Lincoln's repeater, also called Lincoln's rifle,^[1] is a unique weapon in Fallout 3.

Background[]

A 19th-century Henry repeating rifle that was once owned by Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States of America,^[1] at some point prior to the Great War, the rifle was loaned to the Museum of History in Washington, D.C. where it remained displayed for the next 200 years after the nuclear apocalypse.

Characteristics[]

A high-powered lever-action rifle chambered for .44 Magnum rounds, thus making it unique as the only rifle to use that ammo type in the game. Lincoln's repeater is also the strongest single-shot, precision rifle in the game despite only having a x2 critical multiplier and a very slow rate of fire. While it lacks a scope, it also has 0 spread (perfect accuracy), meaning one's accuracy at long range can be maintained by ignoring the bugged scope auto-aim. It also has a magazine capacity of 15 rounds and is very effective at long range in V.A.T.S.

Durability[]

Lincoln's repeater can fire a total of about 400 rounds, the equivalent of 33 reloads, from full condition before breaking.

Variants[]

• Hunting rifle - the standard variant found throughout the Capital Wasteland.
• Ol' Painless - a unique variant with a higher fire rate, and deals more damage, but is less durable.
• Lever-action rifle - a non-unique variant physically identical to Lincoln's repeater save for the textures.
• Backwater rifle - a unique variant of the lever-action rifle.

Location[]

The weapon is located in the Museum of History. To find it, enter the Museum of History, go through the lobby and enter the room with the statue of a wooly mammoth, left of the skull hanging over the entrance to Underworld. Inside this room, next to the statue of the wooly mammoth, are some doors that lead to the Museum of History lower halls. Go through these doors. Next, go to the top of the stairs into a room with several broken display cases, and in the back left corner of the room will be a door that leads to the Museum of History offices.

After entering the Museum of History offices, go to the top of the stairs. Take a left and then a right. Go to the end of the hall, through the prison door (Very Easy lock) and into a big room with a turret and a staircase. Go up these stairs. At the top of the staircase, there is a large hole in the wall. Go through the hole, and in the back left corner of the room are the body of a dead raider on the ground, a copy of Chinese Army: Special Ops Training Manual and a display case with Lincoln's repeater inside.

Related quests[]

• Lincoln's Profit Margins: The rifle can be sold to Leroy Walker, who will destroy it to erase Lincoln's legacy; Hannibal Hamlin, who will equip and use it to kill slavers; or Abraham Washington, who will keep it in his museum. Selling the rifle to one of the three will result in it becoming unobtainable as a weapon from then on.

Notes[]

• The weapon visibly ejects bottlenecked rifle casings despite being chambered for Magnum rounds.
• The rifle's hammer incorrectly fires in double action.
• The Lincoln's repeater paint, a cosmetic skin for the lever action rifle in Fallout 76 that replicates the receiver inscriptions on Lincoln's repeater, was included as part of an Amazon Prime Gaming bundle from November 2022 to February 2023.

Behind the scenes[]

• The in-game weapon is based on a real-world customized Henry rifle gifted to President Abraham Lincoln by the New Haven Arms Company in 1862; the intention was to influence the President to adopt the rifle model as standard-issue for the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. The real-world rifle is currently displayed in the Smithsonian Institute. The in-game model differs slightly from the real version, being fitted with a wooden handguard (however, some HUD icons omit this).^[2] The in-game weapon's use of .44 Magnum ammunition is also purely for gameplay purposes as a rifle of its design would be completely incapable of firing modern ammunition without extensive modification.
• Lincoln's repeater was originally intended to specifically use the .44 caliber center fire ammunition before that ammo type was cut from the game.
