Mrs. Cservenka's tenants, Takács Miklós, chemical engineer and his fiancée Ilonka, also a chemist, are working on an invention, on whose success they depend for getting married. Miklós's roommate, Dódi a dancing-master, instead of paying rent, teaches Mrs. Cservenka's daughter of artistic ambitions, Piri, to dance and sing. They also plan to get married. The youths' plans, however, are destroyed by the war. The two fiancés go to the front. Ilonka secretly works on Miklós's invention and in an accident loses her eyesight. Now she does not want Miklós to tie his life to her and sends him a break-up letter. But the young man, who, having got wounded, returns unexpectedly, stands by her.
