While not an apk, I've used this site to generate random passwords in the past and it looks ok on mobile. If you want to use your own character set (only certain leters/numbers) then you can use this page instead. Random character sequence (talk) 17:59, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Monitoring and charging a battery is mostly a hardware based process. You can not add features by software if the hardware has never been build to be programmable. What you ask is like asking a mechanic to install a switch or a Box in your car to add Autonomous driving. --Kharon (talk) 13:45, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

3d max import

In 3ds Max 2009 I have 3ds files with their skin and material files (mostly jpg) in corresponding subfolders, but when I import a 3ds file all accompanying files are not imported, even though this suggests they should be imported automatically. As the result, skin and materials are not rendered, so I end up with merely a gray model. Searching sucked. What is to be done? Brandmeistertalk 19:16, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

3ds is an very old 3D-fileformat. It was the main format in 3D Studio, even befor Windows was "invented"! "Skin and material" in todays sense/use where never part of it. It was just multiple Textures at best i believe. In today's Version of Autodesk 3ds Max 3ds is still supported and can be imported. You already posted the link about procedure and limitations yourself (knowledge.autodesk). I think you simply expect tomuch from your 3ds file.
Unfortunately geometry fileformats have always been a huge jungle because there are so many competetive Software suits with different focus. Its so wild that even Autodesk's own Products Maya(.ma), 3ds Max(.max)and AutoCAD(.dwg) dont use a shared main fileformat. Even less professional CAD fileformats. Check out the huge List of file formats#Computer-aided design (CAD) for an impression if you like. --Kharon (talk) 13:18, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Bookmarking an URL with Firefox

I want to bookmark my bank's login page, which is at www.mybank.com/login. But www.mybank.com/login is actually a redirect to signin.mybank.com/fe08faa3249e3ca16002/Fstate%3DhashArgs%2523%26isauthcode%3Dtrue which presents two problems:

1. The redirected page is a private page that expires after a few minutes

2. Its URL is long and unsightly

Problem 1 stops me from being able to bookmark the login page since the URL becomes invalid after a few minutes. Is there way to get Firefox to simply bookmark www.mybank.com/login and not the destination page? Scala Cats (talk) 19:22, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

I can not currently have Firefox but when you are adding a bookmark there should be an opportunity to edit the url. Ruslik_Zero 20:34, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
My Firefox 54.0 redirects www.mybank.com/login back to www.mybank.com. So I hovered over red Login there and chose "Personal" in the dropdown menu. The resulting page https://cibng.ibanking-services.com/EamWeb/Account/Login.aspx?orgId=088_052100987&FIFID=052100987&brand=088_052100987&appId=CeB&FIORG=088 could be then bookmarked and opened normally. Brandmeistertalk 20:56, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
In the Firefox menu, select Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks. Then in the left pane, right click on the bookmark folder where you want to add the bookmark. Select New Bookmark, copy your bank's URL to the Location text box and type the name you want it to have in the Name text box. CodeTalker (talk) 23:43, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Petya (malware)

I know very little about IT so please be patient with me. As you might know Petya has spread globally and hit hard in some countries. But hasn't Microsoft released patches after WannaCry hit? Hadn't the infected computers been patched properly, or is Petya exploiting a different vulnerability? --BorgQueen (talk) 07:46, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Kaspersky and others have said that its different to Petya, Kaspersky are calling it NotPetya. - X201 (talk) 07:52, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
The biggest difference is that the spread is mostly e-mail based (more traditional for ransomware). It only uses the WannaCry style when spreading in your local network (WannaCry spread to everything it could find, internet or local network alike). For the spreading by e-mail it apparently uses some vulnerabilities in Office products. Most people seem to agree that it is either a Petya variant, or a new virus that liberally took a large part of petya and reused it. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:36, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Microsoft actually released patches for the exploit used by Wannacry befor it started to infect computers. So that was not Microsofts fault but the fault of users who did not update their Operatingsystem. However Microsoft's update system had and still has some faults (like endless update loop) that force users to disable the automatic update and then keep their Operatingsystem up to date manually. Ofcourse many fail to do so, simply because they forget to check every month at "Patch Tuesday". And thus so many computers became easy prey. --Kharon (talk) 12:41, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Actually before Wannacry Microsoft hadn't publicly release patches for unsupported operating systems like XP. These were available, but only to customers who paid for continuing support. That said, most affected operating systems were supported versions of Windows which had public patches available. Nil Einne (talk) 14:50, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Shared email

When services people from large companies send me an email, sometimes it's from a shared address like sales@company.com. Let's say Bob emails me from sales@company.com, and I quote his message in my reply to sales@company.com. Bob is one among hundreds of sales people at his company, when Bob checks his email, does he see every email addressed to sales@company.com? Or are the emails somehow automatically sorted to arrive at the right recipient? In this case the quoted message could help the sorting process, but I could have easily just written an email "from scratch" to Bob, saying "Hey Bob, here's the info you wanted", and directed it at sales@company.com, in which case there's little information to help proper sorting (there could be 10 Bobs at this company). Scala Cats (talk) 20:14, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

