Kinds of Kindness (2024)
I was curious to see Yorgos Lanthimos' next film after the brilliant Poor Things, but I was also I was a little worried because of the running time and the relatively short gap between both films. The short story structure can lend a layered and complex feel to films, and it's a shame that Kinds of Kindnesses didn't rely more on the interweaving of the stories, and rather focused on shocking the viewer in an blatant way. Each of the stories had an engaging premise, but due to the overlong running time, I struggled to properly enjoy the film as a whole. This menu of three bizarre courses sat with my average impression, which is a shame given the initial ingredients.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
Tim Burton returns to his creative roots and, after thirty-six long years, reintroduces us to the world of Beetlejuice and his malicious plans and schemes. The old Burtonian atmosphere, mixing both visual and practical effects, breathed on people during the screening. I enjoyed the return of the old characters, but also the arrival of the new ones (though the untapped potential of the macabre femme fatale played by Monica Bellucci is a shame). Burton still has good ideas and can translate them engagingly to the screen in his own grimly colourful way. Aside from the goofy Catherine O'Hara, I enjoyed Willem Dafoe's theatrical performances as the demon-faced "detective". Last but not least, I loved that the trailers didn't reveal one of the important plot lines. All in all, a weak four stars. P.S. Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetl...
M3GAN (2022)
As a film version of an episode of Black Mirror, M3GAN certainly looked very promising on paper, yet I wasn't too thrilled with the final product. Not even excited! Not even scared! And that's quite a shame in something that's supposed to be a horror movie. The character deaths are almost out of focus, which also took away from some of the tension – not that I needed hectoliters of blood, but in this case, it's almost like no one even died. What stuck in my head the most was the doll's dance and the forest run, otherwise it was boring to the point of misery.

58. KVIFF: "Bylo to překrásné a bylo toho dost"
Den se dnem se sešel a těch osm dní na 58. KVIFF uplynulo jako voda (v řece Teplé). Na svou první účast na karlovarském festivalu, navíc v pozici ČSFD agenta, jsem se těšil, zároveň jsem měl trochu obavy z toho, jak moc velký ten festival je. Víkendový začátek i konec se nesl a nese v poněkud hektičtějším (a řádně vyhřátém) duchu se spoustou návštěvníků festivalu, ale i turistů z různých koutů republiky i zahraničí, zatímco během týdne byl znát menší pokles v počtu lidí ve Varech, což jsem osobně velmi ocenil.
I když jsem nikdy nebyl moc velký fanoušek matematiky, dovolím si níže menší číselný přehled v rámci mého prvního KVIFF:
--- Počet dní strávených na festivalu: 8
--- Počet zhlédnutých filmů: 24
--- Počet minut strávených při projekcích (dle stopáží): 2289 (38 hodin 9 minut)
--- Průměrné hodnocení (počet */film): 3,46
--- Průměrný počet naspaných hodin (denně): 6-6,5
--- Počet zkonzumovaných teplých lázeňských oplatek: 3
--- Počet pokusů dostat se na projekci filmu Vlny: 2
--- Počet navštívených rozhleden a vyhlídek: 5
--- Počet policistů, kteří po mně chtěli identifikaci: 1 (hned první den, přičemž šlo prý o omyl)
--- Počet záběrů na mě v oficiálním spotu KVIFF: 1
Už teď mohu téměř s jistotou říct, že to nebyla moje první a zároveň poslední účast na festivalu, a dokážu si představit, že v roce 2025 dorazím znovu. A určitě budu podruhé věnovat větší pozornost programu, abych vše neplácal den dva dopředu, jako tomu bylo letos. Je důležité nepodcenit přípravu! Z tohoto důvodu mi teď například propluly mezi prsty vysoce oceňované Vlny od Jiřího Mádla.
Pokud bych se měl podělit o nejlepší zhlédnuté filmy - dle mého názoru - vypadala by TOP 5 následovně:
(1) V zemi našich bratrů: Tři kapitoly! Tři silné příběhy! Jeden smutný osud!
(2) Substance: Krvelačná černohumorná satira na ideál ženské krásy!
(3) Mord: Zabijačková pocta klasikám československé nové vlny!
(4) Na kordy: Bratři, jak se patří?!
(5) Kneecap: Hip-hopová jízda na káčku!
Jakousi pomyslnou karlovarskou "Zlatou lázeňskou oplatku" bych udělil filmu Cabo Negro, protože - WTF?!
V neposlední řadě bych chtěl poděkovat Martinovi (POMO) za možnost agentovat na letošním ročníku KVIFF a taktéž čtyřem agentům a jedné agentce, s nimiž jsme v duchu festivalu vedli podnětné diskuze (nejen) o filmech.
Teď už zbývá jediné: NA SHLEDANOU, KARLOVY VARY! :-)
