The journey begins in Meyrueis, a charming village nestled at the foot of the Cévennes, surrounded by mountains and dense forests. The climb to Cabrillac offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys. Continuing towards Aire de Côte, the trail gradually ascends to the summit of Mont Aigoual, reaching an elevation of 1567 meters. From this vantage point, hikers are rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views of the Cévennes and beyond. On a clear day, one can see as far as the Mediterranean and the Alps. The descent towards l’Espérou is a gentle transition into more wooded landscapes. The trail then continues towards the historic passes of Minier, Portes, and Homme Mort, once traversed by shepherds and merchants. Each pass offers unique challenges and stunning vistas. The Pic de Saint Guiral, standing at 1366 meters, is another notable stage of the GR®66. This summit provides a breathtaking view of the Dourbie valley and the surrounding mountains. The descent to Dourbies is a delightful walk through pine forests and alpine meadows, offering a serene and picturesque end to the journey.
