An ethereal beauty like no other, Eva Green has scooped up multiple roles in innumerable star-studded projects and never once ceased to leave viewers baffled with her tremendous emotional complexity. After starting her acting career through theatre, she debuted in Hollywood in 2003 and didn’t take long to become one of the most sought-after actresses of all time.

Also renowned for playing a Bond Girl in 2006’s Casino Royale, she didn’t hesitate to bare herself to star as the peerless spy’s love interest even though it was only the beginning of her career. This was because, before this film, Green starred in The Dreamers, which had her pulling some risky moves with her co-star to calm her nerves before shooting an intimate scene.

The appeal of Chad Stahelski's 2014 actioner "John Wick" was how lean and simple it was. The titular character (Keanu Reeves) was quietly mourning the death of his wife, trying to recover with the puppy she had bought him. When rowdy Russian gangsters kill the dog during a home invasion, John reactivates, revealing that he was once known as the world's most dangerous assassin. He proceeds to take revenge on pretty much the entire criminal underground. The only fantastical wrinkle in "John Wick" was the Continental Hotel, a specialized high-end crash pad for all the world's well-moneyed assassins. The Continental could provide their clientele with medical attention, high-tech body armor, and however many guns they may need (usually a lot).
When a sequel was demanded, however, the filmmakers had to up the ante by heaping in more and more assassination lore, creating a bizarre, outsize world with complicated rules and an unfollowable mythos.

Measured against recent Toronto Film Festivals, business at TIFF 2024, which wrapped on September 15, was average.
There was one big studio deal: Paramount Pictures snatching up worldwide rights outside of Germany-speaking Europe for Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5, a newsroom thriller on the 1972 Munich Olympics terrorist attacks, which is already being touted a major awards contender. There were a handful of indie pickups, with A24 nabbing Brady Corbet’s buzzy period epic The Brutalist and Andrew DeYoung’s bro-com Friendship starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, and Samuel Goldwyn Films taking North American rights to Nick Hamm’s Medieval actioner William Tell starring Claes Bang. And there was a major streaming acquisition as Hulu snatched up TIFF opener Nutcrackers, a family comedy from David Gordon Green featuring Ben Stiller.
There were also a few deals inked ahead of the festival, with Sony Pictures Classics scooping up key world rights to Laura Piani...

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.
Two out of 2024’s Best Actress nominees were nominated for playing fictional people. The others were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”). However,...

From Italy to Canada and Colorado, the fall festivals unleashed a firehose of new films on the international landscape — the majority of which, as is ever thus, are still looking for buyers.
The Venice, Toronto, and Telluride film festivals all hosted plenty of splashy world premieres that attracted early or quick-to-respond buyers, like A24 with “Queer,” “The Brutalist,” and “Friendship,” TIFF opener “Nutcrackers” (Hulu), “Maria” (Netflix), and “September 5” (Paramount). But there are smaller films — and even some bigger, starrier ones from Naomi Watts in “The Friend” to Jude Law and Ana de Armas in “Eden” — still on the hook for stateside distribution.
While there are still plenty of industry-friendly festivals ahead to help locate buyers, like NYFF and AFI Fest, IndieWire rounds up the best films we saw at the fall fests so far that deserve distribution. Somebody, do something about these 22 titles!

The upcoming spy thriller movie “Ballerina,” starring Ana de Armas, has become an important part of the popular John Wick action series. As plans for another John Wick movie starring Keanu Reeves are uncertain, “Ballerina” plays a key role in continuing this universe of assassins and secret organizations.
Set between previous John Wick films, “Ballerina” focuses on a skilled assassin named Rooney seeking revenge after criminals kill her family. Though few plot details are known, the movie will likely connect to John Wick’s story and provide new context for past events. With uncertainty around a fifth John Wick movie, Reeves’ appearance in “Ballerina” takes on significance as possibly his farewell or setup for a return.
Rumors of a 2025 start for “John Wick 5” were dismissed, leaving fans unsure when or if Reeves might reprise his iconic role. Ambiguity grows from the ambiguous ending of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which seemingly...

