Mercedes F1 special livery to celebrate Petronas’ 50th anniversary; Hamilton, Russell to visit Malaysia

Us Malaysians may still be no closer to a return of the Malaysia Grand Prix, but this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix is set to get a dose of local flavour. That’s because the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team will run a special livery to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its title sponsor Petronas.

The W15 E Performance race car, which has won three races in a topsy-turvy 2024 season, will swap Stuttgart’s iconic silver for the national oil and gas company’s emerald green, all along the nose and engine cover. The hue is extended to the side pods where the Petronas script sits, while special 50th anniversary logos will also adorn the car.

Petronas has been inexorably linked to Mercedes since the latter’s return to the sport as a full works entry in 2010. The local firm’s fuel and lubricants have powered the team to all seven drivers’ championships and a record-breaking eight constructors’ titles – secured over a period of hybrid-era dominance from 2014 to 2021 – so it’s no surprise the team is paying such a big tribute.

Singapore being so close to home is also giving the team an opportunity to visit Malaysia. Drivers Lewis Hamilton (his last appearance in Petronas colours before joining Ferrari) and George Russell, as well as team principal Toto Wolff, will be making the trek to our shores over the next week as part of the golden jubilee celebrations.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship for many more years to come, and with exciting challenges ahead such as the introduction of sustainable fuels in 2026,” said Wolff. “This livery is therefore not only a celebration of their 50th anniversary, but a reflection of Petronas’ importance in our team’s story and honours our journey together.”

Hamilton added: “Since I joined the team in 2013, Petronas have been there every step of the way. They’ve played such a crucial role in the success that we’ve enjoyed and have helped power me to six drivers’ world championships. It’s a privilege therefore to celebrate this milestone, and our journey together, at such an important race.

“The livery looks incredible. I can’t wait to see it on the car in the garage tomorrow and then to get behind the wheel on Friday.”

Russell said: “As title and technical partner, Petronas is integral to everything we do on track. It is great to recognise the importance of our relationship at the race closest to its home. I am also looking forward to going to Malaysia next week to continue the celebrations. It is always great to visit the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and meet the many people who have contributed to the success of the company over the past 50 years and will continue to do so into the next 50.”

When will they come to Malaysia to celebrate the anniversary? And is there any public event so that the fans could join together to see the team?

Nothing to celebrate when Malaysia is in such a sorry state thanks to UBAH. Better to save money and leave the celebration when we truly have joy to celebrate.

Petronas should be spelled as PETRONAS. They are not only title sponsors but also technical partner. Please get it right.

Technical partner or not, we refrain from using all caps for brand names as part of our house style. It's the same reason why we use "Proton" instead of "PROTON". The only exception to the rule is MINI, as a means to differentiate the BMW-developed models from the Alec Issigonis-designed original.
