Knight of the Bath at the Coronation of King Charles II 1661; on his death the Barony of Clinton fell into abeyance between the descendants of his three aunts:  Lady Catharine Booth, Lady Delamere;  Lady Arabella Rolle;  and Lady Margaret Boscawen.  On 16 Mar 1721 the abeyance was terminated in favour of his cousin, Hugh [Fortescue], 14th Baron Clinton.

The Earldom of Lincoln was held by the Dukes of Newcastle-under-Lyne from 17 Nov 1768 until 25 Dec 1988 when Edward Charles [Pelham-Clinton], 10th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne and 17th Earl of Lincoln died unmarried.  On his death the Dukedom of Newcastle-under-Lyne became extinct and he was succeeded in the Earldom of Lincoln by his kinsman,