It probably won't get through to him. Actually, if you try it, you may very well find it is "returned as undeliverable", since that address does not accept mail. I find it incredibly annoying when they send me emails like this, making it impossible to maintain a conversation with one person. They have the philosophy that any salesperson can answer your Q's, but this really isn't so, as many Q's require follow-ups. I also find the salespeople don't really care much if their answer is any good, if they know they will never talk to you again. StuRat (talk) 21:55, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
It depends very much on the configuration of company.com's email system. In a small company, sales@ may simply be an alias for a single person, or for a distribution list, or it may be a shared account that all the sales staff have on their email client. In a larger enterprise (or an organisation that does a lot of email) it may go to a customer relationship management system which can route it to any number of complex groups of individuals or to a web system where it's dealt with by whomever is assigned email-wrangler duties at that time. If you explicitly reply to an email from Bob, your email client will add an RFC 2822 in-reply-to header field, with a Message-ID connecting your reply back to the original email from Bob. The CRM at company.com may chose to use this to preferentially route the email back to Bob, on the basis that he's the best person to deal with it. At worst it should be able to give the person answering the context of the email (Bob's original email and hopefully - if the references field is also set - the whole thread) allowing them to pick up where Bob left off. -- Finlay McWalter··–·Talk 22:34, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
The most simple way is, to have the mail server copy all incoming mails to an backup address to cover handling failures. Then have the users from sales department get the new mails. Retrieving mails, the first gets them all. Have the server protocol over the pop3 requests. For larger companies, use a ticket system or crm system which retrieves the mails and does the protocol and automatic sorting jobs. --Hans Haase (有问题吗) 08:24, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Software apps

Ever since I have had my Smart Phone, I’ve done thorough search in the “Google Play Store”, almost all the desired software(s) look the same with different interface(s). I have also downloaded many software apps, and been unhappy since the first time I acknowledged two battery apps providing different results… I need serious help now from you, for the following:

1) My Smart Phone facilitates ‘fast charging’, ‘full charging’ and ‘trickle charging’, therefore I require a ‘battery monitoring software’ this is accurate and appropriate. 2) ‘Speed Booster’. 3) ‘RAM Booster’. 4) ‘Optimizer’. 5) An app that has the ability to display and close unwanted apps that opens up every time I turn my phone on.

Please refer me to reliable app(s) that I could stay with for some time.

116.58.200.78 (talk) 16:15, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Android phones include a battery level notification which is normally visible at the top of the screen. Can you see the battery charge level by looking there? If you are having problems with unwanted apps that open as soon as you turn on the phone, the most comprehensive solution is a factory reset. This will restore the phone to its condition when you bought it, but might delete your personal information such as photos, text messages etc. You should transfer them to a computer beforehand. Or if you prefer, you can try installing an antivirus software and running a full scan with it. Personally, I use Sophos Free Antivirus and Security. Please post the exact make and model of the phone if you need more help. 95.245.147.50 (talk) 20:15, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
This is apparently the user who keeps asking for APKs. I doubt that any form of antivirus or security will help when APKs are being installed directly onto an apparently rooted phone. I know that the question states that the user uses the Google Play Store, but we have months of "give me an APK that does ...." requests, which suggests otherwise. 209.149.113.5 (talk) 12:48, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Using Applescript to autosubmit iTunes password prompts

So iTunes on my Mac has just popped up another "session expiry" password prompt, for no obvious reason. Since my music still plays, I guess this is about authorisation to download purchases I make on other devices. Which is a permission I already granted, and I really don't want to ever expire. A quick Google hasn't turned up a way to stop this behaviour. Is there a way to get rid of this nuisance permanently, either by editing a library file to extend session time past the heat death of the universe (which I suspect I'd have found by now if it was possible) or by using a script to autosubmit the password? I guess the script would need to be running 24/7 in the background, watching for the unwanted password prompt. Can I do that with Automator? I am aware of Applescripts and Automator but I've never used them before. Happy to follow instructions and learn from the beginning. 95.245.147.50 (talk) 19:38, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

HTML input element array

When an HTML input element is set to the number type, there are these little up/down arrows that you can click to change its value[2]. How do I make those arrows bigger? I tried using CSS to set the height the input box to very large, but the arrow stayed the same size [3](which is to say, freaking tiny). Scala Cats (talk) 15:33, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

The little arrows aren't standard (yet). So, every browser implements them in a different way. This article is a couple years old, but it is almost entirely up to date. You can see that there are many tricks required to simply get the numeric input boxes to look remotely similar from browser to browser. 209.149.113.5 (talk) 15:49, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I don't actually need the box to appear consistent from browser to browser; I'm fine with whatever the browser makers choose to go with. I don't even need the up/down arrows to show on every browser. If they don't show up, it's fine. I just want to make sure that when they do show up, they don't up so damn tiny. My preference is: big arrow > no arrow >= tiny-ass arrows. Currently I'm getting tiny-ass arrows on every browser. Scala Cats (talk) 17:47, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
If it helps, the buttons are actually called spinners. WebKit gives limited access to them in CSS with "input[type=number]::-webkit-outer-spin-button" and "input[type=number]::-webkit-inner-spin-button". It is possible that your browser will let you change the size, border, color, etc... I can't test it at the moment because I'm on a public computer in the break room - no ability to create a test web page and open it. 209.149.113.5 (talk) 18:25, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Adobe Flash in Chrome

