Petr Čepek, Rudolf Hrušínský, Jaromír Hanzlík, and Jiří Menzel's steady hand. However, all of this locked in thickheaded replicas, dysfunctional humor, and an unappealing story. Cutting It Short can be admired from all sides, but The Snowdrop Festival is a whole lot of nothing in melancholic clothing. ()
For fans of Bohumil Hrabal and Jiří Menzel, this is a must-watch and truly a cult classic. For others, it's an enjoyable, laid-back comedy featuring many top-tier Czech actors, who rarely appear together in such a strong ensemble. It's an example of exemplary collaboration between the author and the director - Menzel and Hrabal simply understood each other. There is nothing significant to criticize about the direction, but this part of Menzel's work doesn't appeal to me for the same reason others find it delightful - its idyllic tranquility. I prefer darker, more conflict-driven works that provoke thought and lead to some form of catharsis. Overall impression: 75%. ()
If someone can do it, they do it, and this applies both to the literary original by Bohumil Hrabal, which launched the cheerful panopticon of the cottage colony in the Kersko region, and to the film by Jiří Menzel, who reaffirmed his refined talent for converting quality literature into a quality film. What works for Hrabal through words works for Menzel thanks to his precise work with image, script and actors. A beautiful film, poetic in the most ethical sense. Jaromír Hanzlík in his second fateful role... ()
Jiří Menzel is a great storyteller, Rudolf Hrušínský a great actor a Bohumil Hrabal a great writer. Nothing but an absolutely exceptional, funny and iconic film that never gets old can get out of that. ()
