best Netflix action films ever made. The film implements crazy cinematography techniques led by director Sam Hargrave. Dp was Newton Thomas Sigel, however, due to the challenging oner shots (long takes) that demanded specialized physical expertise, Hargrave was the man behind the camera. As a former stuntman, he was able to maneuver the Red Monstro during car chases and stitched long shots. Anyway, Hargrave, the director of the sequel, said that Extraction 2 contains even more extreme cinematography.

Amazon Studios and MGM boss Jennifer Salke and Citadel star Priyanka Chopra Jonas sat down Friday in what is one of few entertainment-business discussions this year at SXSW. While Chopra Jonas was fearless about asking Salke how algorithms factor into programming decisions, a notable takeaway was when the Indian actress revealed she was getting compensated equally with her male lead co-star, Richard Madden (without naming him by name).

Apologies to anyone who had to pay rent today and is particularly sensitive to blatant displays of egregious wealth, but The Russo Bros. series "Citadel" for Prime Video apparently cost the megacorporation over 200 million thanks to ridiculously expensive reshoots. Amazon's Prime Video intended "Citadel" to become the new flagship series on the platform, but the production has been inundated with problems, including half of the creative team exiting over creative differences. The news broke today at The Hollywood Reporter, which estimates that the "Avengers" directing duo are well on their way to creating one of the most expensive shows ever made.
This is a textbook example of "risk vs. reward," as "Citadel" is supposed to be the home base for a series of localized spin-offs of the global spy thriller. On paper, this sounds like a real winner of a plan, but the execution has proven to be ridiculously expensive.

Thanks to the incredible box-office success of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo have earned a lot of leeway when it comes to budgets. Studios are willing to throw a lot of money at the duo who directed one of the highest-grossing movies of all-time, but the budget of one of their upcoming projects seems to be spiralling out of control. The Russo Brothers are behind Citadel, a spy thriller series for Amazon that’s meant to be one of their flagship shows. However, THR has reported that struggles behind-the-scenes have led to half of the creative team exiting the series, prompting a bunch of reshoots which has pushed the budget to over 200 million.

Channing Tatum has a new movie in theaters. That in itself is something of an event, given that the last time the “Magic Mike” stripper extraordinaire starred in a somewhat prominent movie was “Logan Lucky” in 2017, which came one year after the Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” For the most part, Tatum has been fairly quiet, doing only a handful of voiceover work and taking on some bit parts. With “Dog,” however, the movie star who broke out with “Step Up” and “Stop-Loss” before carrying tentpoles like “21 Jump Street” is showing a different impulse behind the camera.
Tatum co-directed “Dog” with his longtime writing and producing partner Reid Carolin, and the pair have made a surprisingly touching and thoughtful look at a broken man rediscovering himself through an unlikely canine connection. Tatum plays U.S. army ranger Briggs, who’s tasked with driving a military working dog from Washington to...

While the film Dog could be mistaken as another examination of the ravages of war, it proves itself to be a far more rewarding experience thanks in large part to an earnest performance from Channing Tatum, as well as one from his canine costar.
Essentially a “buddy” picture that follows two former Army Rangers – Briggs (Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois dog) – as they make their way down the Pacific Coast to attend their fellow soldier’s funeral. As is the custom in this type of film, the pair initially drive each completely crazy and Briggs’s suspect motives for taking on the assignment make the two soldiers seem less than friends and more like adversaries until they each lower their emotional barriers and try to actually connect in a meaningful way with one another.
Although the film begins as a sort of mismatched pairing comical turn with Lulu not...

The camera loves Channing Tatum, and that makes up for a lot in “Dog,” a corny road movie that mostly panders to fans of Tatum and/or dogs, as well as any moviegoer who still thinks that making a big show of supporting the troops (any troops) makes them more human than, uh, most everyone else.
Tatum plays Army Ranger Jackson Briggs, a selfish but irrepressible grunt who travels along the Pacific coast (from Washington to Arizona) with Lulu, an aggressive but misunderstood Army dog who’s scheduled to be put down after she makes a guest appearance at her dead handler’s funeral.
Briggs’ needlessly defensive everyman personality holds “Dog” back from being as good as its high-concept premise. Thankfully, Tatum, who co-directed the movie with screenwriter and producer Reid Carolin (“Magic Mike Xxl”), mostly gets by on-screen charisma alone, since he and his collaborators give his character ample...

