About us
We're a charity that works alongside young disabled musicians to challenge preconceptions and bring about greater diversity in music. Through the National Open Youth Orchestra, the world's first disabled-led national youth ensemble, we're pioneering a new creative orchestra where talented young disabled and non-disabled young musicians rehearse and perform together. With Open Orchestras, we're behind the largest community of inclusive ensembles in the UK running in special schools. We've also developed Clarion, an award-winning accessible instrument that can be played expressively with any part of the body, including the eyes... Together we can make positive change happen!

Have you heard about the Clarion? An innovative, electronic, accessible instrument that can be played expressively with any part of the body, this instrument is being championed by a range of musicians, including Alessandro Vazzana and 2017 RPS Impact Award-winning organisation Open Up Music. In the latest issue of Philharmonic, our exclusive RPS Members’ magazine, we heard from Alessandro and Open Up Music’s CEO, Barry Farrimond-Chuong MBE to learn more about this instrument and the impact it is having on accessible music-making. RPS Corporate Partner ABRSM has been working closely with Open Up Music to include the Clarion as the first electronic musical instrument to be assessed by ABRSM through its Open Music Assessment, championing the instrument to become much more widely known across the UK. There was tea, biscuits and music! Our guest was so interesting that someone nearly forgot their next meeting... We're proud of shaking things up from Bristol with so many wonderful neighbours and friends at Bristol Beacon, National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain, Paraorchestra and more!
This week I visited Open Up Music ( https://lnkd.in/ezdzYsFF ) a remarkable charity which enables disabled young people play musical instruments. So often they are excluded from ensemble music making, in schools and music groups. Open Up Music empowers them to become musicians and furthermore they have invented The Clarion an innovative accessible musical instrument that can be played with any part of the body, including eye movement. It is loaded onto a computer or ipad and uses coloured patterns each colour representing a musical note which can be programmed in by the user. The tone and volume can also be controlled making it truly expressive. I had the pleasure of being able to try the Clarion - as a musician I could see what a wonderful invention this is for those who cannot access traditional instruments. The charity is led and run by outstanding people who are dedicating their lives to enabling young people participate in music. Thank you so much Barry Farrimond-Chuong MBE Jonathan Westrup and Alison Maxhuni for hosting me it was a real joy to spend time with you.
