FDI in Ireland is now prepared to build the grid needed to get Ireland back in the Current Data/AI Led Innovation Age, get on with it Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) after leading the world in the export of Data and Data related services, not only do we not make the shortlist, we don't even make the list for the current Data/AI-Enabled innovation age 🤷‍♂️ Datacentres are the "Canary In The Coalmine" in Ireland and FDI; if you cannot provide a clear and trustworthy plan without constant flip-flopping on the policy, you create Stagnation = Uncertainty = projects go someplace else for ICT-related services, Chip manufacture, pharmaceuticals and many other of the FDI industries which have dragged Ireland up from mainly exporting Live Cattle and People in the 1970's. Delighted to have participated in a panel discussion at the excellent Energy Ireland conference on the topic of accelerating our energy transition. It was a privilege to be alongside some of the key players in the sector. Amazing level of consensus on the panel in relation to the progress we have made to date in decarbonising the electricity sector, on how we have become "stuck" in recent years and the steps we need to take to better utilise the abundant natural resources we have to meet our energy needs. And top of the list in terms of that steps that need to be taken is to enact the new Planning & Development Bill asap. The "common good" needs to be given more weighting in the planning process, as without greater speed and clarity in terms of planning decisions in the infrastructure space we'll be running hard to stand still on the climate and energy security fronts for some time to come. #thegreenrevolution

The plan all other plans in Ireland require was published today. The Transmission Development Plan 2024 – 2033 sets out EirGrid Group’s approach to addressing the challenges of climate change and emissions reduction within the realm of electricity transmission infrastructure, in line with the licence and legislative requirements. By prioritising the integration of renewable energy, enhancing grid resilience, and aligning with policy frameworks, the plan lays the foundation for a sustainable and resilient energy future. Today, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) published a Consultation Paper on EirGrid Group’s draft Transmission Development Plan (TDP) 2024 – 2033 along with the draft TDP (https://lnkd.in/eKGtnSky). EirGrid’s draft TDP is a plan for the development of the Irish electricity transmission network and interconnection encompassing the ten-year period, 2024 to 2033. It presents projects that EirGrid have considered are needed to reinforce the transmission network and are aligned with the strategic objectives laid out by national and EU policies. "When it comes to developing infrastructure in Ireland, you typically have to plan 10 years in advance. This is in order to get through early-stage feasibility; environmental assessments, design, business case, maritime licensing, planning, funding and/or financing, procurement and construction. Honestly, What a nonsense question:- The reality is that EirGrid Group gives a cable to their clients' Homes, Businesses, Retail, Pharmaceutical, Datacentre or corner shops, which can facilitate the Maximum (MIC) amount of electricity at any one time (think water and a plastic pipe). The client then uses more or less of the cable capacity as and when needed; however, you cannot use any more than the maximum cable size at any one time, and it's fixed, not elastic, so you see how ill-informed, populist and frankly stupid this type of question is! We don't push back strongly enough on the financial benefits of deploying more renewable energy in Ireland. The media coverage last week on the lifting in PSO levy was, confusing at best, and damaging at worst, to the industry et large. We need to better message the benefits of wind and renewables to every household in the country. So here's my simple numbers to try explain. 1. Average Household spends €2,000-2,500 per year on electricity. 2. PSO levy hike of €3/month or €36 per year is 1.5-2% of the total annual bill. 3. Wholesale energy costs make up approx 60% of the total energy bill for consumers, so approximately €1500/annum. 4. Wind Energy on average depresses wholesale energy costs by at least 20% per year, so lets assume it is 20%, that's a €300 per year saving if we didn't have wind energy in Ireland and relied on fossil fuel generation. 5. Wind energy thus has a 10x benefit to consumers versus the PSO levy hike seen recently and over 12% benefit to your average consumer per year on wholesale energy basis. So in short, lets continue to shout the benefits of Wind Energy and try to focus on the positives. As well as stopping peat for climate reasons, the economics of peat would ultimately have come undone by Carbon Pricing. And the same is true for other inefficient fossil fuels in the energy mix. Wind energy is and will be the cheapest form of energy we can get in this country.

