Chicago – After acknowledging that the rewards of reality are infinitely preferable to the shallow pleasures of a nostalgic dreamworld in his Oscar-winning crowd-pleaser, “Midnight in Paris,” Woody Allen’s tirelessly neurotic psyche appears to be more calm and serene than ever before. Perhaps his compulsion to make one picture a year has finally brought him some sort of therapeutic catharsis.
His eagerly anticipated follow-up, “To Rome with Love,” is an entertaining trifle that functions as little more than an absurdist travelogue, but it’s also his most relaxed, causally playful offering in many a moon. Considering the unfathomable potential of its powerhouse cast, the script’s hit-or-miss trajectory is a considerable letdown. The film wasn’t quite worth the full price of admission in theaters, but as a Friday night rental, cinephiles could do a whole lot worse. As for die-hard Allen fans (such as myself), there is plenty here to savor.

When you see those traditional Woody Allen titles of a white Windsor font on a black surface, there’s a sense of affability, a comforting familiarity amongst the audience that, at the very least, the forthcoming picture is going to worth your while, as there are few cinematic events that provoke such genuine excitement and anticipation than the latest Allen flick.
Having delved into a selection of European cities such as London, Barcelona and Paris, Allen turns his attentions to the Italian capital city of Rome, where we focus on a host of characters, engulfed in narratives surrounding the themes of romance, betrayal and the celebrity culture of the contemporary world. Woody Allen's latest European adventure is a portmanteau farce with some hits among its many misses
He's been to London, Barcelona and Paris and now Woody Allen has made another of his luxury-tourist stopovers in a European capital, shot in a honeyed sunset-light and recycling picturesque cliches around half a century old. This time it's Rome, and the original title was to be Bop Decameron, an allusion to Boccaccio's medieval multi-narrative tale that set up this ensemble movie. Allen was, however, persuaded that it was too abstruse, and I suspect the hopelessly dated reference to bebop was probably a bit baffling as well. The alternative, Nero Fiddles, was also rejected, so To Rome With Love it is.
Allen is no stranger to Italy and Italians: in Play It Again, Sam (1972), his film critic Allan comes out of the portmanteau film Le Coppie, or Couples, by De Sica and others...

Following something as successful as Midnight in Paris — which became both a Best Picture nominee as well as the highest-grossing picture of Woody Allen’s career — was never going to be easy. Allen struck gold in that one, finding an ideal surrogate for himself in Owen Wilson and allowing everyone, for the time being, to repress the fact that his recent output has been so erratically scattershot. Unfortunately, his latest Eurotrip, To Rome with Love, brings those memories back in a hurry, with the narrative-vignette approach ultimately revealing a desert-dry uncertainty rather than a purposeful overriding agenda.
Let’s start with the strangest and, even if it doesn’t make good on its promise, most potentially illuminating of these threads. Woody Allen's To Rome with Love is great at moments, good in others and, at times, tedious. In all it's a testament to the lesson that less is more as he's loaded this thing with so many storylines, had the lesser of the bunch been excised he just might have had something to talk about as a solid follow-up to last year's hit and Best Picture nominee, Midnight in Paris.
As the film opens we're introduced to a series of characters beginning with an American tourist (Alison Pill) who falls in love with a Rome native (Flavio Parenti). The two spend a whirlwind summer together and decide to get married. Her parents (Allen and Judy Davis) fly in to meet him and his family and her father, an ex-music producer, takes an interest in his father's (Fabio Armiliato) singing voice.

Rome -- Woody Allen's newest movie "To Rome with Love" casts big names like Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Judy Davis and Allen himself. But there is one exceptional star: the Eternal City.
"This city is really special," says Hayley (Alison Pill) to her fiance Michelangelo (Flavio Parenti), as they stand on a terrace overlooking the Spanish Steps, one of Rome's famous attractions. "I could stand here all night, it's too beautiful."
Woody Allen's Rome is beautiful, clean and sunny, a city shining in pristine beauty with no hint of real-world problems like Italy's financial crisis. But while the movie offers an anachronistic and nostalgic postcard portrayal of Rome, Allen also goes beyond the city's best-known locations to capture the unconventional atmosphere of neighborhoods less familiar to tourists like Sant'Angelo, Garbatella and Rione Monti.

Continuing the tone set by last year's Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen's new film is relaxed, easy-to-digest, light entertainment—middle-brow fluff done right, in other words. Like a Bertrand Blier movie without the ambition or the mean smarts, it trades in narrative left turns, tricky structures, sustained Surrealist gags, caricature characters, and theatrical devices that have been transposed to filmmaking; it doesn't add up to much—some good laughs, a handful of basic observations about human behavior, and the same moral about being content with your place in the world that Allen's been preaching for the last 40 years—but there's no sense faulting a movie for slightness when it's slight by design.

