The Similars (Los Parecidos)

Isaac Ezban
Mexico, 2015
Mexico’s Isaac Ezban is two for two with his follow-up to last year’s gripping psychological thriller The Incident. Combining equal parts 50’s sci-fi b-movies and lost Twilight Zone episodes, The Similars is an entertaining, tongue-in-cheek black comedy with just the right amount of gore. Right from the start writer/director Ezban revels in the trappings of 60s aesthetics, opening with a Saul Bass-style credit sequence, a Bernard Herrmann-inspired score, a soundtrack that includes classic surf music and a voiceover that brings to mind The Outer Limits.
The Similars begins with a very simple set up as an omniscient narrator fills us in on how a bunch of strangers came together (by chance or fate) to the desolate bus station which serves as the only location in the lean 89 minute feature. The year is 1968 and a heavy rain...

2010’s Mexican cannibal horror film, We Are What We Are, has been in the running for an American English-language remake after Memento picked up the rights to develop the project earlier this year.
Eager to get underway, after the first film found substantial success and critical acclaim internationally (not often a cannibal horror film does that), the rising star Riley Keough (the upcoming Jack & Diane and Magic Mike) has been set as one of the leading sisters, as well as Julia Garner (Martha Marcy May Marlene) opposite.
Here’s the synopsis for writer-director Jorge Michel Grau’s original film, Somos lo que hay:
Three teenagers are wary about holding up a rather disturbing family tradition in writer and director Jorge Michel Grau’s unusual blend of horror, suspense and family drama, We Are What We Are (Somos Lo Que Hay). Alfredo (Francisco Barreiro), Julian (Alan Chavez) and Sabina (Paulina Gaitan...

Rating (out of five): ***
Mexican director Jorge Michel Grau's undeniably creepy if tonally uneven We Are What We Are (Somos los que hay) is on the one hand a melancholy dysfunctional family tale, and on the other hand, well... they'd like to eat it.
After their father perishes in a heap on a city sidewalk, the two sons, Alfredo (Francisco Barreiro) and Julian (Alan Chávez*), help their haggard mother (Carmen Beato) with the family finances as well as the family appetite, despite not being especially equipped for either role. The most important thing? Continuing the family "ritual" -- the unpleasant task the patriarch done for them for years. Meanwhile, two curious cops, after seeing the coroner find a finger in the man's stomach, decide to investigate further -- at their own risk.

Cannibalism is a topic that, Hannibal Lecter aside, has mostly been confined to horror films and so-called video nasties. Mexican director Jorge Michel Grau approaches the subject from a different angle for his debut feature giving it a more art house treatment for We Are What We Are (‘Somos lo que hay’ in its native language) released on Blu-ray and DVD this week.
Three teenagers Alfredo (Francisco Barreiro), Julian (Alan Chavez) and Sabina (Paulina Gaitan) live with their father (Humberto Yanez) and mother (Carmen Beato) in a run-down section of Mexico City. When their father dies unexpectedly during a visit to a shopping mall, it throws the family into chaos, but not just for the usual reasons. The family has an unusual custom in which their father would capture a stranger and bring them home, after which the family would kill the victim in an elaborate ritual and then eat the flesh.

This is the Pure Movies review of We Are What We Are, directed by Jorge Michel Grau and starring Adrián Aguirre, Miriam Balderas, Francisco Barreiro, Carmen Beato, Juan Carlos Colombo and Paulina Gaitan. Written by Gabriella Apicella. With an opening that evokes a post-apocalyptic atmosphere, We Are What We Are begins with a suitably eerie tone. A dishevelled middle-aged man slowly dies in the smart shopping area of a Mexico city, his body speedily cleaned away and mopped up before it is even cold. When the news reaches his reclusive family, it becomes apparent that his death is about to tear their lives apart, as we learn how he provided their means of survival.

The task falls to the eldest son, Alfredo, a teenage misfit who seems far from ready to accept the challenge… But without human meat the family will die.

Writer-director Jorge Michel Grau faces a steep challenge with We Are What We Are. As the maker of an existential drama centered on a morose family of Mexican cannibals, Grau must find some way to connect his audience to the material, to unearth the humanity behind a gruesome, depressing subject. Let the Right One In and Let Me In, its American remake, established a template for this sort of enterprise, mixing the pangs of young love and the aching loneliness of the vampire’s everyday existence with the characteristic gore of a genre flick. Yet, cannibals are less sympathetic than vampires, the pop culture ghouls-of-the-moment, whose survival depends on human blood. There’s something far less romantic about humans who devour other humans just because they’ve developed a taste for them instead of, oh, McDonald’s. Filmmakers have traditionally understood this: Aside from one Hannibal Lecter, it’d be hard to finger a movie cannibal of...

Following the sudden death of their patriarch/caretaker, the temperamental Patricia (Carmen Beato) and her three teenage children must fend for themselves. Father prepared the rituals and acquired the meat for this family of cannibals. Aided by his impetuous younger brother Julián (Alan Chávez) and his pragmatic sister Sabina (Paulina Gaitán), the eldest son, Alfredo (Francisco Barreiro), is now charged with this momentous task, a responsibility he seems ill suited for. Vampires are so last season, so bring on the cannibals! Why get a shake when you can have a whole Happy Meal? The cannibal lifestyle is by no means glamourised here, but if there is a revival, this could be its Let The Right One In - a downbeat, realist horror in which a father's death forces his flesh-eating family to fend for themselves. We're in for nasty gore and a grimy wallow in Mexico's underclass, but despite a frustrating lack of detail, the setting is ripe for socio-political metaphors and inappropriate comedy.

