The Collector is the main antagonist of the Doctor Who story "The Sun Makers".

He was portrayed by the late Henry Woolf.

Biography

The Collector was a Usurian, the representative of the mysterious Company on Pluto in the far future. The Company had moved the human race from Earth to first Mars and then Pluto, surrounding it with artificial suns. They had established a slave system, keeping the population subjugated with pacification gas and taxing them relentlessly: Lower classes were not even allowed to see the sky. The Collector operated through humans overseers. Although his natural appearance resembled a lump of seaweed, he had taken on the appearance of a short human confined to a motorised chair.

The Collector accepted Gatherer Hade's report of a growing rebellion, placing guards at his disposal. When Leela was captured and revealed the Doctor was helping the rebels, the Collector was furious, especially since Hade had had the Doctor prisoner but let him go in order to follow him: The Company's records listed the Doctor as a known subversive. The Collector put up a reward for his capture, ordering Hade to pay it. He then ordered Leela killed by being placed in a chamber which would be filled with steam, boiling her alive.

However, the Doctor managed to rescue her, as well as taking over the distribution plant for the pacification gas, while the rebels encouraged the population to revolt. The Collector fled back to his office, using his guards as human shields to make it through the revolution. There, he encountered the Doctor and explained his true nature to him. He intended to wipe out everyone in the city by releasing poison gas but Leela stopped him, cutting him off from the trigger switch. A group of rebels, now joined with the Collector's own guards, arrived to arrest him, but the Collector was distracted by computer readouts showing the Company was bankrupt as a result of the Doctor introducing a growth tax to the system. He reverted to his original form and slithered into a container beneath his chair, where he was imprisoned.
