E3G is an independent climate change think tank, tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate.

About us

E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. We work on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. We are experts on climate diplomacy, energy policy and sustainable finance. E3G builds cross-sectoral coalitions to achieve carefully defined outcomes, chosen for their capacity to leverage change. E3G works closely with like-minded partners in government, politics, civil society, science, the media, public interest foundations and elsewhere. We currently have offices in London, Brussels, Berlin and Washington DC. The core of our capability lies with our diverse, experienced and creative staff. E3G’s founding directors have a unique experience working on energy, environment, security policy and diplomacy challenges in the UK Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister's Strategy Unit and as senior political advisors. E3G was founded in 2004 to address the challenge of how to deliver transformational policy change. Our experience has been that the main obstacles to sustainable development lie not in a lack of analysis or available resources, but in the silo-based nature of institutions and decision-makers. We, therefore, work to align politics and policy to leverage strategic outcomes. E3G is established in the UK as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. E3G maintains full independence in all its activities and is funded by a mix of foundations, government bodies and NGOs. E3G is established in Belgium as a not-for-profit association (ASBL) and in Washington as a private company with 501c3 tax exempt status.

From September 22nd to 25th, experts from E3G’s energy, finance, and climate diplomacy teams will be at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool. As the new Labour government places green growth at the heart of its industrial strategy, we are keen to discuss how green investment, and clean power can drive the UK's economic transformation. The shift to a clean energy system presents a pivotal opportunity to lower bills, support jobs, and enhance energy security. By unlocking Labour's twin missions of sustainable growth and affordable clean energy, we can fuel Britain’s economic engine, create jobs, and foster innovation. With ongoing global climate talks and #COP29 on the horizon, the UK's credibility as a global climate leader depends on its domestic #ClimateAction. Find out who is available to comment on the #LabourConference here👇 https://lnkd.in/e6dRkgGh

In his first major foreign policy speech at Kew Gardens on Tuesday, David Lammy emphasised the urgent need for the UK to place climate at the centre of its foreign policy agenda. #UNGA79 is an opportunity for world leaders to coalesce with political resolve in demonstrating why climate action is a must-have – not a nice-to-have – priority for governments. 🌿 Why #ClimateAction is crucial: 🛡️Global Security: Climate change exacerbates conflicts, drives displacement, and threatens stability. Prioritising climate action can help mitigate these risks and enhance global security. 📈Global Economic Opportunity: According to the IMF, transitioning to net zero could boost global GDP by 7% and add $43 trillion to the global economy by 2070. Conversely, inaction could cost $178 trillion. Investing in green technologies and sustainable infrastructure is key to future economic growth. 🤝International Cooperation: Climate change demands a unified global response. In a recent survey, over 80% of people worldwide want their governments to enhance climate action and collaborate across borders. # UNGA79 is a pivotal moment to show commitment to climate ambition and international cooperation. Amidst the many pressing issues at play, world leaders must maximise the UNGA moment to showcase climate action remains a key priority. Not only will this demonstrate that international cooperation works at a time when it’s needed more than ever, but it will also show a commitment to a sustainable and secure future, harness the immense opportunities of a green economy, and prevent the far greater human, economic, and environmental costs of inaction. 🔗Read more on this in Kaysie Brown's latest blog here: https://lnkd.in/eS5pUuSd

📣 President Ursula von der Leyen’s new Commission has unveiled portfolios, and for the first time, #housing is a standalone policy area! 🏡 This move is key for integrating #ClimateAction into housing. At E3G, along with many other stakeholders, we look forward to working closely with the Commission and the new team to advance a sustainable built environment.

