British director Paul Andrew Williams’ next film is psychological thriller The Nest, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Andrea Riseborough.
Paul Andrew Williams is synonymous with gritty, low budget British filmmaking. Bursting onto the scene in 2006 with London to Brighton, he quickly built up an impressive filmography including showcasing the glorious double act of Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith in horror comedy The Cottage, home invasion horror Cherry Tree Lane and a change of direction with sweet musical comedy Song For Marion, which starred Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave. He returned to his roots in 2021 with dark thriller Bull, a revenge story featuring a powerhouse performance by Neil Maskell. It’s a tough watch but a terrific film, it is currently streaming on Netflix.
Williams will with Redgrave for his next film The Nest, the synopsis reads as follows:

While Christmas tends to be the default setting for winter horror, 2008’s The Children makes a good argument for terror around the New Year. Many folks would expect leisure and fun after a busy Christmas. However, the chance for relaxation is out of the question in Tom Shankland’s movie. Something terrible has suddenly happened to the kids, and something even worse awaits their parents.
Spending New Year’s Eve with the ‘rents and their relatives is undesirable for most teenagers, but Casey (Hannah Tointon) will have definitely wished for more boring family time after her younger siblings and cousins turn on her and every other grownup nearby. No one past the age of puberty is safe here. As Casey and her closest kin gather at a remote house in the country — a decision that always proves to be as unwise as it is clichéd — The Children steadily reveals its unusual threat.

Dick Van Dyke isn’t the only star of the classic 1964 Walt Disney musical fantasy “Mary Poppins” who appears in the current sequel “Mary Poppins Returns,” which stars Emily Blunt taking over from Julie Andrews as the practically perfect nanny. Karen Dotrice, who played Jane Banks in the original film, has a cameo as a woman walking down Cherry Tree Lane and asks grown-up Jane (Emily Mortimer) for directions.
Dotrice, 63 and the mother of three, is the daughter of the late British acting couple, Kay and Roy Dotrice. She made her acting debut on the London stage as a four-year-old in “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” which starred her godfather, the legendary Charles Laughton. And it just so happened a casting director looking for a little girl to star in Disney’s 1964 “The Three Lives of Thomasina” caught her performance. And soon she was making the movie with Matthew Garber, who...

If you haven't already heard, Mary Poppins, the world's favorite nanny, is back. In Mary Poppins Returns, Emily Blunt plays the titular role once held by the lovely Julie Andrews. She stars across a practically perfect cast that includes Lin-Manuel Miranda (aka Alexander Hamilton himself) and Ben Whishaw, the voice behind feel-good icon Paddington Bear. In the age of reboots, the movie is a sequel as opposed to a revamp. As a flurry of magical news comes out about it, you might be wondering if the film draws from an actual book.

The production designer of Mary Poppins Returns—Disney’s follow-up to a 1964 musical classic—John Myhre knew about the project for at least 10 years, sitting for a long time with the responsibility and opportunity in taking this film on. Discussing it with Marshall on the set of 2009 musical Nine, following collaborations on Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha, Myhre knew he would have to strike a balance between reality and fantasy, between faithful homage to one of the most beloved films of all time, and the breaking of new ground. Set 20 years after Robert Stevenson’s original, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, Mary Poppins Returns picks back up with the Banks children of Cherry Tree Lane, who are now grown up. As Michael (Ben Whishaw) grapples with the loss of his wife and the troubles of the Great Slump, Mary Poppins returns just in time, introducing a new...

Mary Poppins Returns can’t possibly be expected to transcend its historical foundation. It’s been over half a century since the Disney original seeped its way into the collective consciousness. Julie Andrews is all but synonymous with the stern, yet cheerful magical nanny. Songs like “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and other Sherman Brothers’ creations are now musical standards. Hence, any long-in-the-making, Disney-stamped sequel will inevitably be forced to pay homage to the original and re-introduce the concept of Mary Poppins to a new generation. Mary Poppins Returns serves too many cultural and financial masters to be its own beast, so it’s forced to make space in a middle ground circumscribed by nostalgia.
While that’s not necessarily a deal breaker, director Rob Marshall and screenwriter David Magee don’t help matters by tying the film to its predecessor in almost every way imaginable. It’s one thing for...