Among the current roster of anime and manga series, Spy x Family is one of the most refreshing. It perfectly balances the intense war setting with the lighthearted dynamics between the Forgers. These elements make it one of the anime series which are more compatible with the live-action format. A Spy x Family live-action could be the perfect blend of comedy and action, with the right casting.

It would be completely understandable that Ron Howard, having directed more than two dozen genre-tripping films spanning six decades, would want to shake things up a bit by jumping into something outside his proven comfort zone. And it would be equally logical that the vehicle to take him there would be a certifiably bizarre but true account of a 1920s German philosopher who sets up an experimental society with his lover/disciple on a remote island in the Galápagos, only to have it all implode when opportunists come and crash the party.
But despite all the intriguing possibilities of the concept and a game, international cast including Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl and Sydney Sweeney, Eden, handed its world premiere at Toronto, never finds its happy place. The prevailing overwrought tone lands more cartoonish than satirical, while a protracted running time accentuates the film’s deficiencies.

Roland Emmerich traveled back to 79 Ad for season one of his gladiator drama Those About to Die. For season two, he has dreams of traveling back even earlier.

Ben Affleck has been in the news as often for his romantic relationships as his professional career. He’s dated a who’s who of some of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelorettes and married two. However, Affleck once admitted that during his relationships, he “p****d” off his girlfriends.
Ben Affleck told Playboy he ‘p****d’ off his girlfriends
In 1999, Ben Affleck was interviewed for Playboy Magazine. At the time, the actor was in a relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow.

The highly anticipated film “Ballerina,” set in the world of the “John Wick” franchise, has undergone additional filming that star Ana de Armas says will improve the movie. Though originally planned for summer 2024, “Ballerina” was pushed back to a June 2025 release to allow for reshoots. At face value, you might think a movie about a group of people who leave Europe in the 1930s to go live on the uninhabited Galápagos island of Floreana, simply figuring out life as they go, is just a new twist on a typical survival story. But, in the case of Ron Howard’s “Eden,” it’s actually a true story — and that definitely surprised Sydney Sweeney and her castmates.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, the film also stars Ana de Armas, Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl and more. Sitting down at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design, Sweeney and de Armas both noted that they were stunned to discover the truth of the events.

Ron Howard has always taken pride in being an eclectic filmmaker — in the last 40 years, he has made movies about mermaids, cocoons, auto factories, astronauts, firefighters, newspapers, beautiful minds, cave rescuers, the Grinch, the Da Vinci Code, the Beatles, and Pavarotti. But at the Toronto Film Festival premiere of his latest movie, “Eden,” he declared that the film stands farther apart from his other work than anything he has ever done. He’s right, though not for the reason he thinks.
“Eden,” which is based on events that unfolded 100 years ago on one of the Galápagós Islands, is a difficult movie to characterize. It’s been labeled as a “thriller,” but I would describe it as a misanthropic survivalist “Robinson Crusoe” meets “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” with deranged footnotes by Friedrich Nietzsche. For Howard, the film sure is different. Yet there’s another word for it — the word is terrible.

On paper, there are few filmmakers who seem less-suited to the rigors of a project like Eden than Ron Howard. This is the grim story, after all, of real-life individuals in the late 1920s who were so troubled by the state of humankind that an escape to the Galápagos Islands seemed like the only sensible way out. This is a tale replete with deception, murder, tooth-extraction, one of the more ridiculous childbirth scenes in cinema, and, in what may be a first for Howard, male frontal nudity. (Though my memory of Cocoon is fuzzy.)
Still, Howard deserves credit for taking on a variety of complex projects along with his more audience-friendly efforts. For every The Da Vinci Code or Solo: A Star Wars Story, there is a Frost/Nixon or Rush. (Let’s leave Hillbilly Elegy out of this.) Eden attempts to combine both styles––grit with triumph of the human spirit.

Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) is loathe to repeat anyone else, so when his writer’s block finds him spitting out quotes from bigger, better, far more well-known philosophers, he knows things are going badly. Things have, in fact, been going badly for a very long time, as is prone to happen when someone moves to an uninhabited island and attempts to carve out a new world order. Still, had Friedrich — a very real person — been a bit more comfortable with the idea of repeating someone else, he likely would have found plenty of comfort in Jean-Paul Sartre’s perpetually prescient observation that “Hell is other people.”
Such is the thrust of Ron Howard’s darkly funny “Eden,” a fact-based story that follows what happened after Friedrich and his partner Dora Strauch (Vanessa Kirby) moved to a Galapagos Island after the end of World War I (and the start of...

Toronto film festival: Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney and Ana de Armas fight for supremacy on a remote island in this 1930s-set true story that descends into tiresomely silly reversals
The films of Ron Howard – usually polite, Oscar-aiming true stories such as A Beautiful Mind or Apollo 13 or solidly made, anonymous IP blockbusters such as The Grinch or The Da Vinci Code – have not shown the director to be someone greatly interested in exploring or even showing much awareness of real, down-to-the-core darkness. His All-American persona, as a well-meaning aw shucks nice guy (who now claims shock upon hearing the subject of his 2020 film Hillbilly Elegy might actually not be such an inspiring figure after all) would not make him seem like the perfect match for a nasty and violent tale of the horrors we’re willing to inflict upon each other to get what we want.

Visionary director Ron Howard delivers a psychological thriller like no other with Eden. Premiering in 2024 at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film transports viewers to a remote island in the Galapagos archipelago in the 1930s. There, a handful of troubled souls each seek isolation from the outside world. But what begins as individual pursuits of solitude inevitably leads to conflict.
We meet Friedrich, a self-absorbed German doctor wishing to write in seclusion with his partner Dore. But their remote paradise is disrupted by the arrival of the kindly Witmer couple, Heinz and Margaret, hoping to join Friedrich’s utopian vision. Tensions grow as these clashing personalities collide on the unforgiving island terrain. Just as tensions start to thaw between the families, another interloper, the enigmatic Baroness, arrives with ambitions that threaten each group’s fragile existence.

It seems The Fantastic Four: First Steps has taken a break from filming, with star Vanessa Kirby attending the Toronto International Film Festival to promote her new film, Ron Howard's Eden, which also stars Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney.
The Mission: Impossible actress - who will play Sue Storm/Invisible Woman in the Marvel Studios reboot - was asked for an update on production on the red carpet of the Eden world premiere, and while she didn't share anything particularly exciting, it sounds like things are going very well and "Marvel's First Family" are all getting on as well as one would hope.
“We love each other so much. I’ve been away from them for two days and I miss them," said Kirby. "We’re having such great time together. I’m really hopeful for the movie and Matt Shakman is amazing and Pedro [Pascal] is heavenly.

Jude Law doesn’t want to take all the credit.

Director Ron Howard has always been a fascinating filmmaker. He’s delivered some of the most entertaining American films ever made, like “Apollo 13,” as well as complete and total disasters, like “Hillbilly Elegy.” That makes “Eden,” a solid yet darkly silly historical thriller set on a remote uninhabited island in the Galápagos, such a breath of fresh air. It’s not his greatest work, but it’s still the type of film that you exhale upon seeing as you realize he’s still got some heaters.
Though built around an excellent ensemble cast of Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby and Ana de Armas, it’s Sydney Sweeney who runs away with the whole thing. She doesn’t always give the loudest performance of the bunch, though it’s her subtle looks and a growing agency that turns “Eden” into something more. As the Ron Howard-directed “Eden” made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, a medical emergency interrupted the screening. The film was stopped to allow for someone to be carried out from the front section of the Roy Thomson Hall venue, near the stage.
Howard was in attendance and introduced the movie, alongside members of the cast, including Sydney Sweeney, Daniel Brühl, Ana de Armas and Jude Law.
The announcer said simply, “We are dealing with a medical emergency,” but without disclosing what had happened. The film was restarted shortly afterward.
The film’s stars play a group of Europeans who put down stakes on a previously uninhabited Galápagos island in the 1930s as part of a quest to reshape and restart society as the world approaches war.
The film’s official logline explains, “They and those who follow them believe they’ve found paradise — only to discover that hell is other people.