Wandering around like a zombie attempting to touch dummy breasts through a shop's window, the breadwinner of a family of cannibals starts coughing up vile black liquid. Dying of a heart attack outside a swanky shopping centre, his body is promptly dragged away and the mess below cleaned up. His family are left to fend for themselves which isn't easy when they are evicted from their market stall pitch where they mend watches and have never had to hunt for their meals.
After the initial wave of shock and despair, the remaining family deliberate over what must be done, all agreeing that food must be found for the next day. Their father was addicted to whores, but their mother refuses to eat prostitutes - even to the point of making a risky return of a prostitute's corpse as a warning to the others to leave her family alone, rather than take a bite.

Family dramas usually don't involve ritual murder and the consuming of human flesh. But that's not the only thing that makes We Are What We Are (Somos lo que hay) stand out in writer-director Jorge Michel Grau's first feature, and not just because it won two awards at Fantastic Fest this year (Best Film and Best Screenplay-amd Next Wave).
Grau's merciless, gritty thriller centers on a destitute family reeling from the sudden loss of their patriarch. But unlike most families, he's not the breadwinner so much as their only procurer of victims for their bloody rituals. They don't especially mourn for him but have to find his successor and keep to their rituals. Alfredo (Francisco Barreiro) assumes it's his responsibility to be the man of the house, but he's ill equipped, despite the urgings of his sister Sabina (Paulina Gaitan), who clearly favors Alfredo over her other, impetuous brother...

We Are What We Are is a film that tries to humanise seemingly ordinary people who do monstrous things, but it fails to do a good job of this for two main reasons; all of its subjects are neither likeable nor interesting with or without their monstrousness.
Jorge Michel Grau's film does some fantastic things with cinematography and audio to root us in the grimy underbelly of urban Mexico, but it gives us little to no reason to be emotionally invested in what happens to the people we meet there. Furthermore it goes horribly off the rails with some shockingly clumsy attempts at allegory and subtext that could well leave many viewers checking their watches long before the climax.
This is a crying shame, because it's a compelling, fairly original premise. A man keels over and dies in a shopping mall, his passing so unremarkable the cleaners are scrubbing...

Horror films are branching out to Mexican markets as Somos Lo Que Hay or We Are What We Are gets picked up by IFC Films for a 2010 Video-on-demand release. The story follows a cannibalistic family whose father dies leaving the remaining to starve. Gruesome, but sure to be a little tasty, the film's synopsis and further details are below.
The synopsis for We Are What We Are:
"A middle-aged man dies in the street, leaving his widow and three children destitute. The devastated family is confronted not only with his loss but with a terrible challenge - how to survive. For they are cannibals. They have always existed on a diet of human flesh consumed in bloody ritual ceremonies... and the victims have always been provided by the father. Now that he is gone, who will hunt? Who will lead them? How will they slake their horrific hunger? The task falls to the eldest son,...

My thinking is that there is a nice future ahead for this edgy, auteur, little Mexican horror flick and plenty in store for the pic's helmer in Jorge Michel Grau. A film that borrows more from the family drama than the actual freight factors (there are some gore scenes, but it is almost an after-thought). - My thinking is that there is a nice future ahead for this edgy, auteur, little Mexican horror flick and plenty in store for the pic's helmer in Jorge Michel Grau. A film that borrows more from the family drama than the actual freight factors (there are some gore scenes, but it is almost an after-thought). I dropped by briefly for the press conference for We Are What We Are (Somos lo que hay) - which had actors Francisco Barreiro, Carmen Beato and Paulina Gaitan (from Sin Nombre fame) along with producer Nicolás Celis (a co-producer on Agua fria de mar). What I distinctly liked about the film is the family dynamic aspect - who is the boss when dad ain't coming home anymore and I like the symbolic mention of how corrupt Grau's native country is. A must see on the festival circuit.

'Aro' Mexico's Oscar entry
MEXICO CITY -- Mexico selected Aro Tolbukhin (En la Mente del Asesino) as its official contender to vie for a foreign-language Oscar nomination. The Mexico/Spain co-production, directed and written by Agusti Villaronga, Lydia Zimmerman and Isaac P. Racine, re-creates an allegedly true story of a Hungarian man living in Guatemala who burned seven nurses alive. The film uses a mix of documentary and fiction footage. In April, Aro Tolbukhin won seven of Mexico's prestigious Ariel awards, including best actor for Daniel Gimenez Cacho and best actress for Carmen Beato.

'Crimen' steals nine Ariels on Tuesday
MEXICO CITY -- All sins were forgiven Tuesday evening at the 45th annual Ariel Awards ceremony, where the controversial boxoffice hit El Crimen del Padre Amaro grabbed nine statuettes, including best picture, director and adapted screenplay. Pseudo-documentary Aro Tolbukhin: En la mente del asesino (Aro Tolbukhin in the Mind of a Killer) offered the only real competition for El Crimen at the capital's Palace of Fine Arts, nabbing seven awards, among them best actor (Daniel Gimenez Cacho) and actress (Carmen Beato). The Mexican Cinematographic Academy of Arts and Sciences, which comprises 123 voting members, selected this year's winners. In her opening speech, Academy President Diana Bracho used the opportunity to speak about the local industry's ongoing production crisis and to criticize the war in Iraq, setting the tone of antiwar sentiment.
