What is a 30-day trial?

The 30-day trial is designed to give users the opportunity to experience the premium capabilities of Planner.

The trial experience gives users all the benefits of Planner, plus the power of a Project Plan 3 license. Features include Timeline (Gantt) view, dependencies, sprints, custom fields, team workload, managing goals, and Copilot (preview available only in the Planner app in Teams), and more. It also provides a robust project management tool that integrates with other Microsoft apps and services.

After the 30-day trial is over, your data is kept as long as your organization has an entitlement to Planner. This can either be as a part of the Microsoft 365 enterprise plans or premium subscriptions of Planner.

Note that there is an option to extend the trial itself through the admin center on a self-serve basis. A payment instrument must be linked to the admin’s account itself. The admin will not be charged when the trial starts or expires.

How can users in my organization experience the premium capabilities in Planner?

If you are an admin, you can start a trial for your organization. You can also manage license assignments within your organization, including options for managing incoming license requests following the 30-day trial.

If you are a user, you can start a 30-day trial to access premium capabilities in Planner, or in the new Planner app available in Microsoft Teams.

What will a trial of premium capabilities in the new Planner look like for users?

Initiating a trial immediately grants the assigned user access to Project Plan 3, which includes the new Planner premium capabilities such as Copilot in Planner (preview).

The new Planner is being rolled out in phases and is currently available in Microsoft Teams. Later this year, the new Planner experience will be made available on the web. As a result of the phased launch of the new Planner, you can inform your users that they can experience the new Planner in Teams (suggested experience) or on Project for the web.

Users can start a trial from multiple locations. They can do so from the new Planner app in Teams or the Planner web experience. Additionally, license requests can be made from either the new Planner app in Teams, or Project for the web. It is important to note that product and trial mentions in the Microsoft 365 admin center may be listed as either Planner or Project.

Premium licenses are already available in my organization. How do I assign these to users?

If your tenant has premium licenses that are not assigned, a good starting point would be to check if there are users who have shown interest in these licenses via the license request flow in the Microsoft 365 admin center. This way, you’re giving premium licenses to users who need or want them. You play an integral role in helping users receive the proper licenses they need to continue their work!

Otherwise, use the license management process to assign licenses. Learn more: Understand Planner trials and license assignments for administrators