Ron Howard, the director behind “Hillbilly Elegy” and “A Beautiful Mind,” stressed to Variety the importance of exercising one’s right to vote in this upcoming presidential election in November.
The director stopped by Variety’s Toronto Film Festival Studio to promote his upcoming movie “Eden,” along with the cast, including Sydney Sweeney, Jude Law, Ana de Armas, and Daniel Brühl. There, the director was asked about his previous work adapting current Vice Presidental Candidate Jd Vance’s memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” into the 2020 film starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close. What did Howard think of Vance’s political ascent since adapting his story years ago?
“I have been surprised and concerned by a lot of the rhetoric coming out of that campaign,” Howard said. “There’s no version of me voting for Donald Trump to be President again, whoever the Vice President was. But given the experience that I had then 5, 6 years ago.

Exclusive: It doesn’t happen often, but Ron Howard is here in Toronto today to unveil at the Toronto Film Festival his new film Eden. What’s unusual for the Oscar winner whose films have grossed billions, is that the film is up for grabs for distribution as an acquisition title. Eden might seem a close cousin to his harrowing Thai rescue film Thirteen Lives, but this one has a sinister edge unusual for Howard. Based on a true story, Eden stars Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Bruehl, Ana de Armas, Toby Wallace and Felix Kammerer as the members of three parties who flee post-wwi civilization to start over and build paradise on the Galapagos Islands. It devolves into a Lord of the Flies battle to survive the elements, and each other. Eden‘s world premiere is set for 5:45 p.m. tonight at Roy Thomson Hall.

The crowds of film sellers and buyers are still rolling into Toronto from Venice and Telluride, but the puck dropped Thursday night on the acquisitions marketplace with the premiere of Nutcrackers.
David Gordon Green has taken a detour from genre to serve up a Ben Stiller-starrer that proved a crowdpleaser in two opening-night showings.
That kind of movie — with promising premises with stars and directors with proven track records — is all over the schedule. There is a lot to like in this 2024 TIFF acquisitions market. But I’ve just come from an L.A. visit and cannot recall as bleak a black cloud hangover from the twin strikes of last year. It will take time for the business to recover, and this caution could factor into the dealmaking. Also on the minds of distributors is how elusive box office has become. Comparable films to the ones on sale here...

The Toronto International Film Festival kicked off its 49th edition with the world premiere of “Nutcrackers,” a crowd-pleasing fish-out-of-water comedy from director David Gordon Green and Ben Stiller in his first film role in seven years.
Stiller’s big screen homecoming wasn’t the only major return to TIFF. Star power is back, baby! Last year’s festival was hobbled by labor strikes that left actors and screenwriters on the picket lines and unable to promote their films. So, it’s a huge relief to not only TIFF organizers, but also studios and agencies (who were tasked in 2023 with drumming up excitement for movies without many boldface names in attendance) that A-listers like Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong’o, Selena Gomez, Elton John, Ana de Armas, Dakota Johnson and Mark Hamill are scheduled to touch down in Toronto over the next 11 days.
It’s not just Hollywood that’s bringing energy to TIFF.

At this time last year, picketers were walking outside of studio gates, still two months away from resolving Hollywood’s dual strikes. Of the big festivals, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), with its focus on star-heavy independent projects, was hardest hit by the labor action, with empty red carpets turning much-hyped premieres into damp squibs. Heading into TIFF this year, Hollywood is contending with less uncertainty (M&a and cost-cutting aside) and release calendars have fewer holes as strike-halted productions have started to roll out again, all of which should be good news for dealmakers headed to TIFF.
“I think you’re going to see things moving relatively quickly, especially given the languid pace that has pervaded film festival markets since Covid,” says Kent Sanderson of Bleecker Street, who is bringing three titles to the fest while looking for new acquisitions. “If anything is going to slow the pace of film sales,...

When it was announced that Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby, and Ana de Armas would all be a part of director Ron Howard’s Eden, fans couldn’t help but be a little excited. After all the movie looks all set to be an intense one. It revolves around the story of a Galapagos island and the people who come to inhabit it. Eventually, all of them get embroiled in a conflict for supremacy on the island. While at first glance it does seem like a riveting project, there might be more to the movie than what meets the eye.
