Can’t stop, won’t stop iterating.

While it’s ideal to build empathy maps at the beginning of your design process, FigJam co-exists seamlessly with Figma so you can iterate and improve these maps as new data becomes available. It’s as simple as creating shared component libraries in Figma that you can also access inside FigJam.

Distilled user information in one visual reference.

Start your design process with empathy mapping and 10x your new content, website designs, or app prototypes.

Different personas, different maps: Plot the end user with shapes, text, and images at the center of your board.

Observable vs. introspective activities: Use connectors and lines to flank the end user with quadrants that map what they see, say, do, and hear.

Import CSVs of your user research or create persona checklists with widgets. Proceed to then map your team’s stickies across quadrants.

FAQs

An empathy map is a visual tool that helps teams gain a deeper understanding of user behavior, needs, and motivations. It's an effective exercise, especially for product and design teams, to reflect on the overall customer experience from multiple perspectives.

Use our free empathy map template to conduct customer research. Follow these steps to effectively fill out the template:

  1. Start by identifying the user you're intending to visualize.
  2. Write out a name and description of the person. Include an image if you have one.
  3. Describe this person's pains - what are their fears, frustrations, and worries?
  4. Describe this person's gains - what are their wants, needs, and hopes?
  5. Putting yourself in this person's shoes, identify what they see, hear, say, do, think, and feel.

Empathy maps are helpful for any team looking to conduct user research and learn more about their target audience. Specific use cases include:

  • Launching a new product or service: Use an empathy map to understand customer needs and pain points. Create a product that solves for both.
  • Strategy planning for marketing campaigns: Learn more about your target customer. What type of messaging would engage them the most?
  • Helping customer service teams address pain points: Reflect on customers' concerns, and create proactive solutions for how to address them.
