Fair Game

This Australian film is deservedly almost legendary not only in its homeland. It's an incredibly gritty drama about a trio of rednecks going after one woman. It's not even that explicit, but the way the film is shot, the shots used, and the uncertainty portrayed, make it a movie that competes with similar American films and surpasses them in many aspects (the handling of outdoor scenes, for example). A scantily clad protector of Australian wildlife versus a trio of hillbilly nimrods consisting of a mechanic, a stuntman, and a boss (the boss probably because his IQ, though double digits, is enough to surpass the sum of the values of his two colleagues). All three reek of sweat and grease, and their specially modified Ford F-series pickup could contentedly purr alongside a black Lincoln from Silverstein’s The Car in a registered partnership. I was somewhat disappointed that aside from property damage and dignity issues, not much happens for quite a while. The music is as extravagant as it is terrible (especially with the inclusion of drums), the acting fits the genre box, and the transitions of characters in time and space don’t make much sense. Mario Andreacchio claimed he wanted to create something in the style of comic book violence and was surprised that anyone took his film seriously.
