Keeping track of all the latest video games coming out is an increasingly complex task, what with multiple PC storefronts, Xbox One, PS4, Switch, mobile, and more to keep track of, but don’t worry, I’m here to help. Every month I'll be running down the games you need to be keeping an eye on, from the big triple-A headliners, to the intriguing indies you might overlook.
After a jam-packed October, the flow of AAA titles slows down a bit in November, but there are still a handful of big games to look forward to including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Super Mario RPG, and EA Sports WRC, and more. That said, things are particularly busy on the indie front, with tons of promising titles, including The Talos Principle II, The Invincible, Broken Roads, and much more.
Note: While I may have played demos or got early access to some of the games recommended in this article, in most cases I’m simply choosing games that look promising, and can’t vouch for the end product. Do wait for reviews before buying!
That said, here are the games you should be looking out for in November…
The Headliners
EA Sports WRC (PC, Xbox Series X/S & PS5, Nov. 3)
Coming from the same Codemasters team behind the Dirt series, EA Sports WRC promises to be a dust-caked treat for rally fans. In addition to impressive UE5 visuals and the realistic-yet-accessible handling Codemasters is known for, players can design their own rides, tackle various real-world rally moments, and more. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, Nov. 9)
For those a having trouble keeping up with the former Yakuza franchise, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is a throwback spinoff, featuring Kazuma Kiryu as its protagonist and the brawling gameplay the series was once known for (mainline Like a Dragon games are now turn-based RPGs). Beyond the brawling, expect new areas to explore (the Sotenbori district of Osaka and the Isezaki Ijincho district of Yokohama), plenty of wacky minigames, and more Yakuza comfort food. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, Nov. 10)
For a while there was some debate as to whether Activision would deliver a full core CoD in 2023, but in the end, the tradition held. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III features a new campaign from Sledgehammer Games, a slate of remade maps from the original CoD: Modern Warfare 2, and, unusually for a Modern Warfare game, a full Zombies mode. The overall package perhaps feels a bit tossed together, but it will still probably be the best-selling game of the year. You can pre-order Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III here.
Super Mario RPG (Switch, Nov. 17)
For years, Nintendo seemed to be inexplicably down on the combination of Mario and RPG elements, phasing them out of series like Paper Mario. Well, it seems they’ve had a change of heart, because a full remake of the original Super Mario RPG is on the way. The game features super-sharp new 3D visuals, but otherwise, this is the Mario RPG anybody who was around for the 16-bit era fondly remembers. You can pre-order Super Mario RPG here.
Promising Indies
The Talos Principle II (PC, Xbox Series X/S & PS5, Nov. 2)
Croteam is mainly known for their bombastic Serious Sam shooters, but back in 2014 they released the surprisingly-thoughtful philosophy-infused puzzle game The Talos Principle. Nearly a decade later, Croteam are back with The Talos Principle II, which doesn’t look to reinvent the wheel, but ought to deliver more head-scratching puzzles and another through-provoking story (the writing team from the first game returns). The Invincible (PC, Xbox Series X/S & Switch, Nov. 6)
There’s no shortage of sci-fi games out there, but The Invincible promises a more low-key “hard” sci-fi adventure based on the works of acclaimed Polish author Stanisław Lem. Players find themselves stranded on the unexplored planet of Regis III and must use their skills and tools to try and rescue their crew, with every choice mattering. If you’re looking for a sci-fi game where a laser rifle isn’t an answer to every problem, this one might be for you. Here’s the Steam page for The Invincible.
Broken Roads (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 & Switch, Nov. 13)
What if you took the classic isometric Fallout games and changed the setting to Mad-Max-esque Australian outback dystopia? Well, mate, you’d have Broken Roads. In addition to the unique setting, players can expect a deep morality system, versatile classless character building, and more. This shrimp looks like it deserves a spot on your barbie. KarmaZoo (PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5 & Switch, Nov. 14)
There have been various attempts to do co-op platformers over the years, but KarmaZoo takes it to another level. KarmaZoo supports up to 10 random online players at once, each of which can play as one of 50 characters will different abilities. Play nicely with others and you’ll earn Karma, which you can spend to unlock characters and other goodies. This one’s a whole lot more friendly than your typical Devolver-Digital-published game, but it still should deliver the quality their games are known for. Here’s the Steam page for KarmaZoo.
American Arcadia (PC, Nov. 15)
Have you ever been frustrated that The Truman Show never got the video game adaptation it deserved? Okay, probably not, but if you dug that movie, you should probably put American Arcadia on your radar. You play as Trevor, who attempts to escape the Truman-esque reality show he’s trapped in with the help of the show’s stage technician Angela. As Trevor, you’ll platform and sneak to safety while Angela uses her hacking skills to open paths forward. This one looks unusually ambitious and polished for an indie, with a star-studded voice cast including Yuri Lowenthal (Spider-Man) and Cissy Jones (Firewatch) lending their pipes to the game.