📣 Fantastic news this morning! The portfolios of the new college of 🇪🇺 Commissioners have been unveiled and, for the first time, housing is explicitly recognized as a policy area in its own right. 🏡 Why is this important? Addressing the rampant housing crisis effectively requires integrating climate considerations throughout the sector. This can be done by repurposing vacant spaces (sufficiency) and renovating poorly insulated homes to improve energy efficiency. ✅ The Energy and Housing Commissioner's portfolio has been broadly defined to cover energy efficiency, investment, and construction. To deliver on this ambitious mandate, and if confirmed by the European Parliament, Dan Jørgensen will need to foster a new era of collaboration among various Directorates-General, and particularly with the Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience, and a Competitive Circular Economy. 🇩🇰 🇩🇰 🇩🇰 I am really pleased that the candidate put forward for this position is from a country with a unique social housing model; green buildings regulations often more ambitious than EU ones, and a financial sector increasingly more aware of its role in supporting the transition of the built environment and acting upon it. While there's still much to improve on, there's also a lot we can learn from Denmark when it comes to housing and energy decarbonisation. At E3G, along many other stakeholders, we look forward to working closely with the Commission to advance the housing, energy, and climate nexus. Together with 17 other organizations, we've published a manifesto outlining practical steps for creating a just and resilient built environment. During his speech earlier this morning, David Lammy positioned the UK at the forefront of global #ClimateAction, pledging to make tackling the climate and nature crises central to the UK’s foreign policy. In response, E3G's Leo Roberts stresses the importance of the #CleanPowerAlliance going beyond just renewables deployment to actively displace fossil fuels and support clean energy access for all nations, not just the wealthiest. 📣 New E3G Blog: Mario Draghi’s vision for Europe's competitiveness Last week, Mario Draghi unveiled his comprehensive 400-page report on Europe's competitiveness, a year after being commissioned by European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen. With 172 policy proposals, the report provides critical insights and strategies for Europe’s future. E3G has analysed the report and distilled the following key points that highlight Draghi’s strategic recommendations for enhancing #EuropeanCompetitiveness: 1. #Decarbonisation as an Economic Opportunity: Recognising decarbonisation as essential to overcoming Europe's competitiveness challenges. 2. Strategic #Investments: Emphasising the need for an additional EUR 800 billion annually to secure future #Prosperity. 3. State-led Intervention in Geopolitics: Draghi advocates for a stronger state role in EU policy, focusing on economic security, resilience, and strategic autonomy through new industrial partnerships and reduced reliance on multilateral institutions. 4. Enhanced European Coordination: Proposing a governance framework to address policy fragmentation and strengthen cross-border value chains. While the report offers bold recommendations, it also highlights the political challenges ahead. Draghi’s assessment calls for urgent action and a coalition of support to drive forward his vision. 🔍 Explore our blog to understand the full implications of Draghi’s proposals and how they could shape Europe’s future: https://lnkd.in/eZtxKGkY The blog was authored by Domien Vangenechten

As President Von der Leyen prepares to announce the new structure and staffing of her European Commission, E3G is asking key questions about Europe's climate and economic future: ● How will portfolios to mainstream the #GreenTransition into key economic and social portfolios? ● Is there broad political ownership of the Green Transition, particularly from the dominant EPP? ● How do the candidates' qualifications and experience prepare them to lead on key Green Transition priorities? ● Is the EU’s external action set-up for greater climate effectiveness? E3G has developed benchmarks for the EU to deliver on a fast, fair and funded green transition in key areas by 2029: ● A competitive and clean European industry: Future-proofing industry through a new Clean Industrial Deal and maintaining Europe’s technological leadership. ● EU’s security and strategic autonomy: Strengthening energy security through renewables and securing access to critical raw materials. ● Europe’s global influence: Reinforcing the EU’s geopolitical standing through climate leadership and a coherent approach to external action. ● A fair and citizen-oriented transition: Ensuring that all Europeans benefit from the Green Transition and are protected from climate impacts. ● Investment in Europe’s prosperity: Mobilising public and private investment to drive Europe’s sustainability and competitiveness. ● Stable and predictable trajectory towards climate safety: Providing a clear regulatory framework to ensure long-term planning towards a climate-neutral and climate-resilient economy.    Whoever President Von der Leyen decides to nominate will be critical in moving Europe closer to these benchmarks. As the new Commission takes shape, we’ll be ready to assess the impact of these appointments on #EUGreenDeal and the broader #ClimateAgenda. Stay tuned for our analysis and insights on what this will mean for the future of Europe’s #ClimateLeadership. 📖 Read more about our ongoing analytical work: Climate in the European Union – E3G: https://lnkd.in/e2XQgBtx