Has Chrome recently changed how it deals with Flash? I'm suddenly getting "Plugin Blocked" notifications when I try to play certain games (Crossword, Trivial Pursuit) at pogo.com. I have similar problems at Miniclip.com (and at least one other site) using both Firefox and Edge, which have only manifested within the last six months (I think). I find Windows 10 to be so much more difficult to control and configure than previous Windows versions (which I've been using personally and professionally for some 20 years) that I've given up on the problem, but I'll be immensely grateful if anyone can supply a viable solution here. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.122.58.120 (talk) 19:59, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

a few questions regarding using Twitter

I'm reloading the following questions, after raising them yesterday in the 'reference desk', wrongly.

  • It seems that there's no way to contact Twitter for any sort of direct appeal or questions, eventhough, sometimes, it's very necessary, and even expected. Is it so ? There must be a way, afterall !
  • E.g., I want to change my username from a current, say, @aaaaaaaa to another, chosen by myself - how can this be done ?
  • Suppose I wish to make a personal contact with someone there - how can this be done ? Unlike Facebook, and, of course, Wikipedia, there's no way to make a personal contact directly (email address or otherwise), or am I wrong ?
  • Is it possible to be followed by a 'hidden' follower ? I ask that because, since tomorrow, the counter gives a count which is higher than the actual number of followers (which can visually be seen).
  • How can I set a button of 'tweet to aaaaa', just under 'photos & videos' (and other possible tools) ? בנצי (talk) 08:33, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Have you tried Twitter Support, or looked at The Best Way to Contact Twitter Through Email Support or even just Google? CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 15:20, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I did - I tried what's included in your 1st link. Thank you. They don't include direct, free contact, and when having an issue that isn't included in their prepared categories, one gets stuck in the air. I wasn't aware of your 2nd link - it's helpful, indeed. Are you sure about the 3rd link ? It doesn't seem to related. בנצי (talk) 15:24, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
If they do lack a way to rename your account, you could just create a new name, and notify your old followers of the change. As for hidden followers, I suspect that this is Twitter itself, who, along with other Internet giants, has recently committed to watching for terrorists, etc. (Probably by doing a keyword search on your posts and then referring those which seem suspect to human readers to determine if your posts are problematic.) StuRat (talk) 16:00, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
WTF are we talking about hypotheticals when a 5 second internet search should find [4]. I second CambridgeBayWeather suggestion that בנצי really needs to learn to search. This is a very, very basic query which as I've said a 5 second internet search should find the answer to. If you can't, you have little hope of ever doing anything useful on the internet. Nil Einne (talk) 16:35, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
And Twitter following you to watch out for terrorists? WTF? They clearly have a variety of automated monitoring systems in place, much more sophisticated than a simple keyword search, and yes these are backed up by humans moderators where needed. But these do not rely on 'following' you in the form of a Twitter follower. Nil Einne (talk) 16:46, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Likewise another 5 second search will find [5]. Note that I was aware this function was called Direct Message but I intentionally tried both the normal terms for the functionality 'personal message twitter' and 'private message twitter' and both searches work both on Google on Bing. There's really no reason you shouldn't be able to find this out yourself. Nil Einne (talk) 16:39, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't think you know me enough just on the basis of a question regarding a search, let alone my search capabilities. Your attitude is unproportional, overexaggerated & overjudging, instead of just contribute professionally, rather than personally, and, thus, it is unpleasant & insulting. Thank you. בנצי (talk) 17:13, 1 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Laptop with an ARM processor

For the past few years, I've been looking for smartphones, tablets, laptops, and/or miniature computers (i.e., computer sticks, box computers) that conform to few ideals that I have. I've fallen behind on my tech news in the past year or two, so I'm out of the loop. At the moment, I'm looking for an ARM-powered laptop. The Chromebooks with ARM processors don't cut it for me because they have a TPM; it's got nothing to do with lockdown fears, I just don't want one (or rather, I'd prefer the anti-rollback function to be implemented with a normal NAND flash device with lockable regions). It has to be an laptop that, in order of most preferable to least preferable, uses a processor made by Rockchip, Mediatek, or Allwinner. Devices running those processors tend not to have any kind of hardware-based restrictions on running arbitrary code, unlike Exynos and Qualcomm processors.

I'm aware of the Pinebook, but my problem with that is that the first-stage firmware is loaded from eMMC and the device is configured to be able to boot first-stage code from SD and USB. Contrast that with Chromebooks where the first-stage firmware executes in-place from EEPROM and where it isn't setup to boot directly from SD or USB (ARM Chromebooks use processors that can boot from SD and USB, but they just aren't configured to do so).

I've seen a few other possible devices in the past few months, sometimes running Remix or some Android-based OS, but it was all a blur. These were mostly ones made/introduced within the past 2-3 years. Overall, I really don't want one that looks like a netbook (e.g., crap). Any suggestions? — Melab±1 00:33, 2 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