Mary Poppins Returns captures some of that classic Walt Disney magic thanks in large part to a luminous Emily Blunt.
Can lightning strike the same kite twice? It was the obvious question when Walt Disney Pictures announced it was making a sequel to what Walt himself considered their crowning achievement: Mary Poppins. It appeared even more daunting since someone would have to step into Julie Andrews’ shoes. And yet, against all potential snarky adult cynicism, Mary Poppins Returns does indeed surge with an electricity of yesteryear, gleefully recalling with equal parts nostalgia and genuine love of craft a different, classical handful of Disney magic.
Led by a luminous Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns is obviously engineered to revisit, and frankly remake, the 1964 classic where every child learned the words to “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” but the end result nevertheless feels handcrafted and miraculously sincere. Presented with glamorous pedigree and a lavish production design,...

As with anyone who gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s journey is the result of hard work and inspiration, along with influences and confluences that shaped and continue to shape his life and career.
The writer, composer, lyricist and star of the mega-smash “Hamilton: An American Musical” will be honored Nov. 30 with his own star and has several upcoming projects with roots or connections to his past, beginning in December with Disney’s release of “Mary Poppins Returns.” In the film he plays Jack, a lamplighter and former apprentice of Bert (Dick Van Dyke) from the 1964 “Mary Poppins.”
As far back as he can remember, the original was a staple his parents’ the video collection. “I don’t recall the first time I saw it,” he says. “Because it just lived in our house like furniture, with the other Disney movies.”

Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim once again demonstrated its unrivaled franchise power through Marvel, Lucasfilm, Disney and Pixar, as well as the unique mining of its animated legacy. And, in highlighting its social relevance, the emphasis was on diversity and unity in conquering prejudice and hate.
On Friday, the Expo was ecstatic over the hilarious clip of Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) getting snarky with all of the Disney princesses in “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” (November 21, 2018) — the ultimate Mouse House strut. It was also refreshing to learn that Holly Hunter’s mom, Helen/Elastagirl, will be the star of Brad Bird’s “Incredibles 2” (June 15, 2018), picks up where the last one left off in 2004, with the Underminer (John Ratzenberger) wreaking havoc.
However, on Saturday, Disney wowed them with clips and behind-the-scene footage from “Mary Poppins Returns,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” Star Wars: The Last Jedi, “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “The Lion King.

Mary Poppins Returns just outside London’s famous Buckingham Palace in this fresh batch of set photos for Disney’s fantastical continuation.
Coming to us by way of Metro, up above you’ll get another sneak peek at Emily Blunt in the title role, who picks up the suitcase, magical umbrella and iconic pink hat first donned by Julie Andrews all those years ago. Pitched as a sequel and definitely not a remake – unlike, say, Disney’s recent box office smash, Beauty and the Beast – Mary Poppins Returns is set against the Depression-era London of the 1930s, where Jane and Michael Banks are now all grown up and have children of their own. That doesn’t exempt the Banks siblings from a visit from Blunt’s lovable nanny, though.
And now that filming continues apace in the English capital, these set photos tease a number of extras dressed in period garb.

We just saw our first look at Emily Blunt in Rob Marshall's Mary Poppins Returns a few days ago, but thanks to Twitter user Gordon Harris (via Playbill), we now also have our first glimpse of Lin-Manuel Miranda's lamplighter character, Jack. Additionally, there are a few more set pics that give us a look at Blunt's Poppins from the front (as opposed to the teasing reverse angle in the movie's official first image).

Lin-Manuel Miranda is so big right now that he’s verging on overexposure. Roughly a year ago, hardly anyone knew who the man was. Sure, he’d done some work a lot of us had seen without realizing (he’d done the music for Maz Kanata’s bar in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, among other things), but he wasn’t really a household name until Hamilton hit it big last year. Buzz had been circulating around that musical for some time, but it wasn’t until the album was released to the general public that it really took off.
Miranda had already done work on Disney’s Moana, but he was now a marketable name, and so began the snowball effect of his popularity. It was in 2016 that we also learned that Miranda would be involved in the Mary Poppins sequel, Mary Poppins Returns. While the film isn...

Over the weekend a small corner of our Twitter feed was briefly panicked by the goings on in the City of London. Smoke was pouring out of a part of Cornhill and worried twitter users in the area quickly spread the word that it was, in fact, location filming for Disney’s latest’s franchise revisitation with Mary Poppins Returns.
The Bank of England and the Royal Exchange were important landmarks in the original stories, and in the 1964 film. This time the production team were actually there. See below for some excellent shots, including our first look at Lin-Manuel Miranda in costume. Consider us hyped to the nines.

