Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2023 December 8

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Jenks24 (talk | contribs) at 22:43, 8 December 2023 (→‎Template:YJFL: Adding deletion nomination of Template:YJFL.). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Doesn't really navigate anything as the vast majority of these links are simply back to the parent article. And as junior clubs most of them are unlikely to meet WP:N anyway. WP:NENAN. Jenks24 (talk) 22:43, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not convinced we need a navbox for a reserves premiership. WP:NENAN. Jenks24 (talk) 10:20, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I can think of no circumstance in which this template is useful, but am quite prepared for someone to come and prove me wrong.

I found it being used to create the lead sentence of an article - but in that context the link round the name is circular and unnecessary, the dates are wrongly formatted (using b. and d. rather than a bracketed range, and italicised) and the age is inappropriate.

Perhaps it is intended to be an item in a list of names - but the bolding of the name would be inappropriate, and the date range format still unusual.

When I found this in use here, I asked the editor who'd used it whether someone had advised them to use it, and they replied that "I don't think any recommended I use it, I believe it was something I came across organically", so its existence had led to its misuse. Fortunately they hadn't followed the instruction to "subst" it, or I wouldn't have known why the lead of the article was so strangely written.

I enquired a few days ago on the talk page whether anyone knew what this template was for, but have had no response as yet. It seems not to be useful, and to be positively unhelpful in that it produces output which will be against WP:MOS in any context I can think of. If it is indeed useful in some specialist circumstance, then this needs to be very clearly stated in the template documentation, to deter other enthusiastic editors from using it inappropriately.

@Mschamberlain: created the template in 2014, but hasn't edited in the last 18 months so may not be around to comment. @DragonflySixtyseven: protected it in 2019 with comment "too many people editing this who don't understand what its purpose is", so perhaps they know what the purpose is? (I can see what they mean, as several editors had been trying to create biographies on the template page: clearly not its purpose, even if we don't know what the purpose is). @Plastikspork: tweaked it in 2021, but not perhaps in any way connected with its purpose.

The documentation says that this template is "Used to create in-line short versions of {{biography}} including an age at death calculation", but that template is an outline structure for an entire Wikipedia article. I suggest that this "in-line short version" is useless, and the template should be deleted. PamD 10:14, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"perhaps they know what the purpose is" - don't recall, sorry. DS (talk) 14:55, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not enough links to warrant a navbox. * Pppery * it has begun... 01:49, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
