The basic premise of Transformative Leadership is that everyone can lead, and that particularly in this transformative moment, everybody contributes to, and in fact co-creates, the world we live in, whether conscious of their agency or not. Every choice, every action, every discussion, every interaction is a reflection of how we are leading our own lives. Transformative Leadership invites everybody to ask what kind of a world they are creating through their thoughts, beliefs, actions and interactions. Transformative leadership is, at its heart, a participatory process of creative collaboration and transformation for mutual benefit. At the core of Transformative Leadership are 4 orienting concepts, Ways of Being, Relating, Knowing, and Doing, that assist in the framing and development of our understanding of the world, and our own approach to living and leading.

This article outlines the philosophical and pedagogical underpinnings of a masters degree in Transformative Leadership with a specific focus on the role of creativity and self-creation. It uses the design of the degree as a way of address some of the considerable complexities of the field of leadership, but also the larger planetary and personal challenges facing individuals who are committed to contributing to positive social change.
Technological progress occurs at an ever-increasing rate, changing not only the speed of business, but the very nature of how business is conducted. In response to these changes, a new paradigm of transformative leadership has emerged. Leadership development (LD) initiatives that incorporate transformative learning principles demonstrate positive impact on executive performance (Ciporen, 2008). Transformative leaders actively foster leadership by employees throughout the organization; this, in turn, catalyzes systemic learning (Watkins, Marsick, & Faller, 2012). Transformative learning remains controversial, however, due to questions regarding deliverability and measurability at both the personal and organizational levels. We conclude that transformative learning will continue to evolve as an important framework for developing the next generation(s) of leaders.
