Prema (Kannada: ಪ್ರೇಮ) (born on 6th January 1977) is an Indian film actress. She has worked as a lead actress in numerous Kannada and Telugu films besides working in a few Tamil and Malayalam film industries. She has appeared in many commercially successful and critically acclaimed feature films. She received the Karnataka State Film Award and Filmfare Best Actress awards for her performances in Kannada films. She has featured in Om and Yajamana, which are the two major blockbuster and highest grossing films of their time in Kannada Cinema.[1]

She has starred opposite many leading actors such as Mohanlal, Shivrajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Ravichandran, Upendra, Saikumar and Ramesh Aravind in her career spanning over two decades.

Early life

Prema was born in Bangalore on January 6th. Prema studied in Mahila Seva Samaja high school in Bangalore. She completed her PUC in SSMRV college, Bangalore. Her hometown is Coorg. She was a national level player in high jump and volleyball.

Film career

Prema stepped into Kannada filmdom with the movie "Savyasachi" starring against Shivarajkumar in 1995.

Later from the block buster Om Prema gained a comfortable position in 1996 and she had been rated high in her capacity to emote any kind of role that's given to her.

She won a State Award Winner for the Category 'Best Actress' in 1996 for the movie Om. She bagged Filmfare ('Best Actress') award for the movie 'Kanasugara' in 2001. Other awards include Screen Videocon, Udaya TV, Devikarani, Chitrapremigala Sangha and Cinema Express award.

Prema, on the lines of some well-known actresses of the yesteryear, has the credit of having stayed away from controversies and affairs and enjoys a high reputation among movie-goers, esp, womenfolk.

Prema has also gone on to act in other languages. In 1996, famous Tamil Director Suresh Krishna cast her in his Malayalam movie, The Prince , opposite Superstar Mohanlal. Today she is has acted in five languages. Her Telugu language film, Devi made a collection of Rs. 18 crores and its dubbed version was released in Hindi language.

She has acted in more than 50 movies in kannada and more than 20 movies in telugu.

Currently, she has done an important role in Sundarakanda, a Bapu movie with Charmee Kaur as the main female lead.

Personal life

Prema is married to Jeevan Appachu, a Coorgi (Kodava) Software Placement Consultant / Business Man. They got married on Thursday, July 6, 2006.