Emily Blunt stars as Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns. Here's the first image from the production...
With Beauty & The Beast primed to land in UK cinemas in just under two weeks, work is already underway on the next big live action family movie from Disney. And it just happens to be Mary Poppins Returns.
We broke the story that Emily Blunt was in contention for the lead in the film months ahead of those cads at Variety (didn’t stop them claiming it as an exclusive, and refusing to back down, but no, we’re over it). The most important thing though is that the film is happening, filming right now, and for the purposes of this story, the first image from the production has been released.
Into The Woods helmer Rob Marshall is directing this one, and in the image, you can see Emily Blunt in the title role.

Disney has released the first photo of Emily Blunt in the role of Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns. I always thought she was a perfect choice for the role, and after seeing this photo it solidifies the fact that it was inspired casting. Yeah, I know it's just a little photo tease but she looks great, and I'm sure it will spark some excitement among Mary Poppins fans.
The film is currently shooting in London and has a great cast that includes Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Moana), Ben Whishaw (Spectre), Emily Mortimer (Hugo), Julie Walters (Harry Potter films), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins). Even Dick Van Dyke is in the film! He plays Mr. Dawes Jr., the chairman of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. It was also recently announced that Angela Lansbury will play the Balloon Lady, a character from Pl Travers’ original children’s books.

Some Disney fans may have hoped that the House of Mouse would restrict their remakes and reboots to their animated features, but of course, you’d be disappointed. To a company like Disney, any of their films from the past are fair game for exploitation. This isn’t even a slight against the entertainment conglomerate. While, as a film lover, it’s instinct to cringe at the news of all the reboots and remakes that permeate the industry, one can’t deny that great things can be accomplished on the backs of big franchises. All you have to do is look at Marvel, Star Wars, The Dark Knight, and even something like Pete’s Dragon to see that.
It’s that in mind that we’re looking at the concept of Mary Poppins Returns. Yes, the original Mary Poppins is an unparalleled classic (no matter what author Pl Travers thought...

Disney has just released a first look photo from its upcoming musical “Mary Poppins Returns.” The image shows actress Emily Blunt transformed into the titular character of the original sequel to the 1964 classic, which starred Julie Andrews as Poppins.
In the photo, Blunt is wearing a long cobalt-blue coat with ruffles in the back, a burgundy hat, blue gloves and a colorful weekend bag. She seems to be standing on the famed Cherry Tree Lane in London, the same street to which she was blown by the wind some 20 years ago, when she first started caring for the Banks children.

For all of the hustle and bustle swirling around Disney’s slate of live-action fairytales, the Mouse House has spent the past 12 months quietly piecing together Mary Poppins Returns, the follow-up to Robert Stevenson’s 1964 family classic.
Unlike, say, next month’s Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins Returns is very much designed as a sequel to the first, as opposed to an out-and-out remake, with Emily Blunt’s magical nanny poised to pay a visit to the Banks family in 1930s London. Disney announced this morning that this sequel Mary Poppins Returns has gone into production, and the full cast has been confirmed. A more detailed synopsis and a few extra character notes have also been revealed. Despite the beloved nature of the original 1964 film there has been a distinct lack of uproar about revisiting (and recasting) characters dear to generations of children. Perhaps time enough has passed, or the fact that Dick Van Dyke is returning at 91 to appear in the film. Perhaps it is the presence of Hamilton’s own Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has an evidenced ocean of talent and a charm so tangible he could punch through walls with it.
Whatever the case, Disney know exactly what they’re doing. In casting Emily Blunt as the title character, Mary Poppins Returns has been carried on a wave of goodwill thus far. Today production begins at Shepperton Studios here in the UK,...

Two-time Academy Award®–winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks topline Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen. This past month Wamg attended the Saving Mr. Banks press conference where Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell, Jason Schwartzman, Bj Novak, Bradley Whitford, director John Lee Hancock, writer Kelly Marcel and producer Alison Owen discussed making the film, Nanny McFee, and scarring grandchildren with Winnie the Pooh.
When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine.

A fan of Disney's Mary Poppins as an eight-year-old, Kathryn Hughes was given Pl Travers's book. But she found it dull, odd and severely lacking in dancing penguins. As Saving Mr Banks arrives in cinemas, she re-encounters a classic story
Being given a copy of Mary Poppins by Pl Travers for my eighth birthday was both a thrill and, as it turned out, one of the greatest disappointments of my young life. A thrill, because for the last five years I had lived and breathed the Disney version, which had come out in a blaze of glory in 1964. At school I won the unofficial prize for the person who had seen the film the most times (I said eight, although it was actually only six: but in the Disney universe, believing something hard enough is the key to making it come true). I did, though, definitely win the competition for who could say "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" backwards.

