Buttler, a young count on his way home during the holidays, is caught by baron Dőry and is then forced to marry Dőry's daughter. The ceremony is, paradoxically, administered by the same clergyman who had made the girl pregnant. It is impossible to undo this marriage. In vain do sensible people try their best to jointly fight the alliance between the Church and the royals. The story concludes by count Buttler and his love leaving this country of lords and clergymen after what appears to be his own funeral. (Verleiher-Text)