Alessandra Mastronardi is beaming like a kid on Christmas morning, and can’t stop laughing. But then again, why not? The 26-year-old actress has a lot to be happy about, after all, having snagged a plum role in filmmaker Woody Allen’s latest movie, “To Rome With Love.” She’s presently in Los Angeles, accompanying the movie for its premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival. In it, she plays Milly, a small town girl who, during a trip to Rome, leaves her husband Antonio (Alessandro Tiberi) for a hair appointment, gets lost in the city, and ends up getting romanced by a famous movie star (Antonio Albanese). Roma, Ti Amo: Woody Allen Sketches Snippets of the Eternal City
Say what you will about Woody Allen, but he’s had an amazing decade with his Euro tour, wrapping it up in Italy with his latest effort, To Rome With Love. A film of four separate vignettes concerned with Americans, Italians, natives, and tourists and experiences they have shaped by the great city, it’s too bad that Allen’s latest feels like your travel day to get home—you just want to make it there and somehow pass the gulf of time that separates point A from point B.
Opening with a traffic cop informing us of both his bad English and the many different things that can be seen and stories that can be told in Rome, a loud car accident is heard off-screen (the irony of the traffic director’s sloppiness and Allen’s end product...

Cate Blanchett in Joe Wright’s Hanna In the last few weeks, Cate Blanchett’s name has been mentioned in connection to Woody Allen’s next film not to be shot in Copenhagen. According to Forbes.com, Allen has indeed made offers not only to Blanchett, but also to Sally Hawkins, best known for almost getting an Academy Award nomination for her Berlin Film Festival hit Happy-Go-Lucky. The Forbes article adds that "there’s no word at all" on Bradley Cooper. The Hit and Run / The Hangover star had been rumored as another possibility for Allen’s film. Still untitled (as usual), Allen’s next will be shot in San Francisco and New York City. Allen’s latest, To Rome with Love, took in $3.7 million in Italy this past weekend, topping the box-office chart in that country. It opens in the Us on June 22. Roberto Benigni, To Rome with Love According to English-language reports, Italian critics have given a mixed reception to Woody Allen's To Rome with Love (formerly known as Nero Fiddled and Bop Decameron, and currently known as A Roma con amore in Rome itself). They've reportedly complained that writer-director Allen presents a view of Rome and Italians that is both idealized and stereotyped. At the To Rome with Love press conference held earlier today, Allen provided quite a bit of idealization ("Rome is a city unlike any other in the world…"), while one of the film's stars, Roberto Benigni, provided a defense of the filmmaker's portrayals. As an example of how real-life Italians are just like Italians in American movies, Benigni claimed that during the shoot, an ambulance whizzing by came to an abrupt halt. Its occupants got out, asked to pose for pictures with Benigni, and then rushed out...

Alessandro Tiberi, Roberto Della Casa, Penélope Cruz, To Rome with Love Woody Allen, whose To Rome with Love had its world premiere in the Italian capital today, says his next movie will not be set in Copenhagen. "I don’t know where that came from," Allen told journalists at a press conference for To Rome with Love, "but I assure you: I have not spoken to anyone in Copenhagen, I don’t know anyone in Copenhagen, and I have no plans to make a film in Copenhagen." He added that his next project will be set in San Francisco and New York City. Regarding his recent films set in various European cities after decades working in New York, Allen explained that "the spirit of London or Barcelona or Paris or Rome is very similar to that of New York. There are cosmetic differences, of course, but the spirit is similar,...

Penélope Cruz, Alessandro Tiberi, Woody Allen's To Rome with Love The 2012 Cannes Film Festival buzz keeps getting stronger for a variety of movies. So far, the only confirmed screening is that of Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, which will open this year's festival on May 16. What else? Well, according to Premiere there are a number of strong possibilities — none directed by Lars von Trier, who doesn't have any new movie ready, anyways. Below are a few highly likely Cannes 2012 entries: Jacques Audiard's Un gout de rouille et d'os / Rust & Bone, which was supposed to open in October in France, but has had its debut pushed forward to May 17. The psychological drama stars Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts. David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis. As per Premiere, the film's seller at the last Berlin Film Festival presented an "unbelievable" Cosmopolis promo reel, and even announced date and time for the film's Cannes screening.