Excellent job by Ivan Yates facilitating The National Infrastructure Summit and discussions today. Here are a few of my key takeaways. Michele Connolly KPMG highlighted the need and benefit of a political champion for critical infrastructure projects. Frances Ruane of the National Competitiveness and Productivity Council Ireland spoke about how uncertainty negatively impacts productivity and competitiveness, and how this uncertainty has an even bigger impact if it is caused by government / public processes. I really liked the Martian analogies (imagine what they would make of our current planning processes and judicial reviews, how the common good put aside too often for individual interests). Sometimes we really need to step outside of our own environment to see things in perspective. Let's hope if the Martians look in on Ireland this time next year, that our planning processes will have been transformed. My own colleague, Angela Ryan also spoke at this National Infrastructure Summit earlier, setting out Uisce Éireann's plans for delivering critical water and wastewater infrastructure for Dublin which is essential to address our lack of resilience and to ensure we can support housing in key growth areas. Angela shared today the story of our water resilience pressures and reality of where we are today. In the Greater Dublin Area, we are using over 600 million litres every day. It’s not sustainable, with 85% of the flow coming directly from the River Liffey. Yes, even when we get leakage to 20% by 2030, we still need a new water source and it’s urgent. The superb news for this country is that there is a sustainable and resilient solution. The Water Supply Project, which will bring water from the Parteen basin, on the Shannon, will allow for offtakes in Mullingar, Offaly and Westmeath and also relieve the current pressures in our capital city. The River Shannon is a huge water catchment and provides the solution that is the envy of the rest of the world, who don’t have an option like this. Jerry Grant highlighted the need for applying good judgement in addressing risk which is naturally associated with delivering major projects, this led into an interesting discussion on liability, autonomy and attractiveness of certain forms of contract. It was also great to hear the Paul Sheridan, CIF calling for Plan Led Development. Such approaches enable utilities like ours to work more effectively with the development community. It was an excellent conversation among Ireland's infrastructure leadership and a day well spent. There is a common agenda in ensuring Ireland can truly thrive. The unbundling of legacy systems. New grid connections are outlawed, so the data centers want to wire up directly to the wind and solar farms, and build their own distribution. The Iris government is evaluating the privatization of power lines. "At present, only the state-owned Electricity Supply Board (ESB) can build power lines to connect properties to the grid." Technology repeats this cycle of bundling, unbundling and rebundling. The Climate Change Advisory Council Ireland published their annual review of Ireland's electricity sector today. It sets out a stark reminder of how much we still need to do in terms of planning reform and onshore renewable delivery to even come close to meeting our carbon reduction targets. Right now we are well off the required pace. The recommendations in the report are key to putting us on the right track and so its great to see energy storage highlighted as a key piece of the puzzle! A specific shout for long-duration energy storage (LDES) is in there which will "play a key role in Ireland meeting its decarbonisation targets while ensuring security of supply." The report also rightly calls out that "the lack of a specific policy for LDES is inhibiting development, and there are no targets for LDES at Government level." It is also noted that a clear support scheme must be developed and communicated to industry, something which ESI has called for. Earlier today ESB Networks announced that there are now over 100,000 microgenerators connected to Ireland’s electricity network. This is a significant milestone with 20,000 connections delivered in the past six months. These have cumulatively added over 400MW of clean energy onto Ireland’s power system. My colleagues are processing 750 applications per week.  As ESB Networks MD Nicholas Tarrant noted, these 400MW of microgeneration connections complement a further 800MW of larger scale solar connected in recent years. All of this has been achieved on a network that was not originally designed for 'two way' power delivery. Historically, electricity has been generated at large power generation stations and delivered 'one way' to points of demand. The enhanced flexibility enabled by electricity networks to allow users to safely import and export power - depending on need and availability - is a significant technical achievement. As we electrify ever more domestic, industrial and transportation processes, society will need to embrace and support the roll out of the infrastructure that will be required to enable this electrification. This means welcoming and enabling wires, substations and - where appropriate - pylons to safely deliver power to you, your neighbours and your community. In this way, 1. Housing estates will be more easily connected, 2. Investors will continue to be assured of power availability, 3. Farmers will more easily be able to upgrade their power needs to meet enhanced demand and 4. Our wider power system will be decarbonised ever more quickly...
