While growing up, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr all idolized Elvis Presley. They spoke of the way the American artist inspired them to pursue careers in music. Over the years, though, The Beatles grew increasingly critical of Elvis. Harrison thought that one Elvis song The Beatles briefly covered was eye-roll worthy.
George Harrison didn’t like this Elvis Presley song
Early in The Beatles’ time as a band, they sang their own songs and covered tunes by other artists.
“‘Anna’ by Arthur Alexander was on the album, too,” Harrison said in The Beatles Anthology. “I remember having several records by him, and John sang three or four of his songs. (‘Soldier Of Love’ was one; it appears on the BBC recordings.) Arthur Alexander used a peculiar drum pattern, which we tried to copy; but we couldn’t quite do it, so in the end we’d...

A kindred spirit of Luis Buñuel, but one whose existential compulsions are more palpable, Pier Paolo Pasolini perpetually rebelled against moral hegemony, commiserating with outcasts and creating and dying as one. Today, his canon has been co-opted by forces on the right and left, the faithful and the secular. Which is to say, he belongs to us all.

Bleecker Street has nabbed North American rights to first-time feature director Andrew Cumming’s Stone Age-set horror thriller The Origin.
The film from Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 had its world premiere at the 2022 BFI London Film Festival and was nominated for five British Independent Film Awards, winning one in the best breakthrough performance category for Safia Oakley-Green (Sherwood, Extraordinary). The script was written by Ruth Greenberg (Run), with Escape Plan Productions’ Oliver Kassman (Saint Maud) producing.
Bleecker Street is planning a fall/winter theatrical release, it unveiled on Tuesday as the Cannes Film Festival market was set to open.

Can you really eat the rich when a hundred-billion-dollar corporation is footing the bill? It’s the unavoidable question eating away at the recent mainstream wave of anti-capitalist media, from Squid Game and The White Lotus to last week’s culinary comedy-thriller The Menu. It feels especially apt, though, when talking about Knives Out. The sequel rights to Rian Johnson’s 2019 murder mystery, where the decent and just are pitted against the monied and morally corrupt, were acquired from Lionsgate by Netflix in 2020 for an eye-watering 469m. But, to his credit, Johnson seems fully aware of the irony.
While 2019’s Knives Out was a leaner, meaner beast, rife with resentment towards liberal hypocrisy in the Trump era, its sequel Glass Onion shakes off some of its internal hypocrisy. It’s a film that’s lighter, brighter, and far more straightforwardly comic in approach, trading its predecessor’s shadowy, creaky Massachusetts...

Netflix’s new original Marilyn Monroe movie, Blonde, marks the streaming service’s first Nc-17 rated movie, due to its graphic depiction of sexual assault (as well as a point-of-view shot of a fetus in the womb). The Motion Picture Association’s most severe rating has long been known as a both a box office killer and a publicity gift, but this movie from director Andrew Dominik doesn’t have to worry about theater tickets.
Blonde will, after all, be seen primarily by people at home via Netflix, and the movie’s grim and gorgeously-shot story is shaping up to be a critical lightning rod, bringing it all sorts of added attention. But will it bring more prestige to the Nc-17 rating’s long and controversial legacy?
Below is a small collection of the most infamous—and therefore must-see—Nc-17 movies.

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.
At some point in time, January got the reputation for being a wasteland for film releases of sorts, but even back during the 2000s, we were still getting a smattering of quality genre films during that month: Walter Hill’s Supernova in 2000, The Mothman Prophecies...

Queen Elizabeth II, the queen, her majesty, the reigning monarch of the UK, is a woman of many names and titles. Her royal highness might be known around the world for ruling the United Kingdom for 67 years, but we bet you don't know all of the adorable nicknames her family calls her behind the gates of Buckingham Palace.
For starters, there is Lilibet. This is one of the more well-known nicknames that the queen has. It was her nickname growing up and is thanks to her father, King George VI, who took it from his daughter's original name for herself. According to The New York Times, when Elizabeth was about 2 years old, she couldn't pronounce her own name, so she called herself "Tillabet." This later became "Lisabet" or "Lilliebeth" before her father began calling her "Lilibet," which eventually stuck.
In fact, when it comes to signing her Christmas cards, she has three different sign-offs.

After breaking out with his low-budget horror film Mama in 2013, director Andy Muschietti rocketed to the big time by directing 2017’s It, which adapted the child-centric storyline in Stephen King’s sprawling 1986 novel. Happy September, dear readers! The best time of the year is upon us, where the weather is getting cooler, kids are back in school, and we have a brand new batch of movies to get excited about coming to both the big and small screens throughout the next few months.
In September, we’ve got It Chapter Two, Satanic Panic, Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell, Bliss, Villains (one of my absolutely favorite films of 2019 thus far), Haunt, Freaks, Artik, Ad Astra, and so many more films on the docket, which should get you primed for Halloween season.
Then, October kicks off with the already polarizing Joker, followed up by the animated Addams Family movie, Along Came the Devil 2, Mary, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite (my most anticipated movie of the fall season), Robert Egger’s The Lighthouse, Trick from Patrick Lussier, Zombieland 2, and Travis Stevens’ The Girl on the...

