Celebrating the Best Horror of 2022 with the Hereditary Awards Winners! [Horror Queers Podcast]

Published

Sore Winners and Losers 2.

Back in December, Trace and I opened up voting in the fourth annual “Hereditaries” (named after Toni Collette’s Hereditary omission), our version of the horror Oscars. Our supporters on Patreon helped us narrow down the shortlist in 18 categories and then the public at large, including folks on this site, voted on the winners throughout December 2022.

Going into the voting, blockbusters like Nope and Scream (2022) lead the nominations with 10 each, alongside other popular films like Barbarian, Smile, and Orphan: First Kill.

Now it’s time to reveal who won in the following categories:

  • Best Wide Release
  • Best Indie Release
  • Best Under The Radar Film
  • Best Non-English Language Horror Film
  • Best Horror TV Show
  • Best Queer Horror – New for 2022
  • Best First Feature Director
  • Best Director
  • Best Lead Performance
  • Best Supporting Performance
  • Best Ensemble
  • MVP 2022 – New for 2022
  • Best Creature Design
  • Best Villain
  • Best Sequence
  • Most Painful (Non-Fatal) Injury – New for 2022
  • Best Ending
  • Best Kill

For the first time the acting categories were made gender neutral, which prompted us to expand the number of nominees to 10 in most categories. We received plenty of feedback that the toughest category to vote in was Best Supporting Performance, which makes sense considering the nominees:

  • Hong Chau – The Menu
  • Jamie Clayton – Hellraiser
  • Kate Hudson – Glass Onion
  • Rory Kinnear – Men
  • Jenna Ortega – Scream
  • Keke Palmer – Nope
  • Rachel Sennott – Bodies Bodies Bodies
  • Brittany Snow – X
  • Julia Stiles – Orphan: First Kill
  • Steven Yuen – Nope

Considering we are a queer horror podcast, Trace and I were delighted to shine a spotlight on the exceptional breadth of LGBTQIA nominees this year (PS: we have episodes on all of these titles except Interview with the Vampire, in case you’re interested in how they engage with queerness):

  • Bodies Bodies Bodies
  • Bones and All
  • Chucky S02
  • Exploited
  • Hellraiser (2022)
  • Hypochondriac
  • Interview with the Vampire S01
  • Sissy
  • We’re All Going to the World’s Fair
  • Yellowjackets S01

But enough from us: go listen to the episode, which features breakdowns of who should win vs who we believe will win, as well as the voting percentages in each category (one was literally so close that the winner was decided by 0.5% of the vote!).

Joe is a TV addict with a background in Film Studies. He co-created TV/Film Fest blog QueerHorrorMovies and writes for Bloody Disgusting, Anatomy of a Scream, That Shelf, The Spool and Grim Magazine. He enjoys graphic novels, dark beer and plays multiple sports (adequately, never exceptionally). While he loves all horror, if given a choice, Joe always opts for slashers and creature features.

Celebrating 300 Episodes With the Misunderstood ‘Jennifer’s Body’ [Horror Queers Podcast]

Jennifer's Body

“Needs moar bewbs.”

After kicking September off with discussions of Tim Burton’s classic Beetlejuice (listen) and the modern zombie film The Girl With All the Gifts (listen), we’ve finally reached our 300th episode! To celebrate this milestone, we’re doing a 6-week theme month of Diva/Anniversary worship (running all the way through Halloween), and we’re starting by revisiting a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes so that we can give it the proper, modern HQ treatment: Karyn Kusama‘s Jennifer’s Body (2009)!

In Jennifer’s Body, When popular girl Jennifer (Megan Fox) is possessed by a demon after a botched ritual, she turns a hungry eye on guys who never stood a chance with her before. While Jennifer satisfies her appetite for human flesh with the school’s male population, her best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) learns what’s happening and vows to put an end to the carnage.

Episode 300: Jennifer’s Body (2009) Redux feat. Mae Shults

Put away that Thai food and get ready to be lime green Jell-O because we’re celebrating our 300th episode with a month-long theme of gay icons and anniversaries! And what better way to kick things off than by revisiting a film we covered in one of our earliest episodes? That’s right, it’s time to revisit Jennifer’s Body (2009)! Tagging in for the conversation is Mae Shults, the co-host of the Lady Killers Podcast!

Join us as we begin this super-sized, 3-hour episode (yes, really) by doing a proper deep dive into the film’s production history (our format has changed a bit since we discussed it way back in 2019), including a lengthy conversation about the public shaming Megan Fox endured after she made some comments about Michael Bay.

Plus: script leaks, “Twilight for boys,” a lesson in polyamory, wetties, afterbirth prom dresses and so much more. When all is said and done, we can finally cross out Jennifer’s Body!

Cross out Jennifer’s Body (again)!

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re delving outside of the horror genre (and continuing our diva worship) to discuss Jonathan Glazer’s controversial Nicole Kidman film Birth.
