Flint Island is located about {{convert|740|km|nmi mi|abbr=off}} northwest of [[Tahiti]], {{convert|190|km|nmi mi|abbr=off}} south-southeast of [[Vostok Island]], and {{convert|220|km|nmi mi|abbr=off}} southwest of [[Caroline Island]]. The island is about {{convert|2.5|mi|km|1|abbr=off}} long and {{convert|0.5|mi|km|1|abbr=off}} wide at its widest point ({{convert|4|x|0.8|km|mi|1|abbr=on}}). It has a land area of {{convert|1|sqmi|km2|1|abbr=off}} and rises to a height of {{convert|25|ft|m|abbr=off}} [[above sea level]]. The island is surrounded by a narrow fringing reef and with no safe anchorage, landing is difficult.
According to the U.S. Exploring Expedition (February 5, 1841), the island was thickly wooded with [[primeval forest]], however the island is now mostly covered with planted [[coconut]] palms.
