The Mob Squad is a nickname that was officially used by the Rams of the National Football League during both their last season in St. Louis and their first seasons back in Los Angeles. The team only used the moniker in official branding and merchandising from 2015 to 2018,[1][2] but many fans[3][4][5] and third party media outlets[who?] still use the term to refer to the team to this day,[citation needed] as some of the core players have remained on the roster. Numerous fans[who?] have adopted the name to refer to fans of the Rams as a whole.

Players

Aaron Donald has been the definitive leader of the Rams defense throughout the Mob Squad era.
Jared Goff led the Rams to an NFC Championship title in 2018.

The Mob Squad era was defined[citation needed] by defensive tackle Aaron Donald, the team's 2014 first-round selection who has won multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards and is widely considered the best defensive player in the league;[6][7] quarterback Jared Goff, selected first overall in the 2016 draft with multiple Pro-Bowl selections who served as the offensive leader until being traded in 2021; and Todd Gurley, the team's 2015 first-round selection and star Pro-Bowler running back until his 2019 departure. The Rams have also been home to many other notable players during this period, such as Cooper Kupp, Brandin Cooks, and Robert Woods, among others. The Mob Squad has defined the period of transition from St. Louis as well as the quick rise to prominence the team experienced in Los Angeles under head coach Sean McVay.[8][9][10][11] The naming also extends to fans of the Rams,[12][13][14] primarily used by multiple booster clubs around Southern California.

Though the Rams have not utilized the moniker since the 2019 season; multiple fans of the team have used the term 'MobSquad' in naming their booster clubs.[21][22] During the 1980s; Rams fan Lance Goldberg sought to create a similar iteration of the famous Cheesehead trend of Green Bay Packers fans wearing a block of cheese, though Wisconsin is famous for its dairy industry while watermelons do not have the same connection to Los Angeles.[23] A majority of Rams fans utilize the moniker to refer to the fans as a whole, given Los Angeles' lengthy history in the film and music industry; a large amount of celebrities have shown strong support for the team as well.[24] Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has been another longtime supporter of the team, even naming his son Roman in honor of former Rams' quarterback Roman Gabriel.[25] Actor Terry Crews is a famous fan of the team, with his connections with the franchise originating from the early 1990s in which he was drafted by the Rams during his brief NFL career.[26][27] Actor Danny Trejo recalls sneaking through the fence at the Los Angeles Coliseum to watch numerous Rams games as a child.[28][29][30] In addition to Trejo, numerous celebrities such as Kendrick Lamar, Bryan Cranston, or Taran Killam are often spotted at the Rams' training camp in Irvine, California.[31][32]

Notable fans

Controversy

As is similarly the case with Los Angeles Sports fans (particularly the Dodgers), Rams fans have developed a minor notoriety[citation needed] for skirmishes and fights since their return in 2016. Though not as notorious for violence as their rival 49ers,[78][79] their fans have similarly been criticized for rowdy behavior at home games, primarily aimed at division rivals such as the 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.[80]

  • On August 13, 2016; the Rams hosted the Dallas Cowboys for their first preseason game in Los Angeles since 1994, however; the environment began to devolve as fans engaged into a large brawl in the stands as three individuals were arrested after a Cowboys fan was hospitalized from his injuries in the melee.[81] Another fight was recorded near the 20 yard line at the Coliseum, though no arrests were made in response.[82]
  • During the Rams' first regular season game after returning to Los Angeles on September 16, 2016; numerous fights broke out at the LA Coliseum during their matchup against the rival Seattle Seahawks. No police reports were filed but phone video recorded an altercation between a Rams fan and a Seahawks fan escalating as a 9 year old Rams fan was unintentionally knocked to the ground.[83][84][85]
  • On August 20, 2018; during a preseason game between the Rams and the Oakland Raiders in Los Angeles, numerous fights broke out between the Rams and Raiders fans, resulting in two arrests.[86][87]
  • On September 27, 2018; the Rams hosted the Minnesota Vikings for the Rams' first Thursday Night Football matchup from Los Angeles. Shortly after halftime, a large altercation took place in the upper seats as a Rams fan began shouting at a female Vikings fan, leading him to punch her in the face; escalating the situation into a large brawl.[88][89]
  • On August 24, 2019; a fight broke out during the Rams' preseason game against the Denver Broncos. Cell phone video recorded three female Rams fans attacking a woman wearing a Denver Broncos jersey.[90]
  • Tensions ran high between the Rams and Saints during their week 2 matchup following the controversial 2018 NFC Championship Game. Numerous fan fights between Rams and Saints fans were recorded; security were later joined by LAPD officers in escorting two male Rams fans out of the Coliseum.[91]
  • On December 1, 2019; a large fight broke out between Rams fans and Cardinals fans during the Rams' Week 13 matchup in Arizona. A female Rams fan was recorded on video kneeing a woman in the face wearing a Cardinals jersey. The fight then escalated as the two fell over the row of seats before security attempted to defuse the issue.[92]
  • During a Rams-Chargers preseason game on August 14, 2021; A Rams fan was escorted out of SoFi Stadium after throwing several punches at a Chargers fan, with the fan later suffering a broken nose.[93][94] Another fight broke out closer to the field level as fans began throwing drinks at one another.[95]
  • Another fight broke out during the Rams' home opener against the Chicago Bears on September 12, 2021. Three Rams fans engaged into a large fight with a Bears fan in a stadium restroom following the game.[96][97]
  • During the Rams' Monday Night Football matchup against the Tennessee Titans on November 7, 2021; a Titans fan was punched in the face by several Rams fans and thrown down a series of stairs in the stadium's upper deck.[98][99]
  • Following the Rams Wild Card victory against the division rival Arizona Cardinals; numerous Rams fans began attacking a Cardinals fan outside of a concession stand as he attempted to leave the stadium.[100]
  • The Rams managed an intense victory over the arch rival San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 NFC Championship game, leading tensions to rise between rival fans around the stadium. Rams fan Bryan Cifuentes was surrounded by numerous intoxicated 49ers fans as he walked to his car following the game. Cifuentes was shoved by Daniel Luna, a 49ers fan from Oakland, California; culminating in Cifuentes throwing numerous punches at Luna, knocking him into the ground before he was transported to the hospital in a coma from his injuries.[101]
  • Numerous Rams fans began rioting across Los Angeles in celebration of the team's victory in Super Bowl LVI on February 13, 2022. Fans ran through the streets, vandalizing city buses, parked cars, and nearby businesses. LAPD reported numerous instances of looting and small fires around Downtown Los Angeles as SWAT units were used to form a riot line near the game festivities at Staples Center. Fans continued to start numerous fires through the streets as some resorted to shooting fireworks at passing cars, creating traffic jams. Police reported that one individual injured in East Los Angeles when fans attempted to rob a gas station.[102][103][104][105]
  • Following the Rams' 2022 home opener loss to the Buffalo Bills on September 9, numerous Rams fans were recorded kicking an unidentified Bills fan in the street by former Bills running back LeSean McCoy and former Eagles' linebacker Emmanuel Acho.[106][107]
  • Rams fans were recorded engaging into a large brawl with Cowboys fans after a home loss on October 9, 2022. A Cowboys fan was thrown up against a truck and kicked repeatedly, another fight was recorded showing a Rams fan being knocked to the ground.[108][109]
  • On December 8, 2022; The Rams managed a week 14 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Numerous Rams fans engaged into a large brawl in the stadium concourse with several Raiders fans exiting the game. Two fans were injured and one was arrested in the skirmish.[110]