Guillermo del Toro is widely considered a modern master of the horror genre, so it would have been pretty neat to see the filmmaker pop up in an unexpected moment during what is arguably the year’s biggest horror release, “It Chapter Two.” Andy Muschietti recently confirmed to /Film he got very close to landing del Toro for a cameo appearance in the “It” sequel but timing just wasn’t on their side. Del Toro’s role would have been a janitor that young Ben Hanscomb (Jeremy Ray Taylor) runs into while running away from Pennywise in one of the film’s many flashback sequences.
“I’m very ambitious when it comes to cameos,” Muschietti said. “It’s my best trait as a director. I wanted Guillermo in the movie. Guillermo del Toro. We were this close. He was going to play the janitor that Ben runs into when he’s running away from Pennywise.

I’ve got three new trailers to share with you today for Hideo Kojima's upcoming crazy looking video game Death Stranding. These are actually more likes clips from the game rather than trailers. They each offer us insight regarding different aspects of the game.
In the near future, mysterious explosions have rocked the planet, setting off a series of supernatural events known as the Death Stranding. With spectral creatures plaguing the landscape, and the planet on the verge of a mass extinction, it’s up to Sam Bridges to journey across the ravaged wasteland and save mankind from impending annihilation.
The first clip specifically spotlights the character Mama and features a ghost baby; The "Ludens Fan" that features Geoff Keighley himself and Norman Reedus’ character taking a piss; and then there’s "Bridge Babies" or BBs, as in the Bb Pod/artificial womb the main character carries around in the game.

“I think in the history of ‘America’s Got Talent‘ that was the worst live performance I’ve ever seen,” declared Simon Cowell after seemingly everything went wrong for danger act Nick & Lindsay during Tuesday’s Quarterfinals 2 episode. The dynamic duo took the stage hoping to right their previous wrongs, which included off-key singing and missed knife throws. Unfortunately, their act actually got worse as they performed live at the Dolby Theatre. Will America vote Nick & Lindsay through to the Season 14 Semifinals? Watch the “Agt” performance video above, read the judges’ comments below and then make your predictions before Wednesday’s results episode.

Chris Klafford burst onto the “America’s Got Talent” scene in a big way last month with his viral audition of “Imagine.” Unfortunately, the Swedish singer returned to perform live during Tuesday’s Quarterfinals 2 episode and received mixed reviews from the panel of judges. His original song “Cold at the Altar” didn’t give Simon Cowell the same “emotional connection” as his previous performances, while all Howie Mandel could praise was Chris’ “amazing hair.” Will America vote this act through to the Season 14 Semifinals? If the first trailer for “It: Chapter 2” didn’t freak you out, then Warner Bros. official trailer has arrived to do the trick. The upcoming sequel to the $700 million horror hit “It” brings Pennywise face to face with some star power, as the adult members of the Losers’ Club are played by the likes of Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, and James McAvoy. The rest of the group is played by Jay Ryan, Isaiah Mustafa, James Ransone, and Andy Bean.
“It: Chapter 2” picks up 27 years after the events of the first movie. The story centers around the grown members of the Losers’ Club returning to their hometown of Derry, Maine, after It/Pennywise comes back stronger and crueler than ever. Aside from the Losers Club members, “It: Chapter 2” also stars Xavier Dolan, Jake Weary, and Jess Weixler.
For Skarsgård, returning to his iconic role of Pennywise the Clown proved harder than expected.

When I was 11, my parents did the unthinkable: they took me on vacation to Hawaii instead of letting me stay home in Ohio to go to the Spice Girls concert with my best friend. After 21 years of pain and suffering from missing seeing my idols live in concert (oh the horror!), I finally got to make my dreams come true when I saw the group perform on their reunion tour this year in London. The concert was everything 11-year-old Hedy dreamed of and more, and that is not even an exaggeration.

Singer Mel B, who cannot see on her left side after botched laser surgery, was rushed to a hospital after losing vision in the right eye, raising fears for the Spice Girls tour.
According to thesun.co.uk, sources at London's Moorfields Eye Hospital said she arrived wearing an eye-patch and said: "I can't see anything - I am totally blind."
They added: "She was clearly in a lot of pain."
Mel B, known as Scary Spice, 43, was transferred to Luton and Dunstable Hospital's ophthalmology department.
As soon as she could see again, she left, against doctor's orders, to rejoin the group rehearsing for the tour.
She will require medication and further intensive treatment, likely to include more hospital visits.
A source said: "Mel was in a really bad way. The other girls and their managers were really worried.