Who the hell are Blumhouse Productions? Seriously though, in case you have a low attention span, you might have noticed that Jason Blum has hijacked low budget theatrical horror, and has been giving it noogies in hopes of squeezing some quality genre fare out. For the most part, he’s been successful, at least financially. And, a good majority of what comes out of the studio is pretty good. I hated the first two Paranormal Activity films with a passion, and then Paranormal Activity 3 came along. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the third film, but it made me revisit, and find a new appreciation for the first two films. Then, unfortunately, Pa 4 came along and fucked it all up. The Purge teams Blumhouse up with Michael Bay’s genre production company, Platinum Dunes, as well as Universal Studios. The results are a little mixed, as compared to some previous Blumhouse Productions,...

This summer has offered genre fans two home invasion horror films: The Purge and You're Next (the latter opening August 23rd). And that's just on the theatrical film front. On DVD and VOD, we've also seen the release of a few other titles in the home invasion sub-genre such as Cherry Tree Lane and Home Sweet Home.
So, what is it about this sub-genre that's making it endure? What are filmmakers getting right or getting wrong about it? To answer some of these questions and to dissect a few select home invasion titles, I called upon colleagues Devin Faraci, Evan Dickson and Todd Gilchrist for the latest Choice Cuts group discussion.

Title: Cherry Tree Lane Directed by: Paul Andrew Williams Starring: Rachael Blake, Tom Butcher, Jumayn Hunter, Ashley Chin Running time: 77 minutes, Not Rated Special Features: None Michael and Christine are having a quiet dinner at home while their son is out for the evening. When Michael answers a knock at the door, their lives are changed forever when a trio of violent strangers enters, beat the couple and wait for the son to return home. I’m not even going to bother with a bunch of insults because this movie was awful. For the majority of the hour and 17 minutes I had to sit through a bunch of inane [ Read More ]

Song for Marion is out in UK cinemas today and what feels like a long time ago, I sat down with writer / director Paul Andrew Williams on the set of the movie to discuss where the idea for the movie and how it materialised into a feature-length film. Paul has previously directed London to Brighton, Cherry Tree Lane which are both fabulous but hard-to-watch films. Song for Marion goes in a very different direction but which is guaranteed to make you cry looking at what can happen when a grumpy old man finds himself in a situation where his world is about to be turned upside-down by the terminal illness of his long-term wife.
Song for Marion stars Terrence Stamp, Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Eccleston Gemma Arterton and is guaranteed to make you cry. Our review is up here and you can read my great and frank interview with Director Paul Andrew Williams below.

Director: Paul Andrew Williams; Screenwriter: Paul Andrew Williams; Starring: Terence Stamp, Gemma Arterton, Vanessa Redgrave; Christopher Eccleston, Anne Reid; Running time: 93 mins; Certificate: PG
Growing old gracefully is easier said than done for Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave, especially in a film that borders on patronising the elderly. Tears of sadness and laughter are quite forcefully jerked by writer/director Paul Andrew Williams; thankfully his leads are able to rise above, playing an old married couple whose life together is rocked by cancer and choir lessons.
Initially, Stamp keeps his emotions bottled up as Arthur, except when he's lashing out at his son (Christopher Eccleston) and members of the local old folks' choir presided over by a young teacher, Elizabeth (a rosy-cheeked Gemma Arterton). Arthur is angry most of the time, but even more so when wife Marion (Redgrave) is diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Though Marion is dying, she lives...

Paul Andrew Williams is a director to keep an eye on. While my only exposure to him has been his recent Cherry Tree Lane (review here,) in that film Williams showed me enough talent and understanding of cinema that could make for a most promising film career. His next film, Song For Marion is a divergence from his horror roots. I say that’s good, as it shows Williams wants to challenge himself and stretch beyond his comfort zone. What follows is a conversation I recently had with Mr. Williams about the film, and even how the board game Clue can inspire filmmakers. One of the things that worked in the [ Read More ]

Cherry Tree Lane Directed by Paul Andrew Williams Starring: Rachael Blake, Tom Butcher, Jumayn Hunter, Ashley Chin, Sonny Muslim Runtime: 77 Minutes Films like Cherry Tree Lane are diamonds in the rough. For every horror film that’s released a year, few are actually noteworthy, while most settle for being so-bad-it’s-good (or bad) schlock. Yet when one comes along that shows true talent and ambition, it deserves to be praised. While not a perfect film, Cherry Tree Lane showcases Paul Andrew Williams strong directorial abilities. Williams has turned in a tense, gripping thriller that’s a far cut above the rest. Williams is the reason Cherry Tree Lane works, although he does [ Read More ]
