English As you can tell from my rating, I wasn’t impressed. The film felt twice as long because I soon lost interest in the plot. It was all rather dull, there was little humor for a comedy, the writing was weak overall, I didn’t relate to the main character, and the only moment worth some laughs for me was the school bus. I’m not saying it was a total flop, it wouldn’t offend even Catholic housewives despite its subject matter, I just found it a bit boring and not very funny. / Lesson learned: Screw fate and just go for it. English Comedy, which is not really a comedy, made me sad at times. In fact, Sex and Death in the first half felt to me like a situational, slightly crazy comedy, interspersed with a series of humorous situations (a tobacconist with a "Cunt, that's the bomb" shirt seduced by a murderess), a lot of witty lines ("Foreplay is for losers"), and gags. The second half is much more serious with romantic and psychological elements. The theme of an irredeemable seducer who receives an email with a list of women he has slept with and those he has yet to sleep with has great potential, and I believe the creators have dealt with it very well. I felt like the plot really transitions between genres - from a mischievous comedy, through wild romance, then drama, and finally to a humorous and comedic conclusion. Yet all parts together create an impressive whole. Personally, the romantic part touched me the most, when Roderick meets Dr. Miranda after burying deeply his list of "trophies" and tries to live life differently than before. I have never seen or known Simon Baker, who portrayed Roderick, but his performance thrilled me. Winona Ryder as a mass murderer delivered her standard performance, I just do not understand why an actress with such talent is currently getting such strange roles like the Darwin Awards. Perhaps her kleptomaniac scandals have harmed her. And Lechero from Prison Break alias Robert Wisdom as Mr. Alpha was just the icing on the cake. I must also mention the downsides - I also do not understand why many American comedies have to have the main hero or heroine have a best friend of the opposite sex who is homosexual. And some scenes were quite predictable. However, the overall impression is much more than good. ()