Woody Allen’s next film, heretofore known as ‘Nero Fiddled’, was officially re-titled yesterday and given a new name that should see it resonate better in its international territories, and so from here on out we’ll know it as ‘To Rome With Love’.
We now have the first eleven images to share with you, some images of the film itself and others including Allen on set, as well as the full cast line-up (which is excellent) and the full soundtrack details (which are just a little bit impeccable).
The romantic-comedy is made up of four vignettes, two of which revolving around American characters and two around Italian characters, with the main cast including the likes of Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Penélope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Roberto Benigni, Judy Davis, Greta Gerwig, and Alison Pill.

With a new geographically-specific title and a summer release just announced, Woody Allen's latest Euro-flavored venture, "To Rome With Love," is just around the corner. Looking to replicate the success of "Midnight In Paris," a career-best box office hit that won Allen his first writing Oscar since 1987 for "Hannah And Her Sisters," details of his latest film are being kept under wraps. Luckily, we now have a better look at what's to come as a host of photos from the project have been unveiled.
While there's no sign of young stars Greta Gerwig or Ellen Page amongst the pics, there's certainly no lack of star-power with our first glimpses at Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Alison Pill, Judy Davis and even Allen in his first acting role since 2006's "Scoop." The production of Woody Allen's »The Bop Decameron« started as planned on July 11 in Rome, Italy. Ellen arrived in the country of pizza, pasta and amore on July 18 and was initially spotted on set towards the end of the week. Most scenes were shot outside at highly frequented locations including: Rome's longest and most popular beach Ostia, the Roma Termini train station, the daily farmer's market of Campo de' Fiori, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum and the main shopping avenue Via del Corso. It was only a matter of time until the first paparazzi shots turned up on the Internet. I could easily add a hundred of them to the gallery, but I won't do it for the following reasons. It is and has always been the policy of this website to ignore and not repost such photos. Although filming outdoor scenes in Italy's capital is kind of a...

Woody Allen is faring pretty well these days after a good showing from Midnight in Paris. His next film was rumored to be starring some young and hip faces in that of Jesse Eisenberg and Ellen Page. Coming off Midnight in Paris, his biggest financial success in decades, Woody Allen is ready to shoot his 2012 film. It's called The Bop Decameron and he's just finalized the very impressive cast, many of which we were already aware of [1]. The most exciting news is the confirmation [2] that Allen himself will return to the screen after a few films off (his last one was 2006's Scoop). He'll star along with Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page. It'll start filming in Rome next month. No word on the plot, as Allen likes to keep those under wraps, but we try and decipher the title and announce more cast members after the jump. Here's the press release: Woody Allen announced today the full cast for “The Bop Decameron,” his latest film in pre-production. While I have a great appreciation and respect for Woody Allen‘s earlier work, I had stopped paying attention to what he was crafting next after a string of disappointments and half-baked projects. That’s just changed for me, however, as I was lucky enough to see Midnight in Paris on Saturday. Thanks to this viewing, I am now firmly back on his side. If you haven’t checked it out yet, please do so — it’s easily one of his best movies in several years (even if that doesn’t sound like much).
Due to this re-energized love for the man’s work, his next film – the Rome-set The Bob Decameron - has shown up on my radar. Once referred to as The Wrong Picture, this is his first movie to be set in Rome; considering his recent obsession with European cities, it’s kind of surprising it took...

With "Midnight In Paris" getting some of the best reviews Allen has received in years, and hitting the box office with a force the director's works haven't seen in decades, it seems like the helmer is on a new peak with his career. As per usual, he's already at work on his next film, continuing his pace of one movie per year, and today the full cast has been announced with a couple of exciting additions. Greta Gerwig and Alison Pill, along with Antonio Albanese, Fabio Armiliata, Alessandra Mastronardi, Ornella Muti, Flavio Parenti and Alessandro Tiberi have all come on…...

In a press release I just received, the full cast of Woody Allen's upcoming Rome-set feature The Bop Decameron has been revealed. Previously we already learned the cast would include Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Riccardo Scamarcio and would even have a part for Allen himself.
Today we learn the above names have been joined by Judy Davis, Greta Gerwig, Alison Pill, Antonio Albanese, Fabio Armiliata, Alessandra Mastronardi, Ornella Muti, Flavio Parenti and Alessandro Tiberi.
It's exciting to see Gerwig, who has an upcoming role in Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress, as a member of the cast, she seems like an actress perfectly suited for Allen's films along with the likes of Page and Pill. Of course, Eisenberg is also a bit of a no-brainer and it will be fun to see what kind of dialogue Baldwin will be given the opportunity to chew through.
