The mordants bind onto the fiber - creating a chemical complex - then, when exposed to natural dyes, they create insoluble bonds with the dyes - essentially fixing them into the fabric. Q: How does this work?
A: Plants are laid on top of damp, pretreated fabric. The fabric and plants are tightly rolled onto a pipe or dowel then bundled with string or fabric. The bundle is placed over water and steamed to transfer the natural dyes from the plants to the fabric. ✨

Q: Don’t the prints just wash away?
A: If the fabric is properly pretreated with the correct mordants, the dyes will be bound to the fabric and will withstand wash & wear. Each dye plant contains a unique mixture of phytochemicals that have varying levels of colorfastness.
