The story of two young orphans: Gwynplaine, a young boy who has been facially disfigured with a scar which makes him look like he's constantly smiling, and Dea, a young blind girl. Many years later, when both are grown, the adoptive family travel together and put on a show where Gwynplaine has become a star. (Vendetta Films)

A charming return to a classic that everyone has long forgotten. The sets and costumes are almost dreamlike, while the acting lyrical and fairy-tale-like. I don’t have the slightest complaint about it. Pre-revolutionary France always has so many decadent pleasures... By that, I don't just mean Markéta Hrubešová's cleavage in a supporting role or Boris Hybner's classic mime face in the crowd. I'm already looking forward to recalling the Conrad Veidt version. ()
