Black July is the commonly used name of the pogroms starting in Sri Lanka on July 23 1983. The looting and killing of Tamils came after a LTTE attack on government soldiers in Jaffna where 13 of the soldiers got killed. Around 1.000 Sri Lankan Tamils are believed to be killed in the riots, more than 20.000 houses destroyed and hundreds of thousand Tamils fled the island. Black July is also seen as the start of full scale war between the LTTE and the government.