The race for best cinematography is among the most competitive races this year at the Oscars. Black-and-white dramas, sci-fi dazzlers and Hollywood blockbusters are among the contenders, and it’s not entirely sure where it all might land. The American Society of Cinematographers, which announces its nominees tomorrow, will set a tone leading up to the opening of Oscar nomination voting, which begins on Thursday.
From ASC’s theatrical releases category to the Oscars, the track record averages about four out of five matches every year. Past ASC selections like “First Man” (Linus Sandgren), “Ford v Ferrari” (Phedon Papamichael), and last year’s “Cherry” (Newton Thomas Sigel) failed to transition to the Academy in favor of “Never Look Away” (Caleb Deschanel), “The Lighthouse” (Jarin Blaschke) and “Judas and the Black Messiah” (Sean Bobbitt). The last time they perfectly aligned was in 2017.

Cinematographers Hoyte van Hoytema, Sean Bobbitt, Newton Thomas Sigel, Joshua James Richards, and Dariusz Wolski always deliver visually stunning work, but they outdid themselves this year with their 2021 Oscar-nominated titles. From the humungous scope of “Tenet” (Hoytema) to the reimagining of Western palettes in “Nomadland” and “News of the World”, there was so much beauty among this year’s Academy Award nominees that it wouldn’t be right to overlook the great work of these cinematographers. As is tradition at IndieWire, we’ve rounded up the most unforgettable shots from this year’s 2021 Oscar nominees ahead of the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony.

The American Society of Cinematographers were so impressed by the black-and-white lensing of “Mank” that it awarded Erik Messerschmidt the Best Cinematography prize at its annual awards on Sunday. He edged out three of his Oscar rivals — Phedon Papamichael for “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Joshua James Richards for “Nomadland” and Dariusz Wolski for “News of the World — as well Newton Thomas Sigel for “Cherry. The fifth Oscar contender, Sean Bobbitt for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” was snubbed by the ASC.
Over its 35-year history, the ASC has predicted 140 of the 175 Oscar nominees, including four in both 2019 and 2020 and all five in both 2018 and 2017. However, the ASC choice for the best in the business has presaged the eventual winner at the Oscars only 15 times in 34 years:
Dean Semler, “Dances with Wolves” (1991)
John Toll, “Braveheart” (1996)
John Seale, “The English Patient” (1997)
Russell Carpenter, “Titanic” (1998)
Conrad L. Hall, “American Beauty” (2000)

“Mank” cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt upset “Nomadland” Dp Joshua James Richards, the Oscar favorite, at the 35th annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards on Sunday. The win for David Fincher’s monochromatic biopic, with Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) struggling to churn out a first draft of “Citizen Kane,” was a surprise, given the momentum that has been with Richards since he won Camerimage’s prestigious Golden Frog last year. However, Richards (previously nominated for the Spotlight Award for “The Rider” but is not a current ASC member) still remains the Oscar favorite for shooting Chloé Zhao’s Best Picture frontrunner (she is also the favorite to take Best Director).
Yet it is a breakthrough achievement for Fincher’s go-to cinematographer from “Mindhunter.” Messerschmidt recreated a Golden Age of Hollywood in black-and-white, shooting with the Red Ranger Helium Monochrome, and bolstered by the Cinefade variable depth of field tool to emulate...

When the 35th edition of the American Society of Cinematographers Awards for Outstanding Achievement convenes on April 18 to announce the winners, all eyes will be on the future of their craft.
This year’s crop of nominees in the feature film category includes two fresh faces and three previous contenders — but a distinct lack of usual suspects and past superstars like Roger Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki, Robert Richardson, Janusz Kaminski and Rodrigo Prieto. Perhaps it’s a matter of timing in this strange year, with some big titles being held back, or prestigious projects landing prior to the pandemic. And surely, the quarantine had some effect on how this year’s films were seen and perceived.
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” brought Phedon Papamichael his seventh ASC nod, following last year’s “Ford v Ferrari,” while “News of the World,” the Tom Hanks Western, gave Dariusz Wolski his second, a full 25 years after his first,...

The cinematography for “Mank,” “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “News of the World” and “Cherry” has been nominated as the best film work of 2020 by the American Society of Cinematographers, the Asc announced on Wednesday.
The first four of those films were expected to be recognized by the Asc and are thought to be strong contenders for the Oscar for Best Cinematography, but “Cherry” came as a surprise. The Russo brothers film came out in February to withering reviews and had not been considered an awards contender until the Asc included its cinematographer, Newton Thomas Sigel, in its list of nominees.
“Cherry” landed that nomination over a group of films that included “Tenet,” “Minari,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” — and “Da 5 Bloods,” a more high-profile film that was also shot by Sigel.
